What to check on your Navigator's year

2015 to 2019: 3.5 EcoBoost timing chain stretch. 2017 and 2018: brake master cylinder recall 25S37. 2018 to 2020: power running boards stop after low voltage. 2018 to 2021: owner reports of the power liftgate opening on its own.

Two seconds of rattle on a cold start
On 2015 to 2019 Navigators with the 3.5 twin turbo V6, the timing chains can stretch. The first sign is usually a short rattle for a second or two when the engine starts cold, which then goes quiet.
Left alone, a stretched chain can upset the engine timing, bring on the check engine light and misfires, and in time damage the engine. Caught early, it is a planned repair instead of a breakdown.

A soft brake pedal is never something to live with
Some 2017 and 2018 Navigators were recalled because the brake master cylinder can leak inside. The fluid disappears from the reservoir with no puddle under the car, and the front brakes get weaker.

Ten gears, and one recall in Park
The Navigator and Aviator use a 10 speed automatic. With so many gears, shift quality depends on clean fluid, healthy software and the gearbox learning how you drive. A recall also covered a missing roll pin that could stop Park from holding.

A roll pin may be missing in the 10 speed gearbox, so Park may not hold the car. It is a dealer recall and free, so check your VIN.

Why does my Lincoln Navigator rattle on a cold start?
On 2015 to 2019 Navigators with the 3.5 twin turbo V6, a short rattle on a cold start is a known sign of timing chain stretch. Have it checked early, before it causes misfires or engine damage.
Is there a brake recall on the Lincoln Navigator?
Yes. Some 2017 and 2018 Navigators were recalled (25S37) for a brake master cylinder that can leak internally, causing a soft pedal and weaker front brakes. The repair is free at the dealer.
