CVT, VCM and turbo: what drives your Honda
Honda in the UAE runs four petrol engine families and a hybrid, with a CVT in most cars and stepped automatics in the V6 models. The pairing tells us where to look first.
CVTA steel belt between two pulleys, no fixed gears. Smooth and frugal, but judder or whine needs a fluid and software check first.
VCMThe V6 shuts off two or three cylinders at cruise to save fuel. That can foul plugs and wear engine mounts over time.

Buying a used Honda? Six checks before you pay
With 347 used Hondas listed in Dubai, a ten year old Accord and a two year old CR-V need very different checks. These six catch the costly faults, and you get a written report.
- CVT or automatic from cold. We pull away, creep and reverse from cold to catch CVT judder, slipping or a harsh 9 speed engagement.
- Oil and misfire history. On the 1.5 turbo we smell the oil for fuel; on a V6 we read misfire history and check plugs.
- AC under load. We measure vent temperature at idle and on the road, and look for condenser damage or oily leak traces.
- Recalls and service record. We ask Al-Futtaim Honda to check the VIN for open recalls and match service stamps to the listing claims.
- Mounts and steering. We watch the engine rock at idle and in gear, and listen for pump whine on older V6 models.
- Underbody and tyres. On the lift we check bushes, brakes, driveshaft boots and tyre wear for kerb damage, leaks or bent arms.

Honda started with motorised bicycles and still builds its own engines and many of its own gearboxes. That engineering habit explains why so many old Accords and Civics still run in Dubai.

What does a flashing engine light mean on a Honda V6?
A flashing engine light means a severe misfire, and on Honda V6 models it is often linked to VCM fouling a spark plug. Stop driving, because unburnt fuel can overheat the catalyst. We read the codes, inspect plugs and check compression and engine mounts.
Why is my Honda AC blowing warm air?
