The heart of most McLarens

One McLaren hydraulic system, four big jobs

On the 12C and 650S, built around the MonoCell carbon tub and the 3.8 litre M838T twin turbo V8, a single hydraulic system shifts the gearbox, lifts the nose, runs the active suspension and moves the airbrake. It is fed by accumulators with a nitrogen charge that slowly bleeds down with age.

When that charge drops, the pump works harder and the car starts to complain in odd ways. On a 720S the first sign can be as subtle as the ride feeling slightly different over bumps. By then the accumulators are well into their failure window, so a pressure test is the only honest way to know.

Slow nose lift

The front takes longer to rise, or drops overnight.

Pump running often

You hear it prime repeatedly, even parked.

Gearbox warnings

Shift faults or a car that will not select gear.

Ride feels different

Damping hesitates over rough roads on 720S cars.

Accumulator

Nitrogen charged pressure store

Loses charge with age and heat. Tested, not guessed.

Job 1

Gearbox shifts

The dual clutch gearbox uses hydraulic pressure to engage.

Job 2

Nose lifter

Raises the front for ramps, speed bumps and car parks.

Job 3

Active suspension

Interlinked dampers replace normal anti roll bars.

Job 4

Airbrake

The rear wing on cars that have one, like the 650S.

How the system works from Foreign Automotive on the 12C and on the 720S. The GT uses conventional adaptive suspension instead.

McLaren SSG gearbox: pink drip or a hesitant shift?

A slow drip of pink coolant from the bottom of a 650S gearbox usually comes from the weep hole. It is the car telling you the input shaft seal at the clutch and coolant interface is starting to fail.

Early 12C cars were also known for gear selector faults and hesitation from cold. Most of this can be confirmed with a scan and a careful look before anyone talks about a new gearbox.

Weep hole check

We find out if the drip is coolant, gearbox oil or clutch fluid.

Clutch data

Wear and adaption values read with a full scan.

Cooler lines

A Dubai problem

Leaving your McLaren for the summer?

Many Dubai owners travel in July and August and leave the car parked for weeks. Sitting is one of the worst things for a McLaren. The battery drains, the hydraulic system loses pressure and seals dry out in the heat.

Battery on a maintainer

A 12C or 650S can drain its battery in two to three weeks with everything switched off. Fit a proper maintainer, not a basic charger.

Shade and cool air

Park out of the sun. Heat soak ages rubber seals, the battery and the composite panels.

Wake up gently

After weeks parked, let the hydraulic pump prime fully before driving, and watch for new warnings.

Check before the first drive

A quick health check on return catches low pressure, flat batteries and leaks before they cause damage.

Doors, cooling and electrics

The everyday McLaren faults owners ask about

Not every McLaren problem is a big one. These are the jobs that come up most, and most of them are cheaper when fixed early.

720S and 570S

Dihedral doors

Gas struts and hinges wear, and a heavy 720S door can damage panels if it drops. We replace struts before the door falls, not after.

All models

AC and cooling

Front condensers take stone chips, and the 720S runs its AC compressor almost all the time. Quick connect coolant fittings also harden and crack with age.

All models

Battery and electronics

A weak battery causes a storm of warnings, especially on the 720S. We test the battery first, then scan every module, not just the engine.

Artura owners

A hybrid McLaren, split the work smartly

The Artura is now the most listed McLaren in Dubai. It pairs a 3.0 litre M630 twin turbo V6 with an electric motor and an eight speed dual clutch gearbox on the MCLA carbon platform. Its high voltage system needs HV certified technicians and dealer software, so that work belongs with the dealer. Everything around it does not.

That split keeps your warranty clean and your running costs sensible. Tell us what you need and we will say honestly which side it falls on.

An honest comparison

McLaren dealer or independent workshop?

McLaren Dubai is run by Performance Tuning, part of the Khalifa Juma Al Nabooda Group, which took over from Al Habtoor Motors in 2022. Abu Dhabi Motors runs McLaren Abu Dhabi. Some work belongs there. The rest is your choice.

Under warranty

Use the dealer

Warranty claims and recalls go to the official dealer. Many used McLarens in Dubai are sold with dealer warranty and service contracts, so check yours first.

The free inspection

What we check when your McLaren comes in

A McLaren inspection is not a quick code read. It follows the same order every time, so nothing is missed, and you get photos and a written quote on WhatsApp.

