The Porsche 911 IMS bearing, act now or pay later
The intermediate shaft bearing drives the camshafts on the M96 and M97 flat six engines in the 911 and Boxster from about 1997 to 2008. When it fails, debris goes through the oil and the timing can jump, which usually destroys the engine.
On 996 cars the bearing can be replaced as a preventive job, often with the clutch. Bore scoring, scratches inside the cylinders, is the other known risk on some 3.8 litre 997.1 engines. A borescope check shows it before you buy.
Engine rebuild or replacement after failure, a far bigger bill than the preventive job.
Cayenne
The Porsche Cayenne fault sheet
The Cayenne is Dubai's second most listed Porsche and works hard as a family car. These are the four areas that cause most of its bills, and what we check before we quote.
- Cooling
- The plastic expansion tank can crack around 100,000 km, water pumps fail and radiators pinhole on older cars. Water pump and coolant: quoted after a pressure test.
- Air suspension
- Air springs often start leaking after about five years, causing sagging and ride height faults. The compressor then overworks. Air spring: quoted per corner after a leak test.
- Brakes
- Big wheels wear pads faster, discs warp from heat and calipers can seize. Pads: quoted by wheel size and pad type.
- Electrics
- Battery drain from a parasitic draw, door and tailgate actuators, and screens that freeze. Battery drain diagnosis: quoted after a draw test.

Which 911s have the IMS bearing problem?
The risk applies to 911 and Boxster engines from about 1997 to 2008. The 2000 to 2005 single row bearing on the 996 carries the highest risk. These are the M96 and M97 engines. The 997.2 from 2009 uses the newer 9A1 engine without the IMS bearing.
How much does an IMS bearing retrofit cost?
A preventive IMS retrofit on a 996 is quoted after inspection and is often done with the clutch. It costs far less than an engine rebuild after a failure.
What is bore scoring?
Bore scoring is vertical scratching inside the cylinders, seen on some 3.8 litre 997.1 Carrera S and 4S engines. Early on there may be no symptoms. A borescope inspection is the best way to check.
Why is my Porsche leaking oil at the back of the engine?
On 996 and 997 911s, the rear main seal often weeps oil where the engine meets the gearbox. The gearbox has to come out to fix it, which is why many owners do it with the clutch.
Why is my Cayenne losing coolant?
Common causes are a cracked plastic expansion tank, a failing water pump or a pinhole in the radiator on older cars. We pressure test the system to find the leak before quoting.
Why does my Cayenne sit low after parking?
Air springs often start leaking after about five years, so a corner drops overnight and the compressor works harder. We leak test each corner before replacing anything.
Do you service the Porsche PDK gearbox?
Yes. We service PDK gearboxes on the 911, Macan, Panamera and others, and check for output seal leaks on early 991 cars.
Do you work on the Taycan?
Yes, for tyres, brakes, suspension, alignment and the 12 volt battery. High voltage battery and motor work goes to the Porsche Centre.
Will an independent service affect my Porsche warranty?
Warranty and Porsche Approved claims go to the official Porsche Centre. Once a car is outside cover, an independent workshop is a normal choice. Check your terms first.
Can you inspect a used Porsche before I buy it?
Yes. We borescope at risk engines, check IMS status, leaks, suspension, history and cover, then send a written report with photos.
