Quick answer

How much does car diagnostics cost in Dubai, and where can I get it done?

An initial car diagnostic scan in Dubai costs about AED 100 to 400 as a guide, depending on the make. Mechanics in Al Quoz, Dubai reads the engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag and body modules in about 30 to 60 minutes, explains each code and tests the cause before quoting. Warranty faults go to the UAE dealer.

Reading a fault code

What a check engine code like P0301 means

Every standard fault code has five characters. Each one narrows down where the car saw a problem, but none of them names the part to buy.

P

The system

P for powertrain, C for chassis, B for body and U for the network that links the modules.

0

Generic or maker code

0 means a standard code shared by all makes. 1 usually means a code defined by the manufacturer.

3

The subsystem

On powertrain codes, 3 points to ignition and misfire. Other digits cover fuel and air, emissions, idle and gearbox.

01

The exact fault

Here, a misfire detected on cylinder 1. P0300 would mean random misfires across several cylinders.

Code status

PendingThe car saw the fault once and is waiting to confirm it.

Stored or confirmedThe fault repeated and the warning light is usually on.

PermanentOnly the car clears it, after its own checks prove the fault has gone.

Code structure as described in the on-board diagnostics reference, checked 16 October 2026.

Code read vs diagnosis

From a quick code read to a confirmed diagnosis

A basic handheld code reader and a workshop diagnosis are not the same job. Each layer below adds evidence, and only the last one tells you which part, if any, to replace.

01

Engine code read

A basic reader shows emissions related engine codes only.

Misses ABS, airbag, gearbox and body faults completely.
02

Full module scan

Every control unit the equipment supports is read, with code status and freeze frame data.

This is the initial scan priced at AED 100 to 400.
03

Live data review

Sensor readings are watched while the engine runs, warms up or drives.

Shows whether a reading is wrong, slow or dropping out.
04

Physical confirmation

Meter tests on supply, ground and signal, plus pressure, smoke or mechanical checks where needed.

Agreed and priced before it starts, then the repair is quoted.
Systems we scan

Which car systems a diagnostic scan covers

Modern cars have many control units talking over a shared network. We confirm which ones our equipment reads on your model before booking.

Engine management

For the check engine light, rough idle, hesitation, high fuel use or reduced power.

  • Misfire, fuel trim, air flow and oxygen sensor codes
  • Freeze frame data from the moment the fault was stored
  • Readiness status of the car's own self tests

Gearbox electronics

For harsh or late shifts, a gearbox warning or a car stuck in one gear.

  • Solenoid, pressure and speed sensor codes
  • Fluid temperature and shift data
  • Electronic results guide the check but cannot show internal wear

ABS and stability control

For the ABS, traction or stability light, often after kerb strikes or wheel work.

  • Wheel speed sensor and ring faults
  • Pump, valve and steering angle codes
  • Always paired with a physical brake check

Airbags and restraints

For an airbag light, often after seat removal, accident repair or a flat battery.

  • Seat connector and belt pretensioner circuits
  • Clock spring and crash sensor codes
  • Erasing the light never repairs the fault

Body and comfort electronics

For windows, locks, lights, mirrors or a key that is not recognised.

  • Body control module and door module codes
  • Lighting circuit and bulb monitoring faults
  • Complex electrical faults move to our car electrical repair team

Network communication

For several warnings at once, or a module that does not answer the scan.

  • U codes for lost communication between modules
  • Low voltage events after a flat or weak battery
  • Power and ground checked before any module is blamed

The 16 pin socket under the dashboard is where every scan starts.
Dashboard warning lights

Dashboard warning lights by urgency

Most cars use red for stop, amber for check soon and green or blue for information. Your handbook has the exact symbols, and the behaviour of the light matters as much as its colour.

Hand pressing a push start button with several dashboard warning lights showing
Note the colour and whether the light is steady or flashing.

Stop safely now

Driving on can damage the engine or affect control of the car.

  • Oil pressure warning
  • Coolant temperature in the red
  • Flashing check engine with shaking
  • Brake warning with a soft pedal

Book a scan this week

The car may feel fine, but the fault is stored and can get worse.

  • Steady check engine light
  • ABS or stability light
  • Airbag light
  • Gearbox or reduced power warning

Check at the next visit

Usually a reminder or a minor fault, but still worth reading.

  • Service due reminder
  • Tyre pressure light after topping up
  • Washer fluid or bulb warning
  • A light that came on once and cleared

After the scan

Find the cause before buying parts

A fault code tells us what the car detected, not why. The next test separates a failed part from its wiring, its power supply or the condition it is measuring.

Depending on the code, that can be a power and ground check, a connector inspection, live data compared with known good values, or a mechanical test. If the engine itself is at fault, the next quote comes from engine repair. A car that will not start may need battery and starting checks before a useful scan is possible.

Technicians using electrical test equipment and a laptop at an open engine bay
Meter and live data tests decide between a part, its wiring and the condition it measures.

If the scan shows this, the next step is

No code, but the symptom is still there
Investigate the symptom itself. Many mechanical faults never set a code.
A module does not answer
Check compatibility, power, ground and network wiring before calling the module faulty.
An old code from earlier work
Compare it with today's complaint and the repair records before replacing anything.
The code returns after clearing
Find the cause with a test plan. Clearing again and again is not a repair.
Several codes after a flat battery
Charge and test the battery, clear, then rescan. Many low voltage codes do not return.
One code, three causes

Why a sensor code does not always mean a new sensor

Take an oxygen sensor code. The sensor reports what it measures, so a wrong reading can come from three places. Testing tells them apart.

