The fault to know about

The Alfa Romeo MultiAir unit, caught early or late

The most expensive common fault on modern Alfa petrols is the MultiAir unit, an oil powered valve unit that controls the intake valves. It is fitted to the 1.4 MultiAir in the Giulietta and MiTo, and to the 2.0 turbo four cylinder (the GME engine family) in the Giulia and Stelvio.

The unit is very sensitive to oil. Stretched service intervals, the wrong grade or a low level can make it stick, and Dubai heat in stop and go traffic makes oil age faster.

Caught earlyAbout AED 985

Oil and filter to the correct spec, codes read and the unit tested. Often that is all it needs.

Engines, platforms and gearboxes

What sits under an Alfa Romeo

Knowing the hardware tells us where to look first. Alfa Romeo is part of Stellantis, and its cars on Dubai roads fall into three groups.

Giulia and Stelvio

Giorgio platform

Rear or Q4 all wheel drive, a ZF 8 speed automatic, and either the 2.0 turbo MultiAir petrol or the 2.9 twin turbo V6 in the Quadrifoglio. Faults lean towards electrics, the brake system and the MultiAir unit.

Giulietta, MiTo and 4C

MultiAir and TCT

The 1.4 MultiAir and 1750 TBi turbo petrols, often with the TCT six speed dual dry clutch gearbox. The TCT dislikes heat and slow traffic, and the MultiAir unit needs correct spec oil.

Tonale

The newest Alfa

The Tonale shares its platform with the Jeep Compass. Most are still under factory warranty, so covered faults go to the dealer first and we handle the rest.

Recalls and warranty first

Gargash is the Alfa Romeo dealer in Dubai, and recall work there is free. So before any brake, fuel or engine repair on a Giulia or Stelvio, we check your VIN for open campaigns and send you to the dealer when that is the right answer.

Alfa Romeo in a Dubai summer

Dubai heat is hard on Alfa Romeo electrics

Many Alfa faults start with a weak battery or charging fault. Heat ages batteries fast, and the electronics then throw messages that look far worse than the real problem.

  1. Test the battery before summer. A tired battery causes "Start&Stop unavailable", steering warnings and random faults.
  2. Keep the cooling system healthy. Coolant level, radiator and fans take the strain in traffic at 45°C.
  3. Clear the AC drain. A blocked drain can put water in the passenger footwell and onto the wiring.

Why trust this page

How we checked this Alfa Romeo guide

Alfa Romeo prices are rarely published in Dubai, so we show every source, label every price as a guide and say plainly what belongs at the dealer.

01

Sources we checked

Fault patterns from WhoCanFixMyCar and Service4Service, prices from Alfaworkshop UK, recalls from Jalopnik (NHTSA 18V-636) and the dealer from ZigWheels UAE, all checked 14 October 2026.

02

How we price

UK prices converted to dirhams are guides, never our tariffs. Your real price comes from a free inspection and a written, itemised quote, with genuine and quality aftermarket parts side by side where both exist.

03

What we send elsewhere

Open recalls, factory software campaigns and faults on cars under warranty go to Gargash, the official dealer. We check your VIN before we quote.

04

Who reviews it

The Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz. We review this page when recalls, warranty terms or prices change. Last update 14 October 2026.

Alfa Romeo questions answered

MultiAir, warning messages, gearboxes, recalls and costs.

Ask on WhatsApp
What does "Engine power reduced" mean on an Alfa Romeo?

The engine computer has limited power to protect the engine, usually after a misfire, a boost leak or a MultiAir fault. On 2017 and 2018 2.0 turbo Giulias and Stelvios, check the misfire recall first. We read the stored codes before replacing any part.

What is the MultiAir unit and why does it fail?

It is an oil powered unit that opens the intake valves on the 1.4 MultiAir and 2.0 turbo engines. It fails mostly from old, low or wrong grade oil. Signs are hard cold starts, "Start&Stop unavailable", power loss and a misfire on one cylinder.

Why does my Alfa say "Start&Stop unavailable"?

Most often the battery is weak or not charging well, so the car turns stop start off. On 1.4 MultiAir cars it can also be an early sign of a MultiAir problem. A battery and charging test is the first step.

Why does my Giulietta or MiTo gearbox drop into neutral?

The TCT dual clutch gearbox can show a warning, shift harshly or drop into neutral until it cools down. Heat and slow traffic make it worse. We read the gearbox codes, check the actuator and clutch wear, then quote the fix.

Is there water in my Giulia's footwell because of a leak?

Often it is the AC condensation drain, not a body leak. If the drain blocks or leaks, water collects in the passenger footwell. A drain fix stops it, and we dry and check any wiring it reached.

Where can I get my Alfa Romeo repaired in Dubai outside the dealer?

Mechanics in Al Quoz is an independent Alfa Romeo workshop for the Giulia, Stelvio, Tonale, Giulietta and MiTo, covering servicing, MultiAir and turbo faults, brakes, electrics and TCT gearboxes. You get a free inspection and a written quote first. Recall and warranty work stays with Gargash, the official dealer, and we check your VIN before any repair.

How much does an Alfa Romeo service cost?

An Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 minor service costs about AED 1,140 and a major service about AED 2,340 as a guide, based on UK specialist Alfaworkshop's prices converted from pounds. Send us your model and mileage for a written Dubai quote.

How much does an Alfa Romeo MultiAir unit replacement cost?

A MultiAir unit replacement on a 2.0 Giulia costs about AED 10,180 as a guide, based on Alfaworkshop UK prices converted from pounds. Caught early, an oil and filter change to the correct spec, about AED 985, and a unit test are often all it needs.

What does "Service brake system" mean on a Giulia or Stelvio?

It means the electronic brake system has logged a fault. Several recalls cover the brakes on these cars, so check your VIN for open campaigns first. Out of recall, we scan the brake module and inspect the rear actuator wiring, a known weak point, before quoting.

Which gearbox does the Alfa Romeo Giulia use?

The Giulia and Stelvio use a ZF 8 speed automatic, not the TCT dual clutch fitted to the Giulietta, MiTo and 4C. The two are diagnosed differently, so we read the gearbox codes and check the fluid before quoting any repair.

Do you repair the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio?

Yes. The Quadrifoglio uses a 2.9 litre twin turbo V6, and a major service costs about AED 8,600 as a guide, based on Alfaworkshop UK prices. Coolant leaks are reported on early cars, so we check warranty status first.

Do you work on the Alfa Romeo Tonale?

Yes, out of warranty. Most Tonales in Dubai are still under factory warranty, so covered faults go to Gargash first. We handle servicing, tyres, brakes and faults the warranty does not cover, with a written quote first.
