Both are cheap to fix early and expensive to ignore, especially in Dubai summer traffic. Here is how to spot each one.
Thermostat housing seep
- The sign
- A sweet smell after a hot drive, regular coolant top ups and a damp seam at the front of the engine.
- The cause
- The housing is plastic. Years of heat cycles open a hairline crack, so coolant slowly escapes.
- The fix
- Housing, gasket, thermostat and usually the temperature sensor replaced together. Guide cost about AED 2,400 to 4,000.
Timing chain tensioner
- The sign
- A rattle for 1 to 3 seconds on a cold start, then the engine goes quiet.
- The cause
- The tensioner loses oil pressure overnight, so the chain is slack until pressure builds. Over time this wears the chain and guides.
- The fix
- We confirm on a true cold start and read cam timing data before quoting tensioner or chain work.
Simple prevention: fresh oil at least every 12 months protects the chain and turbos, and replacing the housing past about 80,000 km avoids a roadside surprise.
ZF 8 speed automatic
Maserati rough shifts? Here is how we fix them
Ghibli, Levante and Quattroporte use a strong ZF 8HP eight speed automatic. Most complaints come from fluid that was never changed, not from a broken gearbox.
The sign
A jolt from first to second when warm, flaring between gears or a light shudder at steady motorway speed.
Scan
We read gearbox codes and adaptation values to rule out a mechanical fault before any work.
Fluid and filter
A full ZF service at the correct temperature, due every 80,000 to 100,000 km. Guide cost about AED 1,700 to 2,400.
Relearn and test
We reset the adaptations so the gearbox learns smooth shifts again, then road test to confirm.
Levante and Quattroporte
Maserati suspension and brakes, corner by corner
The Levante uses air suspension and some Quattroporte models have rear air springs. Heat dries the rubber and makes the compressor work harder.

Sits low after parking
One corner low after standing overnight usually means a leaking air spring or line. We leak test each corner before replacing anything.

Compressor wear
Foreign Automotive puts compressor life at about 80,000 to 130,000 km. A leak shortens that a lot. Guide cost about AED 3,700 to 5,800 with the dryer.

Skyhook dampers
Adaptive dampers can leak or log faults. We read each corner by scan and road test before replacing any damper.

Pulling when braking
A front caliper that does not fully release makes the car pull and wears one side faster. Sensitive wear sensors can also warn early.

Why one Maserati module can silence everything
Maserati audio and screens run on a fibre optic loop called MOST. Signals pass from module to module, so one failed unit can break the whole chain.

Why is my Maserati Ghibli losing coolant?
A Ghibli losing coolant usually has a seeping plastic thermostat housing on its 3.0 V6. Signs are a sweet smell after a hot drive or regular top ups. The repair is quoted after a pressure test, and the housing, gasket, thermostat and sensor are usually replaced together.
Why does my Maserati rattle on a cold start?
A rattle for 1 to 3 seconds on a cold start points to the timing chain tensioner on the 3.0 V6. Have it checked early, as it can lead to chain slap and engine damage.
Why does my Levante sit low after parking?
