Repair figures are third-party advertised planning estimates checked on 10 October 2026, with 5% VAT added to explicitly pre-VAT figures. They are not confirmed Mechanics tariffs or a market average. Advertised inclusions are not itemised consistently, so the listed scope must be checked in your quote. Premium gearboxes can cost more. Your itemised total should show parts, fluid, labour, additional diagnosis and VAT.

Choose the appropriate work

Repair, rebuild or replace?

The useful question is what has failed and what remains serviceable. A gearbox warning alone does not justify replacing the complete unit.

Service or targeted repair

When the fault is limited

A leak, service requirement, connector fault, sensor, solenoid or serviceable valve body may need a focused repair. The recommendation should explain the test result behind it.

  • Retain usable components
  • Confirm the fluid and repair procedure
  • Recheck the original complaint

Rebuild the existing unit

When internal wear can be repaired

Overhaul means dismantling and inspecting the gearbox, then replacing the required worn or damaged parts. The casing and remaining components must be suitable for reuse.

  • Assess gears, bearings and friction elements
  • Compare parts availability and total cost
  • Include reassembly, setup and testing

Install a replacement

When it is the better overall choice

A replacement can be worth considering for severe damage, unavailable repair parts or an uneconomic rebuild. Compare a new, remanufactured or used unit by condition and cover.

  • Match the exact gearbox code
  • Confirm installation and electronic setup
  • Check the unit and labour warranty
Identify the installed transmission

The gearbox type changes the work

Your model, year, engine and VIN help identify the actual unit. Different transmissions within the same brand can need different fluids, service parts and repair procedures.

DSG and S tronic

These dual-clutch transmissions can have wet or dry clutches, with different service requirements. Low-speed judder, clutch wear and control faults need to be distinguished before selecting work.

A clutch pack, hydraulic control assembly and software setup are separate considerations. Ask what testing supports a mechatronic repair and which adaptations are required afterwards.

ZF 8HP automatic

The eight-speed 8HP family uses a torque converter. A fluid service, valve body repair, converter problem and internal clutch wear are different jobs, even when the driver reports similar symptoms.

ZF guidance requires the correct fluid, service components and temperature-dependent level procedure. The installed variant decides the specification rather than the number of gears alone.

CVT transmission

A belt or chain CVT uses variable pulleys rather than the stepped gear changes of a conventional automatic. Pressure control, valve body faults and belt or pulley damage can require different repairs.

Use the specified CVT fluid. A hybrid system marketed as an e-CVT can have a different design, so it should not automatically receive the same diagnosis or fluid service.

Mercedes 7G and 9G TRONIC

These seven-speed and nine-speed automatics have variant-specific service and electronic requirements. Identify the installed unit before choosing a fluid, filter, pan or control component.

A shifting complaint may involve hydraulic operation, electronics or internal wear. Replacement electronics can require vehicle-specific setup, with that work confirmed in the estimate.

Understand the finding

What the inspection needs to establish

Tell us whether the fault appears cold, once warm, in one gear or when selecting Drive or Reverse. That detail helps make the checks relevant.

Fault data and electrical checksA scan identifies stored faults and available operating data. Wiring, connectors, supply voltage and related engine faults may need checking. A code naming a solenoid does not prove that the solenoid itself has failed.
Fluid condition and hydraulic operationThe correct level procedure, leaks, fluid condition and pressure behaviour help separate a service issue from a deeper fault. Debris can be useful evidence when a pan is removed, but an oil change cannot undo internal wear.
The reason for the recommendationAsk what is faulty, what can remain in use and what further dismantling might reveal. The quote should distinguish the identified repair from additional work that is only a possibility.

Vibration and clunks can also involve mounts or the wider drivetrain. If inspection points to a drive shaft fault or an AWD transfer case problem, that work is assessed separately from the gearbox.

Describe what changed

Which symptoms need attention?

The symptom guides the assessment. It is not a diagnosis or a guaranteed repair price.

Slipping or delayed engagement

Revs rising without the expected acceleration, or a long pause before Drive or Reverse engages, needs investigation. Tell us if the behaviour changes as the car warms up. Avoid repeatedly revving to force engagement.

Jerking, shudder or noise

Record the speed, gear and driving condition where it occurs. A shift-related jolt, take-off judder and motorway vibration can have different causes. Do not make recordings while driving or stand near moving components.

Warning or restricted gears

Share a photo of the message and describe any loss of drive. A restricted operating mode needs proper diagnosis. Clearing codes or disconnecting the battery does not repair the cause and can remove useful fault information.

Loss of drive, overheating or a substantial fluid leak means you should stop safely and contact the workshop about recovery. Follow the vehicle handbook. Tell us if the car cannot roll or is stuck in Park so suitable loading can be arranged.

