What does steering repair cost?

A worn tie rod, hydraulic leak and failed electric rack need different work. These Dubai market starting guides help with planning. They are not fixed Mechanics offers, typical averages or a limit on your repair bill.

WorkIndicative starting budget including 5% VATCompare the same work
Hydraulic fluid changeAround AED 160 onwards per vehicleCorrect-specification fluid replacement. Leak repairs and a replacement reservoir, hose or pump are extra.
Outer tie rod end replacementAround AED 370 onwards per endA compatible outer end and fitting allowance. Inner rods, other joints and wheel alignment are itemised separately.
Hydraulic pump repairAround AED 475 onwards per pumpA repairable conventional pump. A new assembly, drive components, hoses and additional fluid work can change the total.

Choose the work your car needs

A smaller repair or a replacement unit?

The useful choice is the repair that addresses the confirmed fault. Compare the complete installed price and conditions, not just the cost of a loose part.

Repair the affected part

When the rest remains serviceable

A hose leak, worn tie rod or damaged boot does not automatically mean a complete rack is needed. Identify the component and check related wear.

  • Replace worn joints rather than disguising play with adjustment
  • Use suitable hoses and seals where a repair is supported
  • Check whether alignment or fresh fluid is required

Rebuild or replace the rack

Compare condition and total cost

A rebuild is worth considering when the assembly can be restored with suitable parts. Scored internals, damaged housings or unsupported electric components may favour replacement.

  • Compare new and properly remanufactured assemblies
  • Include removal, fitting and necessary commissioning
  • Confirm core-return charges and written warranty

Diagnose electrical assistance

For EPS or warning messages

A warning may involve the power supply, wiring, sensors or steering unit. A scan is a starting point rather than proof that the rack must be replaced.

  • Check relevant fault codes and live data
  • Test supply and connections when indicated
  • Calibrate only when the specified procedure applies
Describe what happens

Which steering symptom needs checking?

You do not need to name the failed part to book an assessment. Describe what changes, when it started and whether the vehicle can be moved safely.

Outer tie rod end and dust boot.

If movement is traced to a worn joint, our tie rod replacement service explains the component work. Tyre balance, suspension condition and brake drag can also affect how the wheel feels.

Heavy or uneven assistanceTell us whether it happens only when parking, in one direction or after the car warms up. Hydraulic supply, mechanical resistance and EPS faults need different checks.
Play, knocking or poor returnMovement at joints, rack mounts or the column can affect response. An off-centre wheel or poor return can also involve geometry. The symptom alone does not identify a failed rack.
Vibration or pullingNote whether vibration changes with road speed, braking or turning. Check tyre pressures and report recent kerb impacts or wheel work. Alignment cannot remove wear from a loose joint.
A steering warning or fluid lossSend the exact dashboard message. Our steering malfunction service covers warning-led assessment. A puddle must be identified rather than assumed to be steering fluid.

If steering suddenly becomes very heavy, binds, responds unpredictably or cannot be controlled confidently, stop safely and arrange suitable recovery. Do not test a loss of control on the road. Follow the vehicle handbook and call before attempting to drive to the workshop.

Evidence before replacement

What the inspection establishes

The diagnosis should separate worn steering parts from tyre, suspension, brake or electrical problems that feel similar from the driver’s seat.

Mechanical conditionThe relevant joints, bellows, mounts, shaft connections and column are checked for damage and abnormal movement. A broken boot can let contamination in, but the condition of the joint determines the repair.
Hydraulic performanceWhere fitted, inspect the fluid specification and level, hoses, connections and leak source. Pressure or flow testing is considered when it is needed to distinguish supply problems from internal resistance.
Electronic behaviourRelevant fault codes, assistance data, supply voltage and connections help narrow an EPS fault. Codes do not automatically prove a motor or module has failed.
Geometry and safe verificationCheck alignment when indicated, with the steering wheel correctly centred. Use the applicable initialisation or calibration after repairs, and verify the result when it is safe to do so.

Tell us if the problem followed a battery issue, wheel alignment, accident, flood exposure or previous steering repair. These details help select useful tests without assuming every warning has the same cause.

Hydraulic and electric steering need different work

Hydraulic steering uses fluid pressure to assist movement. Fully electric power steering uses a motor and has no hydraulic steering fluid service. Electro-hydraulic steering still has fluid, even though its pump is electrically driven.

