No start or stalling
Check battery condition, ECU power feeds and grounds, start authorization, engine-speed signals and the relevant fuel or ignition system.
No start, stalling or an engine warning light? Find out whether the fault is in the ECU, its wiring or another component before paying for a replacement. We test the problem, explain the repair options and quote the work first.
Vehicle-specific guide. Diagnosis, programming and replacement are priced separately below.

ECU, ECM and engine computer often describe the engine controller. Some vehicles use a PCM for combined powertrain control. A warning light alone does not identify which part has failed. Our computer diagnostics service is the starting point when the cause is still unknown.
Check battery condition, ECU power feeds and grounds, start authorization, engine-speed signals and the relevant fuel or ignition system.
Check the diagnostic connection, fuses, relays, wiring and network faults. A module that cannot be reached is not automatically a failed module.
Compare fault codes and live data with ignition, fuel, air and mechanical checks. A sensor code can describe a circuit problem rather than a defective ECU.
Inspect affected connectors and wiring, and investigate voltage or moisture damage. Correct the original cause before reconnecting a repaired or replacement unit.
If the car repeatedly stalls, overheats or runs with a severe misfire Stop in a safe place and call for advice about recovery. Do not keep restarting a water-damaged car or attempt another software flash to see whether it clears the fault.
The price changes with the vehicle, module number, damage and required software work. These published examples help you compare the different jobs without confusing a scan fee with a repair price.
Share the model, year, engine and symptoms. We confirm the diagnostic charge, then explain whether the next step is wiring repair, ECU repair, programming or replacement.
Ask whether the test charge remains separate or is credited against approved repair work. No automatic deduction is promised.
Per vehicle. Published diagnostic scan estimates, with further circuit or bench testing agreed separately.
Published example for repair of the existing Audi unit. The actual fault and repairability determine the quote.
Published software-work example. Confirm the exact procedure, access requirements and included setup.
Published replacement example. Confirm the unit type, fitting, coding and final checks in the written quote.
The best option depends on the defect, recoverable data and the cost of returning the car to working condition.

A localized internal fault may be repairable when the circuit board and required data remain usable. The repair addresses the confirmed defect, followed by testing. It does not make every component new or remove the need to fix an external short or leak.
Software work can be appropriate when a relevant update or setup procedure applies. It cannot repair a burned circuit, damaged connector or missing power supply. Confirm the vehicle and software requirements before starting.
Consider a new, remanufactured or suitable used unit when repair is unsuitable or uneconomical. Compare the complete fitted and configured cost, availability and warranty terms. A matching case or connector alone does not prove compatibility.
Looking for DME repair? DME is the engine-management terminology used on some vehicles, including BMW. See our DME repair service for that specific inquiry. Bring the VIN and module identification so we can check the correct system.
Repair programming restores or updates the vehicle’s required operation. A performance remap deliberately changes calibration targets and needs a separate suitability discussion.
Writes the appropriate software or calibration to a supported controller. The procedure needs the correct vehicle identification, supported access and stable power throughout.
Configures supported vehicle options or completes the learning and setup procedures needed after particular repairs. The required steps depend on the system, not just the label on the service.
A compatible replacement may require transfer of recoverable original data or an authorized matching procedure. Not every used or locked unit is reusable, and a damaged ECU may not yield usable data.
A GM bulletin for certain 2018 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles links specific knock-sensor codes to a software issue, with the prescribed work depending on vehicle identification. It shows why a code alone is not a parts order. This example is not a diagnosis for your car.

Do not buy a used ECU or remove the original unit until compatibility and the testing plan have been confirmed.
ECU remapping adjusts calibration targets such as torque delivery, fueling or ignition on supported vehicles. It is a separate service from repairing an ECU fault.
Existing guide range from our tuning article. Suitability, current pricing, included checks and the total with VAT must be confirmed for your model. Hardware upgrades are separate.
Discuss throttle response, torque delivery and the intended use. Diagnose warning lights, misfires, cooling problems and drivetrain concerns first. A remap is not a repair for an existing mechanical or electrical fault.
Confirm model support, required fuel, existing modifications, the original software backup where possible and how the result will be checked. Increased output can increase mechanical and thermal loads. No universal power gain, fuel saving or longer engine life is promised.
Before modifying the car, confirm applicable licensing and inspection requirements with the relevant authority and discuss the change with your insurer and warranty provider. A tune is not automatically approved for road use or covered by an existing warranty.
Follow the agreed fuel and servicing requirements, monitor cooling and drivability, and report new faults promptly. Tell future repairers that the software has been changed. Suspension, exhaust and hardware upgrades require their own assessment and quotation.
Share when it happens, any scan report and recent work. Preserve fault information rather than repeatedly clearing codes.
Check relevant circuits, data and communication. Bench assessment is arranged when needed and supported for the unit.
Review the findings, repair or replacement option, additional programming and total price before work proceeds.
Recheck communication and relevant faults, complete applicable setup and confirm the original symptom under suitable test conditions.
There is no single turnaround for ECU work. A supported software procedure and a damaged board requiring components are different jobs. We confirm the expected completion after diagnosis, access checks and parts availability. Tell us if the vehicle is immobilized so collection arrangements can be discussed.
Want to understand the system first? Read our guide to the engine control unit. This service page covers the testing, repair choices and quotation.
Understand the test, the unit and the quote before approving the work.
Sometimes. A localized circuit fault may be repairable when the board, components and required data can be recovered. Extensive corrosion, burn damage or unusable data may make replacement more practical. The decision follows testing and a comparison of the complete costs.
Published Audi examples are AED 1,000–2,000 for ECU repair, AED 800–1,600 for reprogramming and AED 2,000–4,000 for replacement. Other vehicles require a specific quote. Confirm diagnostic charges, fitting, setup, parts and the final total including VAT.
No. The code identifies a detected condition. Wiring, low voltage, a sensor, an actuator, network communication or software can be involved. Tests must support an ECU repair or replacement recommendation.
Start by sharing the vehicle details and symptoms. Bringing the car allows checks of the power supply, wiring, communication and starting system. A loose ECU is useful only when the workshop has agreed what can be tested without the vehicle.
That depends on the exact hardware, software, security system and available data. Some units cannot be reused through the supported procedure. Confirm compatibility and the full setup cost before buying a donor unit.
No. Clearing codes removes stored fault information where supported; it does not repair the cause or install a software update. Programming writes software, while coding and adaptation perform different setup tasks.
Coverage depends on the vehicle’s warranty terms and the work performed. Ask your warranty provider before authorizing changes. Also ask Mechanics to put any offered repair or replacement warranty and exclusions in the written quotation. There is no blanket guarantee that tuning preserves coverage.
The symptom matters more than the suspected component. Repeated stalling, severe misfire, overheating or sudden loss of power needs a safe stop and advice about recovery. For a steady warning light without those symptoms, call with the details so the next step can be assessed.
