Choose the right next step

What is happening to your lights?

The symptom guides the first check. It does not prove that an expensive assembly is needed.

One light is out or flickering

The bulb or light source, holder, connector, supply and earth need checking. A loose connection can resemble a failed bulb. Repeated failures need their cause traced. For a confirmed replaceable bulb fault, see car bulb replacement.

The lens is cloudy or yellow

External surface oxidation may be suitable for restoration. A brighter bulb cannot clear a cloudy lens. Internal haze, reflector damage and deep cracking need a different assessment before a surface treatment is quoted.

There is water inside the lamp

A brief fine mist can clear normally. Persistent droplets or pooled water need the covers, seals, vents, housing and connections assessed. The entry point matters as much as drying the unit.

The beam or adaptive function is wrong

An uneven beam, levelling warning or failed turning function needs more than a visual bulb check. Lamp mounts, control units and the relevant vehicle systems may be involved. Confirm the required adjustment or model-specific procedure.

If a headlamp fails or visibility is inadequate, avoid driving in darkness and arrange a safe inspection. Report burning smells, smoke, exposed wiring or repeated fuse failure promptly. Xenon and electronic lamp work is suitable for professional assessment.
Headlight restoration

Restore a suitable cloudy lens

For an intact polycarbonate lens with external oxidation, suitable preparation and polishing can improve clarity. The existing coating and extent of damage determine the treatment. Ask which final protective finish is included rather than comparing polishing prices alone.

External hazeSurface oxidationCondition checked first
Polishing a cloudy headlamp lens with surrounding paint masked
Headlamp lens restoration with the surrounding paint protected.
01

Check what can be restored

Restoration cannot repair a cracked housing, damaged reflector, failed LED electronics or broken mounting tabs. A lamp with internal contamination needs its cause assessed. Before-and-after appearance should not be presented as proof of beam performance.

02

Agree the visible limitations

Point out existing cracks, peeling coatings, previous sanding and any protective film. Confirm which marks may remain, whether one lamp or the pair will be treated, and the finishing and aftercare instructions for the selected process. No universal lifespan or warranty is promised for every lens condition.

03

Prepare and protect the surface

For a suitable plastic lens, restoration may involve cleaning, protecting adjacent paint, controlled surface preparation, refining and polishing. Removing a degraded surface can also remove existing UV protection. Ask how the chosen finishing process addresses that and what the expected limitations are.

Aftercare for the chosen treatment

A clear appearance on collection does not establish a guaranteed lifespan. Confirm the product-specific curing and washing instructions, including any restriction on chemicals or protective-film installation. Follow those instructions rather than a universal waiting period.

Afterwards, use the advised cleaning method and avoid abrasive household treatments. Report returning haze or moisture so it can be assessed rather than repeatedly covering the symptom.

Know which system is fitted

A bulb fault and a lamp electronics fault need different work

The same model can have different headlight equipment by trim and year. Mechanics can assess the fitted system before a replacement is ordered. Tell us whether dipped beam, high beam, DRL or an adaptive function is affected.

System fittedComponents to distinguishWhat changes the repair
HalogenReplaceable bulb, holder, wiring and reflector or projector.Correct bulb type and rating, holder condition and access. A damaged connector should be addressed rather than fitting another bulb into it.
HID, xenon or bi-xenonGas-discharge light source, ballast and ignition components. Bi-xenon designs can use a shutter for high and low beam.A starting or flickering fault is not proof that the bulb alone has failed. If one beam mode works, the switching mechanism may need checking. High-voltage components require professional handling.
LED or bi-LEDLED light source, driver/control unit, optical components and the fitted cooling arrangement. Some parts are serviceable and others are integrated. A failed high-beam function can involve a shutter on some designs. Confirm the available repair parts for that lamp.
Adaptive, Matrix LED or laser-assistedLighting electronics, controlled beam functions and vehicle inputs. Equipment differs between models.Identify the failed function, supported component repair and setup procedure. A matrix or laser label does not establish universal repairability or a fixed price.