Oxygen sensor with its four pin connector and socket laid on a workbench
A sensor code can point to the sensor, its connector or the engine condition it reads.
O2 sensor circuit code

The sensor itself

Slow or stuck readings in live data with good wiring and a healthy engine. Here a new sensor is the right repair, see sensor replacement.

The connector or wiring

Heat near the exhaust can harden connectors and crack insulation. A meter test on the circuit finds it, and a wiring repair can cost less than a part.

The condition it measures

An air leak, a misfire or a fuel problem makes a good sensor report a bad mixture. Replacing the sensor would leave the real fault in place.

The same logic applies to temperature, pressure and speed sensors. We show you the test result before you approve a part.

Your diagnostic report

What your car diagnostic report shows

You should leave with something you can act on, not a list of unexplained codes. Agree a printout, digital copy or WhatsApp summary when you book.

Technician reviewing a diagnostic display inside a car
The findings are explained before any repair is approved.
  1. Vehicle and complaint

The car, its mileage and the warning or symptom you reported.

  2. Systems read

Modules scanned, plus any that did not answer or are not supported.

  3. Codes and status

Each code with its description and whether it is pending, stored or permanent.

  4. Data and tests

The live readings and physical tests actually carried out.

  5. Findings and limits

What the evidence proves, what is still suspected and whether the symptom showed up.

  6. Next step and quote

The next test or the repair, with a separate written estimate.

Keep the first scan and the post repair scan together. They show the fault was fixed, which helps if the light ever comes back or when you sell the car.

When to stop driving and ask about recovery

Stop somewhere safe and follow the handbook. Do not keep driving to make a fault appear, and do not road test a car that feels unsafe.

If the car has been through deep water, do not restart it for a scan. Tell us about the water before any recovery or powered testing, and see our flooded car repair page.

  • Flashing check engine light with heavy shaking
  • Oil pressure warning, or temperature gauge in the red
  • Brake warning with a soft or long pedal
  • Steering that suddenly turns heavy
  • Burning smell, smoke or hot wiring

Before you book

Car diagnostics questions answered

Cost, timing, flashing lights, code readers and what happens after the scan, answered first.

Cost and time

How much does a car diagnostic test cost in Dubai?

An initial diagnostic scan at Mechanics in Al Quoz costs about AED 100 to 400 per car as a guide. Toyota, Hyundai and Kia start around AED 100 to 200, while Land Rover, Porsche and Jaguar sit at about AED 300 to 400. The price for your car is confirmed before the scan.

How long does a car diagnostic check take?

A routine initial scan takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes once the car is with the technician. Faults that come and go, a car that will not start or extra testing can take longer, and a cold start complaint may need the car overnight. We confirm timing when you book.

Will I get a written diagnostic report?

Yes. You receive the codes found, the systems read, any systems that could not be reached, the tests carried out and the recommended next step. Agree whether you want a printout, a digital copy or a WhatsApp summary when you book.

Warning lights

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady check engine light with the car driving normally usually allows a gentle drive to the workshop, but book a scan soon. A flashing light, heavy shaking, overheating or low oil pressure means stop safely and arrange recovery instead of driving on.

What does a flashing check engine light mean?

A flashing check engine light usually means a misfire strong enough to overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, stop somewhere safe and avoid hard acceleration. The scan then reads which cylinder is misfiring, and testing finds whether ignition, fuel or mechanical wear is the cause.

Will clearing the fault code fix the check engine light?

No. Clearing a code only switches the light off until the car detects the fault again, often within a few drives. It also erases freeze frame data that helps diagnosis. We read and record everything first, fix the cause, then clear and recheck.

The scan

Does a diagnostic scan tell me exactly what is wrong?

No, a scan tells you which system reported a fault and under what conditions. A code naming a sensor can be caused by the sensor, its wiring or the condition it measures. Live data and physical tests confirm the real cause before any part is quoted.

Why does my own code reader show no faults?

Basic readers usually see only the engine emissions codes. The fault may sit in the ABS, airbag, gearbox or body modules, may be intermittent, or may be mechanical with no code at all. Tell us what your reader checked and what the car is doing.

Can you scan BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover and Toyota models?

Yes, Mechanics handles diagnostic work on these makes and most others seen on Dubai roads. Coverage of every module depends on the exact model, year and security access, so send the details first and we confirm which systems our equipment reads for your car.

Can you check a hybrid or electric car?

Ask before you book. Reading the codes is often possible, but high voltage testing needs the right equipment and training for that model. A general scan is not a traction battery health report, so we confirm what we can check for your exact car first.

Where to go

Does a diagnostic scan count as the RTA test?

No. A workshop diagnostic scan is a fault finding service and does not produce an RTA certificate. The official roadworthiness test is done at RTA approved test centres. A scan before the test can still help you find warning light faults early.

Where can I get car diagnostics in Dubai outside the dealer?

Mechanics in Al Quoz, Dubai is an independent workshop that scans and diagnoses most makes, from Toyota and Nissan to BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover. The scan price is confirmed first and repairs are quoted in writing. Warranty and recall work goes to the official UAE dealer.