A routine drain and refill is not the same as a full fluid exchange. The appropriate method depends on the gearbox, condition and manufacturer procedure. Do not assume a flush is included or suitable for every fault.

Maintenance with the correct specification

A fluid service has a defined scope

Transmission fluid is not interchangeable with engine oil. The right service begins with the installed gearbox and its requirements.

Fluid, filter and panConfirm the approved fluid specification and quantity, whether the filter is separately replaceable or integrated into the pan, and which seals or fasteners are required.
Level setting and leak checksSome automatics require level checks within a prescribed fluid-temperature range. Correct filling and leak checks matter as much as the oil brand. Follow the exact procedure for the unit.
A schedule for your vehicleUse the vehicle and transmission manufacturer guidance, your service history and operating conditions. There is no single replacement interval for all DSG, ZF, CVT and Mercedes transmissions.
Manual gearboxes and internal repairs

Separate clutch faults from gearbox damage

A hard gear change does not always mean damaged gears. Clutch release, hydraulic operation, cables or linkages can affect selection.

Grinding in a particular gear, bearing noise or a gearbox that jumps out of gear can lead to internal inspection. Where appropriate, a rebuild assesses gears, synchronisers, bearings and seals, replacing the parts that have failed or are outside specification.

The quote should explain whether gearbox removal, a clutch or flywheel, release components and oil are separate items. A clutch replacement is not automatically a gearbox overhaul.

For either manual or automatic internal work, compare the remaining condition of the unit with a replacement. Cooling-system contamination or damaged associated components must also be addressed where found, rather than fitting a repaired unit into an unresolved problem.

Parts and replacement units. Check the actual part manufacturer or unit supplier, gearbox code, condition and included electronic setup. New, remanufactured and used units have different costs and histories. An OEM label alone does not establish compatibility.

Warranty terms. Ask for the cover attached to the agreed work, including parts and labour, duration or mileage, maintenance conditions, exclusions and the claim procedure. A parts supplier's cover does not automatically pay for removal and refitting.

Timing and final checks. Routine servicing is a smaller job than dismantling and rebuilding. Confirm parts availability and the estimated collection date. Handover should address leaks, relevant warnings, gear engagement and testing appropriate to the repair. Keep the invoice and service instructions.

Gearbox repair questions

Practical answers about prices, repair choices and the workshop visit.

How much does transmission repair cost in Dubai?

Published Dubai planning estimates, with 5% VAT added, are AED 262.50–630 for a fluid and filter service, AED 420–1,260 for a solenoid or sensor replacement, AED 2,100–5,775 for valve body or mechatronic repair and AED 5,250–12,600 for a rebuild. These are third-party advertised estimates, not Mechanics prices. The installed gearbox, fault and included work determine your quote. Specialist CVT, dual-clutch and luxury-car work may exceed these figures.

Are gearbox repair and transmission repair the same service?

For most passenger-car enquiries, gearbox and transmission describe the same gear-changing unit. This page covers service, fault diagnosis, component repair, rebuild and replacement. A transfer case, drive shaft or differential is a separate part of the drivetrain and can need different work.

Will changing the oil fix slipping or a warning light?

Not necessarily. The correct fluid service can address a maintenance need, but it cannot repair worn internal parts or an electrical fault. The checks should establish the fluid condition and level, stored faults and likely cause before a service is proposed as a remedy.

Can a CVT or DSG be repaired instead of replaced?

Sometimes. A serviceable control component, valve body or clutch-related fault can allow a targeted repair. Belt, chain, pulley, gear or casing damage may change the decision. The gearbox variant, extent of damage, available parts and repair warranty must be considered before choosing repair or replacement.

How long will my car need to stay?

The workshop confirms timing after the required work and parts availability are known. A routine service normally needs less workshop time than removal and internal repairs. A rebuild involves dismantling, sourcing parts, reassembly and testing, so plan for several working days rather than a same-day promise. Ask for a completion estimate and any parts-ordering delay with your quote.

What warranty applies to a gearbox repair?

Ask Mechanics for the warranty terms attached to the chosen repair or replacement before approving it. Confirm the covered components and labour, time or mileage limit, servicing conditions, exclusions and how to report a fault. A used unit, a remanufactured unit and a repair can have different cover. No universal warranty duration is stated on this page.

Can I drive the car to the workshop?

Stop safely and arrange suitable recovery if drive is unreliable, the gearbox is overheating, fluid is leaking heavily or the car will not engage a gear. Follow the vehicle handbook and contact Mechanics before travelling. Tell the team if the car is stuck in Park or cannot roll so the transport arrangement suits it.