Lamp designs vary. These are repair distinctions, not a promise that every internal component can be repaired on every vehicle.

Lens and collision damage

Choose the repair that matches the damage

The front cover is often called headlight glass, but many modern lamps use a polycarbonate lens. Surface restoration, a replacement cover and a complete lamp are different jobs. Material and construction must be checked before choosing a treatment.

External surface damage

Assess restoration

Suitable external surface marks may be treated without opening the lamp. A crack, deep crazing or damage inside the cover is a different problem. Plastic-lens restoration procedures should not be assumed suitable for glass.

A separate cover may be available

Check lens replacement

A separate cover replacement is an option only where a compatible part and an appropriate repair method are available. Establish whether the housing, optics and electronics are still sound, and how the lamp will be resealed and checked. An inexpensive unverified cover can leave the fit, seal or light pattern unresolved.

Housing, brackets or adjusters

Assess housing repair

Look beyond the visible lens. Broken mounting points, distorted supports, damaged adjusters or a cracked housing can affect lamp position even when the bulb still lights. A cosmetic patch does not establish that the unit is securely mounted or correctly aimed.

Include access and fitting in the quote

Tell us whether the lamp or bumper has already been removed. Confirm any required mounting repair, assembly replacement and beam check on the quotation. Access work, damaged brackets and additional parts should be identified separately so a small visible crack does not become an unexplained fitted bill.

Bulbs, modules and complete lamps

Match the part before ordering

Halogen lamps commonly use replaceable bulbs. Xenon systems also involve an igniter or ballast. Some LED systems have replaceable components, while others integrate the light source into the lamp. The label LED does not mean that a universal LED bulb will solve the fault.

An apparently similar unit may omit a module or use a different software version. An imported used lamp should not be selected on shape alone.

Compare the part being supplied

The quote should identify the source, condition, functions and applicable coverage.

Genuine part

Confirm the exact part reference for the vehicle and what comes with the unit. Ask whether modules or other items are supplied separately, and which fitting and setup work is included.

Compatible alternative

With an aftermarket unit, establish compatibility and included lighting functions. Compare the fitted cost and coverage for the identified part rather than assuming similar appearance means the same equipment.

Used assembly

Ask about mounting damage, moisture history, lens condition, supplied modules and applicable coverage. Inspection can reveal fitting or programming costs that change the cheaper purchase-price comparison.

For model-specific front lighting information, visit Audi headlight repair. Share the exact vehicle details even when its exterior matches another model year.

Adaptive headlight repair

Choose the lighting function that is failing

A lamp can still illuminate while an adaptive function has stopped working. Describe the warning and the change you notice, rather than assuming the complete headlamp has failed.

Beam position and turning

Too low, too high or not turning

Automatic levelling systems can depend on vehicle-height sensors, their links, wiring, actuators and control units. Damage or an incorrect basic setting can affect beam position. Cornering functions may use other vehicle inputs. The exact fault needs to be identified before replacing a lamp.

Tell us what changed

Mention recent suspension work, a change in ride height, a removed headlamp or an impact. This history helps distinguish a physical mounting problem from a sensor, setup or electrical fault.

Controlled lighting functions

Matrix segments or high-beam assistance fail

On advanced systems, the lamp and vehicle electronics work together. A warning may involve lamp electronics, communication or another relevant system. Some designs also use cooling fans. Diagnosis and the manufacturer’s repair instructions determine what can be replaced separately.

Record the affected function

Share the exact warning, the affected side and whether the main light, individual segments or automatic high beam have stopped working. Keep any useful photo or video of an intermittent fault.

After lamp or control-unit work

Identify the setup actually required

Ask whether the proposed job needs lamp coding, a basic setting, optical adjustment or a separate sensor calibration. These are different operations. Camera or ADAS calibration should be quoted when the specific repair requires it, rather than added automatically to every headlight change.

