Carbon on the valves, the slow thief of power
Skyactiv petrol engines spray fuel straight into the cylinders. That is efficient, but it means no fuel washes over the intake valves, so carbon slowly builds up on them over the years.
The car does not break down. It just gets lazier: a rough idle, hesitation and higher fuel use, then misfire codes. In Dubai's short, slow trips it can build faster.

Brakes that drag and a handbrake that sticks
Two brake problems come up often on the CX-5. Neither is dramatic at first, but both wear parts quickly if they are left alone.
Sticking calipers
A caliper that does not release fully wears the pads unevenly and overheats the disc, sometimes long before you expect a brake job. You may smell hot brakes or feel the car pull.
Electronic parking brake
The actuator or its connector can fail, so the brake does not fully release, or holds on one side. A warning appears on the dash.

A shudder or a jerk? It depends which Mazda
Most Mazdas use a six speed automatic with a torque converter. The new CX-60 and CX-90 use an eight speed automatic with a clutch instead. They behave differently, and so do their faults.
Six speed automatic

When the screen goes black, or the car brakes by itself
Modern Mazdas run on software as much as hardware. Some faults look frightening but are a module or a calibration, and some newer models have software recalls you should know about.

Why does my Mazda idle rough and feel slow?
On Skyactiv petrol engines, carbon slowly builds up on the intake valves because the fuel is injected straight into the cylinders. It causes a rough idle, hesitation, higher fuel use and in time misfire codes.
Why are my CX-5 brake pads wearing unevenly?
A sticking caliper that does not fully release is a known CX-5 issue. It wears pads unevenly and overheats the disc. We check the calipers before fitting new pads.
Why does my Mazda shudder at steady speed?
On Mazdas with the six speed automatic, a shudder at light, steady throttle usually comes from the torque converter lock-up. A road test at that speed and a scan confirm it.
Why does my Mazda CX-60 gearbox feel jerky?
Owners found the CX-60's eight speed gearbox rough at low speed, and Mazda released a software update to smooth it. Check the update is done before anything else.
