Which engine and gearbox does your Hyundai have?

The same Tucson can have three different engines and three different gearboxes. Pick your model and year to see the likely pairing, and the Theta II, DCT or recall checks that apply.

Send your Hyundai model, year and a photo of the VIN plate on WhatsApp. We reply with the engine and gearbox it has, the checks that apply and a written quote.

Engines and gearboxes from Wikipedia (Hyundai Tucson), Wikipedia (Hyundai Santa Fe), Wikipedia (Hyundai Elantra), Wikipedia (Hyundai Palisade), ZigWheels UAE Hyundai line up and dubizzle used Hyundai SUVs guide. Checks from Theta II lifetime warranty report (October 2019), park outside recall alert (September 2023), Rick's Free Auto Repair Advice (bulletin 14-ST-002-1), recall notice 16V-628 (August 2016) and the Hyundai owner's manual, DCT warning messages, checked 14 October 2026. What we repair

What we repair and service on your Hyundai

Twelve jobs cover almost every Hyundai that reaches our Al Quoz workshop. Each one starts with a free inspection and a written quote, and each links to its own Hyundai page.

  1. Hyundai oil change and service

Serviced to the Hyundai schedule with the right grade oil and filters, a code scan and an itemised invoice for your records.

  2. Engine repair and Theta II checks

Knock, oil use or misfires on the Theta II, Nu, Gamma or Smartstream. We test oil pressure, compression and codes before quoting.

  3. Automatic gearbox repair

Harsh or late shifts on the 6 and 8 speed automatics. We check fluid condition, codes and software before any gearbox work.

  4. DCT and IVT repair

Judder or hesitation on the 7 speed DCT, or whine on the IVT. Clutch learning, software and fluid checks come first.

  5. AC repair and regas

Warm air in traffic. We leak test the system, check the condenser fan and compressor, then regas or repair with a written price.

  6. Brake repair

Squeal, judder or a soft pedal. We measure pads and discs and quote genuine and aftermarket parts side by side.

  7. Suspension repair

Knocks over speed bumps or uneven tyre wear. We inspect links, bushes and shocks on the lift before quoting.

  8. Steering repair

A clunk through the wheel on older Elantra, Sonata and Santa Fe is often the steering coupler. We confirm it first.

  9. Battery and charging

Slow cranking after summer heat. We load test the battery and alternator, then fit and register a new battery.

  10. Coolant flush

A rising gauge or sweet smell. We pressure test the system, then refill with coolant of the right Hyundai type.

  11. Key and smart key repair

A dead fob or a car that will not recognise its key. We test the battery and fob, then repair or program.

  12. Body shop and paint

Parking scrapes and bumper damage. We repair and paint, then check parking sensors and cameras still work.

Common faults by model

Hyundai faults we see, model by model

Most Hyundais run a long time on basic care, but a few engines, gearboxes and parts have a documented history. Pick your model family to see the sign and what we check first.

Sonata and Santa Fe

Sonata 2011 to 2019, Santa Fe 2013 to 2019

Theta II bearing wear

Sign
Knock rising with revs or low oil. Manufacturer recalls blamed debris starving the rod bearings.
What we do
Check oil pressure, then ask the dealer about your VIN.
Sonata 2011 to 2014, Santa Fe 2013 to 2014

Steering coupler clunk

Sign
A click or thud through the wheel when turning at parking speed.
What we do
Confirm the noise, then replace the rubber coupler under bulletin 14-ST-002-1.
Santa Fe 2013 to 2015

ABS module leak

Sign
A burning smell or ABS light. A recall notice told owners to park outside until fixed.
What we do
Check the VIN, then inspect the module for fluid.

Tucson and Kona

Tucson 2016 and 2017, 1.6 turbo

DCT hesitation

Sign
A delay or judder pulling away in heat. A manufacturer recall reprogrammed the gearbox software on 41,000 Tucsons.
What we do
Check software level, clutch learning and codes, then road test.
Tucson and Kona, 1.6 turbo

DCT heat warning

Sign
A high transmission temperature message after crawling uphill or in stop go traffic.
What we do
Let it cool, then book a clutch check.
Tucson 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019, 2.4

Theta II on the Tucson

Sign
The same knock and oil warnings as the Sonata; these years were in the Theta II programme.
What we do
Check oil pressure and knock first.

Elantra, Accent and Creta

Elantra 2007 to 2014

Steering coupler clunk

Sign
A click through the wheel at low speed, often mistaken for suspension.
What we do
Confirm it on the lift, replace the coupler and calibrate.
Elantra 2011 to 2015, Accent 2012 to 2015

ABS module fire risk

Sign
Often no sign. An ABS light or burning smell means stop and call us.
What we do
Have the dealer check the VIN and fit the fuse.
Creta, Accent and Elantra with IVT

IVT fluid and heat

Sign
A whine or flare in revs under load, worse after long summer runs.
What we do
Check fluid condition and codes, then change fluid before blaming the gearbox.

