Running a Patrol V8

A year with a Patrol, in AED

The Y62 Patrol is one of the best loved SUVs in the UAE, but a 5.6 V8 is not cheap to run. Knowing the yearly numbers helps you budget and spot a quote that is too high.

Where we help: independent servicing at the lower end of the range, honest tyre advice, and early fixes that stop small faults becoming big bills.

Where you save most: catching gearbox and cooling problems early, and choosing the right parts option for your budget.

The Nissan CVT gearbox, explained

Most smaller Nissans use a CVT, a gearbox without fixed gears that Nissan calls Xtronic, mostly built by its gearbox supplier Jatco. It is smooth and economical, but it does not like old fluid, heat or neglect. Here is what each sign means.

Revs rise, car is slow
The belt inside is slipping. Often old fluid at first, but it gets worse if ignored.
Whine or drone
Wear on bearings or the pulleys. We road test and scan before suggesting a rebuild.
Shudder pulling away
Judder from the torque converter or worn fluid. A fluid change with the correct Nissan fluid often helps.
Limp mode in summer
The CVT is overheating and protecting itself. Fluid, cooler and driving style are checked.

The five zone Patrol desert check

Dune driving is what Patrols are built for, but it leaves marks. Before you buy, or after a hard weekend, we work through the car in this order.

1

Underbody

Deep scrapes on skid plates and crossmembers, sand packed in the frame rails, or suspiciously fresh underbody coating.

2

Suspension and steering

Uneven tyre wear, worn bushes, and badly fitted lift kits that strain steering parts and CV joints.

3

Engine

Coolant condition, an air filter full of sand, and sand that has got past the filter seal.

4

Interior

Sand in seat rails and carpet edges, uneven pedal wear, and warning lights that clear after a cold start.

5

Records

A full scan and a check that service history matches the odometer and the wear on the car.

Sunny, Kicks, Sentra, Tiida, Micra

Everyday Nissans, sensible prices

Small Nissans are cheap to run when they are serviced on time. Most big bills start as small, skipped jobs.

Oil and filters

On time, every time. City traffic and heat age oil faster than the kilometres suggest.

CVT fluid

The single best way to protect the gearbox on these models. We use the correct Nissan fluid.

AC and cooling

Small engines work hard to run the AC in summer. We check gas, condenser and fan.

Brakes and tyres

Taxi style stop start driving wears pads quickly. We measure, then quote only what is needed.

Your choice, clearly priced

Three parts options, one honest quote

Nissan parts are easy to find in Dubai at very different prices. We show you the options side by side, so you choose with the facts.

Option 3

Quality aftermarket

Trusted brands for older cars and budget repairs. We only offer brands we are happy to fit, and tell you where we would not use them.

Before you book

Nissan repair questions answered

Patrol, CVT, desert driving, parts and costs.

Ask on WhatsApp
How much does a Nissan service cost in Dubai?

A Nissan major service in Dubai starts from about AED 349 as a guide for smaller models, based on a published Dubai online package price. A V8 Patrol major service at an independent workshop is about AED 1,200 to 2,500. Send your model and mileage for an exact quote.

How much does it cost to run a Patrol in Dubai?

A V8 Patrol in Dubai costs roughly AED 3,000 to 6,000 a year for comprehensive insurance, AED 600 to 900 a month for fuel, AED 500 to 900 per tyre and AED 1,200 to 2,500 for an independent major service, as a guide from a UAE buyer's guide.

What are common problems on the Y62 Patrol?

Early 2010 to 2014 cars can have gearbox valve body problems, felt as harsh shifts, delayed engagement or a shudder between second and third. A UAE guide puts the repair at AED 5,000 to 12,000.

What should I check on a Patrol Safari?

On high mileage Y61 4.8 engines, brown or milky coolant can be a sign of head gasket trouble. We also check the underbody, suspension and cooling after years of desert use.

Why is my Nissan CVT slipping or whining?

Slipping, whining or a shudder usually point to worn fluid or internal wear. We scan and road test, then often start with a fluid change using the correct Nissan CVT fluid before any rebuild.

Which Nissan model years have the most CVT problems?

The model years most often cited for CVT problems are the 2012 to 2017 Sentra, 2013 to 2016 Altima, 2013 to 2014 Pathfinder and 2015 Murano. These come from owner reports, warranty extensions and campaigns, so ask the UAE dealer to check your VIN for any open recall.

How often should I change Nissan CVT fluid?

Change Nissan CVT fluid about every 50,000 to 95,000 km (30,000 to 60,000 miles) as a guide, and sooner with heavy use or heat. Dubai summers count as heavy use, so we lean towards the shorter end.

Where can I get my Nissan repaired in Dubai outside the dealer?

Mechanics in Al Quoz is an independent Nissan workshop for the Patrol, Patrol Safari, X-Trail, Sunny, Kicks, Altima and Pathfinder, covering servicing, CVT and gearbox faults, cooling and desert checks. You get a free inspection and a written quote with parts options first. Warranty and recall work stays with Arabian Automobiles, the official Nissan dealer in Dubai.

Do you use genuine Nissan parts?

We offer genuine Nissan, original equipment brand and quality aftermarket parts, priced side by side. You choose, and we tell you where we would only use genuine.

Do you work on the GT-R and 370Z?

Yes. We service and repair Nissan sports cars, including brakes, suspension, cooling and gearbox diagnosis. Send the model and mileage for a quote.

Do you service the Urvan and Navara?

Yes. We service vans and pickups, including fleet vehicles, with brakes, suspension, cooling and gearbox work.

Can you inspect a used Nissan before I buy it?

Yes. For a Patrol we run the five zone desert check, and for any Nissan we check the gearbox, engine, cooling and history, then send a written report with photos.