Step 1

Cold start watch

How the hydraulic pump primes from cold tells us a lot about the accumulators.

Step 2

Full module scan

Every module read, not just the engine, with faults saved before anything is cleared.

Step 3

Hydraulic pressure test

The honest way to judge accumulator health before quoting suspension work.

Step 4

Gearbox and leaks

Weep hole, cooler lines and coolant fittings checked on the lift.

Step 5

Doors and underside

Door struts, hinges, splitter and floor checked for scrapes and wear.

Step 6

Road test

Shifts, damping, nose lift and noises checked on the road, then explained.

Buying a used McLaren?

The inspection that protects your money

A used 12C or 650S in Dubai can cost less than a new hot hatch. A hidden hydraulic or gearbox fault can cost a big share of that again, so the inspection matters more here than on almost any other car.

Hydraulics

Pressure test and cold start pump behaviour.

Gearbox

Weep hole, clutch data and a road test.

Doors and body

Struts, panel edges and paint bubbling.

Before you book

McLaren repair questions answered

Hydraulics, gearboxes, doors, summer storage, Artura and costs.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is the most common McLaren problem?

Hydraulic accumulator pressure loss. On many McLarens one hydraulic system runs the gearbox, nose lifter, active suspension and airbrake, fed by accumulators whose nitrogen charge bleeds down with age. A pressure test confirms it before any parts are quoted.

What are the signs of a failing McLaren accumulator?

A nose lift that is slow to rise, a hydraulic pump that primes often even when parked, gearbox or suspension warnings, and on the 720S a ride that feels slightly different over bumps.

Why is my McLaren dripping pink fluid under the gearbox?

On the 650S, a slow pink coolant drip from the bottom of the gearbox usually comes from the weep hole, a sign the input shaft seal is starting to fail. Have it checked quickly rather than topping up and driving.

Does the McLaren GT have the same hydraulic suspension?

No. The GT uses conventional adaptive suspension instead of McLaren's interlinked hydraulic system, so it avoids most of the accumulator issues seen on the 12C, 650S and 720S.

How should I store my McLaren over the Dubai summer?

Keep the battery on a proper maintainer, park in the shade, let the hydraulic pump prime fully before the first drive, and book a quick check on your return. A 12C or 650S can drain its battery in two to three weeks.

Why do McLaren doors stop staying open?

The gas struts and hinges on the dihedral doors wear over time, especially on the heavier 720S door. Replacing the struts early avoids panel damage if a door drops.

Can you service my McLaren Artura?

Yes, for tyres, alignment, brakes, AC, the 12V battery and body work. High voltage battery, e-motor and HV software work goes to the dealer, which has HV certified technicians.

How much does McLaren suspension repair cost?

It is quoted after a pressure test. A full hydraulic suspension unit on a 12C or 650S is one of the most expensive McLaren repairs, but often the accumulators alone are the fix, which is why we pressure test first.

Who is the McLaren dealer in Dubai?

The official McLaren dealer in Dubai is McLaren Dubai, run by Performance Tuning, part of the Khalifa Juma Al Nabooda Group, since 2022. Abu Dhabi Motors runs McLaren Abu Dhabi. Warranty and recall work goes to the dealer.

Can you inspect a used McLaren before I buy it?

Yes. We watch the cold start, pressure test the hydraulics, check the gearbox weep hole and clutch data, doors and underside, read every module and review the history, then send a report with photos.

Where can I get my McLaren repaired in Dubai outside the dealer?

Mechanics in Al Quoz is an independent McLaren workshop for servicing, hydraulic accumulator tests, SSG gearbox leaks, door struts, AC and pre-purchase inspections on the 12C through to the 750S and GT. You get a free inspection and a written quote first. Warranty, recall and high voltage work stays with McLaren Dubai, the official dealer.

Which engine and gearbox does my McLaren use?

The 12C, 650S, 675LT and Sports Series cars use versions of the 3.8 litre M838T twin turbo V8, while the 720S, 765LT, 750S and GT use versions of the 4.0 litre M840T. The Artura uses the 3.0 litre M630 twin turbo V6 hybrid. The V8 cars use a seven speed SSG dual clutch gearbox, the Artura an eight speed dual clutch.