Palisade, Azera and Staria

Azera 2012 to 2015

ABS and steering coupler

Sign
The same ABS recall and coupler click as the Sonata of those years.
What we do
Check the VIN for open recalls, then confirm the noise on the lift.
Palisade Limited and Calligraphy

Power rear seats

Sign
Sales halted in March 2026 after a seat failed to detect an occupant.
What we do
Ask Juma Al Majid to check it; avoid powered folding near children.
Palisade, Azera and Staria V6

Heat and oil on big V6 engines

Sign
A rising gauge in traffic or oil marks under the car.
What we do
Pressure test the cooling system and trace leaks before quoting seals.

Theta II from Wikipedia (Hyundai Theta engine) and Theta II lifetime warranty report (October 2019). ABS from park outside recall alert (September 2023). Steering coupler from Rick's Free Auto Repair Advice (bulletin 14-ST-002-1). DCT from recall notice 16V-628 (August 2016), Hyundai bulletin 17-01-024 (March 2017) and the Hyundai owner's manual, DCT warning messages. Palisade seats from Wikipedia (Hyundai Palisade). Warning signs

Hyundai warning signs, by how fast to act

A knocking engine and a weak AC are not the same problem. Read across each row to decide what to do next, and send us a photo of the dash if you are unsure.

Stop driving

  • Knock that rises with revsOn a Theta II engine this can be bearing wear. Driving on can seize the engine, so switch off and call us.
  • Transmission Hot, park with engine onThe DCT has protected its clutches. Stay parked with the engine running until the dash says it has cooled.
  • Burning smell or smoke from the bonnetOn recalled years this can be the ABS module. Stop, switch off, step away and call for recovery.

Book this week

  • Judder or delay pulling awayEarly DCT clutch or software trouble on 1.6 turbo models. A software and clutch check now costs less.
  • Steady engine lightA stored fault such as a sensor or misfire. Drive gently; an early scan keeps the repair small.
  • Clunk through the steering wheelOften the steering coupler on older Elantra, Sonata and Santa Fe. Annoying rather than dangerous, but get it confirmed.

Drive in soon

  • AC weaker than last monthA slow leak or a dirty condenser gets worse each summer week. Early testing often saves the compressor.
  • Faint whine from the IVTFluid may be tired from heat. A fluid check and change is far cheaper than a gearbox.
  • Squeal when brakingPads near their wear limit. Leave it and the discs will need replacing too.
Engines and gearboxes

Theta II, Smartstream and DCT: what drives your Hyundai

Hyundai in the UAE uses five petrol engine families and four kinds of gearbox. Knowing the pairing tells us where to look first, and tells you what to watch between services.

EngineGearboxModelsWhat it means for you
1.6 Gamma MPi6 speed automaticAccent 2018 to 2022, Creta 2016 to 2020, older ElantraSimple and long lived. Most work is oil, AC, brakes and gearbox fluid.
2.0 Nu MPi6 speed auto or IVTElantra 2016 to 2020, Tucson 2016 to 2021, KonaA steady everyday engine. Keep the oil topped up between services.
1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 Smartstream MPiIVTAccent 2023 on, Creta 2021 on, Elantra 2021 on, Kona 2024 onThe IVT needs healthy fluid; Dubai heat ages it faster.
2.4 Theta II and 2.0 Theta II turbo6 speed automaticSonata 2011 to 2019, Santa Fe 2013 to 2020, Tucson 2.4Recall and extended engine warranty history. Listen for knock and check oil level often.
1.6 T-GDi turbo7 speed DCTTucson, Kona, Elantra SportHold the brake on slopes and do not creep on the throttle. Judder needs a software and clutch check.
2.5 Smartstream8 speed automaticSonata 2020 on, Tucson 2022 on, Santa Fe 2021 on, Palisade 2026 onStrong and modern. Most likely still under warranty.
3.3, 3.5 and 3.8 V66 or 8 speed automaticPalisade, Azera, Staria, older Santa FeBig engines in Dubai heat. Cooling and oil leaks are the checks that matter.
Four cylinder engine oil pressure and noise inspection
6AT / 8AT

Conventional automatics with a torque converter. Smooth and tough; shift quality depends on fluid and software.

IVT

Hyundai's CVT with a steel belt. Smooth and frugal, but whine or flare means a fluid check first.

7DCT

Two dry clutches, quick shifts, on the 1.6 turbo. Dislikes creeping in traffic and on ramps.

8DCT

A wet dual clutch on some 2.5 turbo Santa Fe models. Needs the correct fluid and software.