Coding or basic setting
Integrate or initialise a component when the vehicle procedure requires it.
Optical adjustment
Check the beam using the specified vehicle conditions.
Separate calibration
Identify sensor or camera work only when required for the repair.
Electrical and moisture faults

Check the circuit and the water entry point

Replacing the same bulb or fuse repeatedly can leave the original fault unresolved. Explain when the problem occurs and what has already been changed.

Electrical assessment

Trace the repeated failure

  1. Identify the affected circuit

A diagnostic message helps locate the affected function, but the relevant supply, earth, connectors and component operation still need assessment. Check the affected side against the other lamp where appropriate. Previous splices, accessory wiring and impact repairs are useful information for the technician.

  2. Check low beam, high beam or both

Record which function fails and whether it affects one side or both. The assessment may include the relevant fuse, power supply, earth connection and voltage drop under load. Switching circuits and any fitted relay are considered using the vehicle’s wiring information.

  3. Record when it happens

Tell us if the light fails only when warm, after rain or washing, or when another electrical load switches on. Photographs or a short video can preserve an intermittent symptom that is absent during the appointment.

Moisture assessment

Mist or persistent water?

Light film that clearsCan occur in a ventilated lamp.
Droplets, pooling or corrosionThe cause and any damage need assessment.

Ventilated lamps can show temporary condensation. Persistent droplets, pooled water or corrosion call for checking covers, seals, vents and connections. A damaged housing may need replacement. Avoid improvised drilling, blocked vents or a cosmetic sealant treatment that makes future servicing difficult.

Photos help the assessment

Describe whether one or both lamps are affected and whether the moisture clears. Photos taken before the unit dries help the assessment. Any moisture-related damage to a driver or connector should be included in the repair decision.

Protect the circuit while the cause is checked

A blown fuse or a stored fault code is a finding, not a complete diagnosis. The cause still needs checking. On electronic lamps, actuator tests and communication checks may be appropriate. Do not fit a higher-rated fuse or bypass a protective circuit to keep a faulty light working.

Front and rear car lights

Check the function that has failed

A lighting check can cover more than the main headlamps. Describe the failed function so the right front or rear circuit can be assessed.

Daytime running lights

DRLs are a separate function even when they share a housing with the headlamp. A failed strip may involve a driver or an integrated lamp component. Read about daytime running light replacement and mention whether the main beam still works.

Tail and brake lights

Rear position, brake, reverse and indicator functions should be distinguished when reporting a fault. A combined rear unit may have separate circuits. See tail light repair and replacement for rear assemblies and bulbs.

Fog lights and indicators

Tell us which function and side is affected. A fog lamp fault can concern the bulb, housing, switch or wiring. Indicator faults may involve the bulb, connector or integrated electronics. They should not be priced as a complete main headlight without assessment.

Proposed lighting changes

A colour change or brighter retrofit is different from repairing a failed original light. Physical fit alone does not establish optical, electrical or regulatory suitability. Confirm the permitted configuration and compatibility before ordering an upgrade.

Agree the repair

Confirm the affected function, proposed repair, selected parts, fitting work, tax-inclusive total and expected time. Deeper diagnosis and additional findings are discussed separately.

02

Fit and configure

Follow the procedure for the vehicle and part. Some replacement lamps or control units require coding or initialisation. Optical adjustment and any separate calibration requirement are identified for the exact system rather than promised universally.

03

Check the functions

Check the repaired light and relevant beam or levelling functions, connections, mounting and any applicable warning. Confirm aftercare and the written warranty conditions for the chosen work. Ask which checks were carried out and which related findings remain.

Your collection checklist

Beam and operating conditions

Ask which light functions were tested and whether the beam setting was checked after the work. Optical aiming uses the vehicle’s specified conditions and suitable equipment. Tyre pressures, loading, ride height and the condition of the lens can matter to the result.

