Three generations of AMG V8
Each AMG V8 has its own weak spot
AMG V8s are hand built in Affalterbach under the one man, one engine principle, yet each generation has a known weak spot. Knowing the generation tells us where to look first. It is the difference between a quick, cheap fix and a guessed engine rebuild.
About 2006 to 2015
6.2 V8
M156, naturally aspirated
Cars from about 2007 to 2011 can suffer cylinder head bolt failure, which lets coolant into the combustion chamber. Early engines also wore camshaft lobes and lifters, which Mercedes acknowledged in a 2009 service bulletin.
Watch for: white smoke, rough idle, coolant loss, clatter on start up.
About 2011 to 2018
5.5 biturbo
M157, twin turbo
Known for a rattle just after start up from the camshaft adjusters and chain tensioners. Oil can also leak from camshaft solenoids and wick up the wiring harness into control modules.
Watch for: rattle for a few seconds on start, oil around solenoids, warning lights.
About 2015 on
4.0 biturbo
M177 and M178, hot V turbos
A strong engine, but the turbos sit inside the V where heat builds. Turbo oil feed lines should be checked for seepage, and some G 63s show above normal oil use, with bore scoring the worst case at high mileage.
Watch for: oil level dropping between services, oil seepage near the turbos.
A G-Class in our workshop. The G 63 shares its body and most of its checks.
G 63 owners
The G 63 is Dubai's favourite AMG
The G-Class is the most listed Mercedes in Dubai, and many are G 63s. On the 2019 on model with the 4.0 biturbo, the three things owners report most are oil use, jerky Speedshift gear changes and sagging heavy doors.
Each has a clear check. We measure oil use over a set distance, read gearbox adaptation data, and inspect the door hinges before anything gets replaced.
Modern AMG V8s put the turbos inside the V for quick response. In Dubai summer traffic, that area runs extremely hot, so these four checks matter more here than almost anywhere.
Turbos
Oil feed lines
Small seeps at the turbo oil lines can starve the turbo bearings. We check them at every service.
Cooling
Radiators and pumps
AMGs use several radiators and coolant circuits. Weak pumps or blocked fins show up first in July.
Oil
The right grade, on time
High heat breaks oil down faster. We use the Mercedes approved oil for your engine and follow the time limit.
Intercoolers
Charge air system
Leaks or heat soak in the intercoolers rob power. We pressure test the charge air system on request.
Big brakes and wide tyres wear fast. We measure, we do not guess.
Brakes, tyres and gearboxes
AMG performance parts wear like performance parts
AMG brakes, tyres and gearboxes are built for big power, and they wear faster than on a normal Mercedes. Knowing exactly how much life is left saves you from replacing parts early, or too late.
Carbon ceramic discs in particular are expensive, so we measure their wear properly rather than replacing them on looks alone.
Brake pads and discs
Measured on steel and carbon ceramic setups.
Brake fluid
Heat ages it fast, especially after track days.
Tyres and alignment
Wide tyres wear unevenly if alignment drifts.
Speedshift gearbox
Scan, adaptation data and a road test.
Tuned or modified AMG?
A tuned AMG means more checks
Some AMGs in Dubai have been remapped or modified. That is fine, as long as the cooling, brakes and gearbox can keep up. Remaps can also affect warranty cover, so check your terms first.
Tell us what has been done, and we check the parts that take the extra strain before they fail.
Gargash Enterprises sells and services Mercedes-AMG in Dubai. Some work belongs there. Out of cover, an independent workshop gives you choice and a written quote.
Under warranty
Use the dealer
Gargash lists certified AMGs with up to 5 years of warranty and service. Warranty claims and recalls go to the dealer.
Tuned cars
Check your cover
A remap can affect warranty claims on the engine and gearbox. Read your terms before modifying a covered car.
Mechanics, Al Quoz
Out of cover
Engine health checks, cooling, turbos, brakes, gearbox and pre-purchase inspections, all with a written quote first.
On an older 63, the engine check is the whole story.
Buying a used AMG?
Check a used AMG engine before you pay
A used E 63 or C 63 can look like a bargain in Dubai. A hidden head bolt or camshaft problem can cost more than the car is worth, so the engine check comes first.
Cold start
Listen for clatter or rattle in the first seconds.
We do not price from third party guides. Your real price comes from a free inspection and a written, itemised quote, with genuine and quality aftermarket parts priced side by side where both exist.

It depends on the engine. The 6.2 M156 is known for head bolt failure and camshaft and lifter wear, the 5.5 M157 for a rattle after start up, and the 4.0 M177 for turbo oil line seepage and, on some G 63s, above normal oil use.
What are the signs of M156 head bolt failure?
White smoke, a rough idle and coolant loss with no visible leak, because coolant gets into the combustion chamber. An overnight cooling system pressure test helps confirm it.
Why does my AMG rattle on start up?
On the 5.5 M157, a rattle for a few seconds after start up usually comes from the camshaft adjusters or chain tensioners. On the older 6.2 M156, clatter on start up can mean camshaft and lifter wear. Both should be checked early.
Why is my G 63 using oil?
The 4.0 biturbo M177 in the 2019 on G 63 is documented for above normal oil use. Causes range from external leaks to ring and bore wear in the worst cases. We measure consumption properly before quoting.
Why does my AMG Speedshift gearbox jerk?
Harsh or jerky shifts on 9G and Speedshift gearboxes often improve after a scan and an adaptation reset. We read the gearbox data before suggesting any parts.
How much does AMG repair cost in Dubai?
AMG repair costs in Dubai vary widely by engine and fault. A G 63 oil consumption repair can be anything from a simple leak fix to engine work, depending on the cause. We test first and give you a written quote.
Can you service a tuned AMG?
Yes. Tell us what has been done and we check the cooling, turbos, gearbox and brakes that take the extra strain. Remaps can affect warranty cover, so check your terms first.
Do you repair the AMG GT?
Yes, including the GT, GT S, GT C, GT R, Black Series and the four door GT 43, 53 and 63. High voltage work on the E Performance hybrid goes to the dealer.
Can you inspect a used AMG before I buy it?
Yes. We listen to the cold start, pressure test the cooling system, check oil use and turbo lines, look for signs of tuning, scan and road test the gearbox, then send a report with photos.
Where can I get my Mercedes-AMG repaired in Dubai outside the dealer?
Mechanics in Al Quoz is an independent Mercedes-AMG workshop for engine health checks on M156, M157 and M177 V8s, cooling, turbo oil lines, Speedshift gearboxes, brakes and pre-purchase inspections on the G 63, C 63, E 63 and AMG GT. You get a free inspection and a written quote first. Warranty and recall work stays with Gargash Enterprises, the official dealer in Dubai.
Which engine is in my G 63?
A G 63 from 2012 to 2018 uses the 5.5 litre M157 biturbo V8, and the 2019 on model uses the 4.0 litre M177 biturbo V8 with its turbos inside the V. We confirm the exact engine from the VIN before quoting any work.
Why does my AMG run hot or lose power in Dubai summer?
Modern AMG V8s put the turbos inside the V, so heat builds fast in summer traffic. Weak coolant pumps, blocked radiator fins, intercooler heat soak or seeping turbo oil lines are the usual causes, so we check the cooling and charge air systems before replacing parts.