Buying a used Hyundai? Six checks before you pay

With 535 used Hyundais listed in Dubai, a 2014 Santa Fe and a 2023 Creta need very different checks. These six catch the costly faults, and you get the results in writing.

Pre purchase sheetHyundai
  • Engine from coldOn a Theta II we listen for bearing knock at start up, then check oil level, colour and pressure.
  • Gearbox on the roadWe pull away, creep and reverse to catch DCT judder, IVT whine or a harsh automatic shift.
  • Recalls and historyWe ask Juma Al Majid to check the VIN for open recalls and match the stamps to the listing.
  • AC under loadWe measure vent temperature at idle and on the road and look for condenser damage or oily traces.
  • Steering and brakesWe feel for steering coupler clunk, check the ABS module for fluid leaks and measure pads and discs.
  • Underbody and tyresOn the lift we check bushes, boots and tyre wear for kerb damage, leaks or bent suspension arms.

Hyundai repair questions answered

Costs, Theta II, DCT care, warning messages, AC, steering, warranty, repair times and used cars.

Ask on WhatsApp
Where can I get my Hyundai repaired in Dubai outside the dealer?

Mechanics in Al Quoz is an independent Hyundai workshop for the Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra, Sonata, Creta, Accent and Palisade, covering servicing, Theta II engine checks, DCT and automatic gearbox faults, AC and brakes. You get a free inspection and a written quote first. Warranty and recall work stays with Juma Al Majid.

Who is the official Hyundai dealer in the UAE, and what warranty applies?

Juma Al Majid is the official Hyundai distributor in the UAE. Hyundai UAE offers a 5 year factory warranty, and iCarTea reported 5 years or 150,000 km with 5 years of roadside assistance on recent offers. Check your own booklet, because terms change with the sale date.

How much does a Hyundai service cost in Dubai?

An oil and filter change on an Elantra or Accent costs about AED 200 to 350 at an independent garage and AED 350 to 500 at a dealer, as a guide, according to YallaMotor in July 2026. A 60,000 km major service runs about AED 1,285 to 2,020 for a sedan.

Is my Hyundai affected by the Theta II engine problem?

It may be if it has the 2.4 or 2.0 turbo Theta II, fitted to the 2011 to 2019 Sonata, 2013 to 2019 Santa Fe and some Tucsons. Manufacturer recalls and lifetime engine cover applied to affected cars. Ask Juma Al Majid to check your VIN, and book a check if the engine knocks.

Why does my Hyundai DCT judder or hesitate?

The 7 speed dual clutch gearbox on 1.6 turbo models can hesitate or judder pulling away, especially in heat and slow traffic. Hyundai issued software updates for it. We check software level, clutch learning and codes, then road test before suggesting any clutch work.

What does Transmission Hot, park with engine on mean on a Hyundai?

It means the dual clutch gearbox has overheated, usually after crawling uphill or in stop go traffic, and has protected its clutches. Stop safely, select Park and leave the engine running until the dash says it has cooled. If it keeps happening, book a clutch check.

Why is my Hyundai AC blowing warm air?

The usual causes are a slow refrigerant leak, a dirty or damaged condenser, a weak condenser fan or a tired compressor. We leak test first rather than just regassing. An AC service on a Hyundai in the GCC costs about AED 250 to 700 as a guide, according to YallaMotor.

What is the clunk in my Hyundai steering wheel?

On older Elantra, Sonata, Santa Fe and Azera models a click or thud through the wheel at parking speed is often the rubber steering coupler. Hyundai bulletin 14-ST-002-1 covers its replacement. It does not affect steering control, but we confirm it on the lift before replacing.

How long does a Hyundai repair take?

It depends on the job and on parts. Services, brakes, batteries and AC checks are usually short visits, while engine, gearbox and electrical faults need diagnosis first. We give you the expected time in writing with the quote, including any parts lead time.

Is it worth repairing an older Hyundai?

Usually yes, if the body is sound and the repair costs less than the value you lose selling it faulty. Most brakes, AC, steering and gearbox fluid jobs make sense. A seized Theta II engine on an old car is the one case where the numbers need a careful look first.

Can you inspect a used Hyundai before I buy it?

Yes. We listen to the engine from cold, road test the gearbox, ask the dealer about open recalls, measure AC output and check steering, brakes and the underbody on the lift. You get the results in writing before you pay. Dubizzle Dubai listed 535 used Hyundais on 14 October 2026.

Do you use genuine Hyundai parts?

We quote genuine Hyundai parts and quality aftermarket options side by side, so you choose with the prices in front of you. Fluids for the DCT, IVT and automatic gearboxes must match the Hyundai specification. Cars still under warranty should go to Juma Al Majid for covered repairs.
