PLAN THE WORK

What does shock replacement cost?

Start with the suspension fitted to your car. A separate shock absorber, a spring-and-strut assembly, and an electronically controlled damper have different parts and labor requirements.

Conventional shock absorbers

AED 525–1,680Pair on one axle

Two standard replacement shocks and routine fitting. Adaptive dampers, air suspension, mounts, springs, and alignment are outside this estimate.

Conventional strut assemblies

AED 840–2,520Pair on one axle

Two conventional assemblies and routine fitting. Confirm whether the quoted assembly includes the spring, top mount, and bearing. Package contents vary.

Adaptive dampers and air struts

Vehicle-specific quoteDiagnosis and equipment dependent

Electronic controls, air leaks, sensors, and suspension faults need assessment before selecting a replacement unit.

These are Dubai market budgeting ranges, not fixed Mechanics prices. Both AED ranges include an allowance for 5% VAT. Send the model, year, and VIN for a written quote identifying the axle, quantity, part brand, labor, VAT, and any additional work. Pickup charges and availability are confirmed separately.

CHECK THE CAUSE

Not every suspension noise needs new shocks

Shocks control spring movement. Tires, springs, joints, and mounts can produce similar symptoms, so the inspection should establish what is worn before parts are ordered.

Repeated bouncing or floating
Weak damping is one possibility. Ride behavior, tire condition, mounting points, and the other suspension components need checking together.
Oil around the damper
A light film near a seal can be normal seepage. A wet body or dripping fluid is different and needs assessment. Worn dampers can also lose performance without leaking.
Clunks over bumps
Loose or worn top mounts, bearings, links, and bushings may be responsible. Replacing a shock alone will not correct a separate joint or mounting fault.
Uneven tire wear or pulling
Check tire pressures, alignment, and steering components as well as damping. A car sitting low may have a spring or air suspension problem.
If the car feels unstable, stop safely

A detached component, severe loss of control, or a tire rubbing the body calls for recovery rather than continuing to drive. Call to discuss the symptoms and transport options.

REPAIR OR REPLACE

Replace the failed part with the right scope

  • Leaking or damaged sealed shockReplacement is normally the appropriate route. Routine seal patching or refilling is not a reliable repair for a conventional sealed unit. Rebuilding only applies to designs specifically intended to be serviced.
  • Worn mount or damaged springThese are separate components. Their condition determines whether they should be included with the damper work.
  • One worn shock on an axlePlan to replace conventional shocks or struts as a matched axle pair to avoid uneven damping. A recently fitted or special system needs assessment against the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Front and rear wearReplacing a front pair does not automatically mean all four are due. The rear axle should be inspected and quoted on its own condition.

FROM CHECK TO HANDOVER

What the replacement involves

  1. Identify the suspensionConfirm the vehicle and equipment, inspect the affected axle, and check related mounts, springs, boots, and bump stops.
  2. Agree the parts and totalReview the part specification, quantities, labor, and recommended extras. Additional diagnostic work or alignment should be identified before approval.
  3. Fit using the vehicle procedureRemove and install the agreed components with suitable spring-handling equipment where required. Fastener tightening and suspension settings follow the application.
  4. Check the resultRecheck fitment, clearances, noise, and ride behavior where a safe road test is appropriate. Electronic systems may also need a scan or prescribed setup.

Strut work can affect wheel geometry. Confirm whether an alignment check is required and included. A separate rear shock change does not always require the same adjustment.

PARTS THAT FIT YOUR CAR

Match the damper to the suspension

The VIN, axle, suspension code, and fitted equipment matter more than a generic front or rear label.

Genuine parts

Ask for the vehicle manufacturer's part number and availability. A genuine part can be useful where maintaining the original electronic or ride specification is the priority.

Compatible alternatives

Compare the named manufacturer, exact application, and written warranty terms. A supplier making original equipment does not mean every product it sells is the identical original part.

Adaptive equipment

Tell us about adjustable suspension, air suspension, or a suspension warning. A conventional shock is not a direct substitute for an electronically controlled unit.

Modified vehicles

Disclose lowering springs, lift kits, towing use, or other changes. Damper length, travel, and compatibility need checking before a part is recommended.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Shock replacement questions

Clear answers about timing, quantities, and the work your car may need.

When should shock absorbers be replaced?

There is no single mileage that suits every vehicle. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection schedule and have new bouncing, leakage, or instability checked. Condition, use, and the fitted suspension determine whether replacement is needed.

Are shocks and struts the same thing?

Both provide damping, but a strut is also a structural part of the suspension. A complete strut assembly may contain a spring and mount, while a bare replacement strut may not. The quote should state exactly what is included.

Can you replace just one shock absorber?

For normal wear, a matched pair on the same axle is the usual recommendation. Replacing all four is a separate decision based on both axles. An unusual failure on a recently replaced system needs individual assessment.

How long will the work take?

Timing depends on access, seized fasteners, the parts required, and any alignment or electronic setup. Ask for a confirmed workshop time after inspection and a parts availability check. Same-day completion is not assumed.

Will new shocks fix all the noises?

Only noises caused by the replaced components should improve. Worn mounts, links, bushings, or steering parts may need separate work. The inspection is intended to identify those causes before replacement.

Is alignment included in the estimate?

No. The market estimates above cover the stated parts and routine fitting. Ask whether the vehicle procedure requires an alignment check and whether adjustment is a separate line on your quote.

What warranty applies?

Request the applicable parts and workmanship terms in writing before approval. Coverage can depend on the selected part and the work performed. No universal warranty duration is assumed.

What should I send for a quote?

Send the make, model, year, VIN, and whether the problem is at the front or rear. Mention adaptive or air suspension, warning lights, modifications, and the symptoms. Photos of a leak can help, but they do not replace inspection.