Parts, repair record and coverage

Confirm the supplied part reference, repaired side, any coding or basic-setting work, final invoice and warranty terms. If an intermittent fault could not be reproduced, ask what was tested and what information to record if it returns. A cleared warning alone should not be presented as proof that every underlying fault has been resolved.

Before you book

Headlight repair questions

A photograph and the model year help us distinguish a bulb, lens or electrical fault. A precise quote follows the vehicle and repair requirements.

How much does headlight repair cost in Dubai?

Published Dubai market examples advertise halogen bulb replacement at AED 100 to 150, HID or replaceable LED bulbs at AED 250 to 600, lens restoration at AED 150 to 300 and complete units at AED 900 to 3,000 or more. These are comparison figures, not Mechanics tariffs. The source does not confirm VAT, per-lamp quantities or every fitting inclusion. Request an itemised total for your exact car.

Can you repair a headlight instead of replacing the whole unit?

Sometimes. A compatible replaceable bulb, damaged connector, external driver or repairable surface haze may allow a smaller repair. Internal damage, broken mounting points, a cracked sealed housing or a non-serviceable integrated light source may require an assembly. The inspection determines which option is suitable.

Can cloudy or yellow headlights be restored?

External oxidation can often be improved by suitable surface restoration. Internal haze, deep cracks, damaged reflectors and electrical failures are different problems. Ask which finishing protection is included and what limitations apply to the condition of your lens.

Does condensation mean my headlight is broken?

A light film that clears can be normal in a ventilated lamp. Persistent droplets, pooled water or corrosion need assessment of the seals, rear covers, vents, housing and connections. Drying the lamp alone does not resolve an ongoing entry point.

Why does the same headlight bulb keep failing?

The bulb may be incompatible, the holder damaged, the connection poor or moisture present. The circuit and supply also need checking. Record which side fails and how soon after replacement, so the diagnosis can address the cause instead of repeating the same bulb change.

Do LED and xenon headlights need coding?

Some replacement lamps or control units require model-specific coding, initialisation or adjustment. Others do not. Confirm the vehicle specification, supplied modules and manufacturer procedure before ordering. Coding, beam adjustment and any separate calibration should be identified on the quote.

Should both headlight bulbs be replaced together?

Replacing a pair can help match colour and output when the other bulb is similarly aged. It is not automatically necessary to replace two complete assemblies because one side failed. Inspect both sides and compare the cost and condition before choosing.

How long will the repair take?

A straightforward accessible bulb replacement is a shorter job than removing a bumper, tracing a circuit or sourcing an adaptive lamp. Confirm the appointment, parts availability, workshop time and collection estimate after the vehicle and fault are assessed. Pickup time is separate.

Is a brighter LED conversion always suitable?

No. A bulb that physically fits is not necessarily compatible with the reflector, beam pattern, electronics or applicable lighting requirements. Repairing the approved original configuration is usually the first option to assess. Discuss any proposed change before ordering parts.

What warranty comes with headlight work?

Coverage depends on the selected part and the agreed work. Ask for the supplier or workshop coverage, duration, exclusions and claim process in writing. No universal duration applies to every bulb, restored lens, used assembly or electrical repair.

Why does high beam work when low beam does not?

The functions may use separate bulbs or share an optical module, depending on the lamp. The affected light source, supply, switching mechanism and controls need checking. A working high beam does not rule out a lamp or circuit fault.

Can only the headlight lens be replaced?

Sometimes, when a compatible cover and suitable repair method are available. The housing, mounting, optics and electronics must also be sound. Confirm resealing, testing and coverage before choosing a cover replacement instead of an assembly.

Does a levelling warning always mean the headlamp needs replacing?

No. The relevant system can include height sensors, links, wiring, actuators and control units. Recent suspension or lamp work can also make the setup important. Diagnosis should identify the affected part and any required basic setting.

Will every replacement headlight need ADAS calibration?

No. Lamp coding, a basic setting, beam adjustment and camera calibration are different operations. Follow the requirements for the exact vehicle and repair. Any separate calibration should be explained and identified on the quote.