Use the specified fluidFluid type and service requirements come from the vehicle manufacturer. Do not mix fluids or assume every car needs an annual flush. A top-up does not repair a leak.
Replace compatible componentsRack ratio, mountings, connectors, sensors and software requirements can differ within one model year. The VIN and existing part number help confirm compatibility.
Check column and steering-box faults separatelySome vehicles use a steering box rather than a rack. Column joints, intermediate shafts, bearings and steering-lock faults require their own assessment. Cosmetic wheel wear is a different job.

Parts, alignment and the finished repair

Ask which manufacturer and part number are quoted. A genuine part carries the vehicle manufacturer’s branding. OEM or aftermarket labels alone do not establish compatibility or equivalent quality.

New or remanufactured

A compatible new unit and a properly remanufactured assembly can have different prices, availability and warranty terms. Check what was renewed and how the remanufactured unit was tested. Used units carry a separate condition and history question.

Necessary finishing work

Rack or tie rod replacement normally needs a geometry check. Pump or fluid work does not automatically require alignment. Calibration, coding or steering-angle initialisation applies only where the vehicle procedure calls for it.

An itemised quotation

Compare parts, fitting, fluid, seals, alignment, programming and tax together. Ask about a refundable core deposit, additional damaged parts and warranty conditions. A lower parts-only price is not a complete fitted comparison.

A maintenance check can spot visible leaks and damaged boots, but there is no universal steering-component replacement interval. Follow the vehicle schedule and have new symptoms assessed. Avoid holding hydraulic steering against full lock longer than necessary.

From enquiry to collection

Plan your workshop visit

Call Mechanics in Al Quoz, Dubai with your model, year and symptom. You can share a warning photo or an existing written diagnosis before arrival.

01

Share the details

Explain whether the issue happens cold, warm, while parking or at speed. Mention unusual noises, fluid loss and whether the car can be controlled safely.

02

Review the finding

Agree any paid testing, then compare the repair choices, selected parts and itemised total. Ask how the finding supports the recommendation.

03

Confirm the timing

A straightforward job may fit within a working day with parts available. Rebuilds, ordered assemblies or extended diagnosis can take longer. Confirm the collection plan.

04

Keep the repair record

Collect the invoice, parts details and written warranty terms. Ask about completed alignment or calibration and report new warnings, leaks or changes in effort.

Talk to the workshop
How much does steering repair cost in Dubai?

Indicative Dubai starting budgets including 5% VAT are about AED 160 for a hydraulic fluid change, AED 370 for one outer tie rod end, AED 475 for a repairable hydraulic pump, AED 630 for a repairable rack and AED 1,260 for rack replacement. These are market starting guides, not confirmed Mechanics prices or maximum totals. Parts, fitting, alignment and programming must be itemised for your car.

Can my steering rack be repaired instead of replaced?

Sometimes. Suitable seals or repair parts and a serviceable housing may allow repair. Internal damage, corrosion, excessive wear or a fault in an integrated electric unit can require replacement. Compare the complete fitted totals and written warranty for the available routes. A fluid leak alone does not prove the rack is beyond repair.

Can wheel alignment fix heavy or loose steering?

Alignment can correct wheel geometry when the components are serviceable. It cannot repair a leaking hydraulic system, worn joint or electrical assistance fault. Inspect the cause before adjusting alignment. Rack or tie rod work normally needs a geometry check afterwards.

Is it safe to drive with a steering warning?

Follow the vehicle handbook and the actual symptoms. If the wheel suddenly becomes very heavy, steering binds, response is unreliable or you cannot confidently control direction, stop safely and arrange recovery. A warning alone does not identify the failed component. Contact the workshop with the exact message before continuing.

Does electric power steering need a fluid change?

A fully electric power steering system uses motor assistance and has no hydraulic steering fluid to change. An electro-hydraulic system still uses fluid even though its pump is electrically driven. Identify the fitted system and follow its manufacturer instructions rather than applying one fluid schedule to every car.

How long does steering repair take?

A straightforward fluid service, tie rod job or supported calibration may fit within a working day when the vehicle and parts allow it. Rack removal, rebuilding, ordered parts or extended electrical diagnosis can take longer. Mechanics confirms the expected completion after checking the car and availability. No same-day result is guaranteed.

Will a reset repair an EPS warning?

Only an appropriate initialisation or calibration can resolve a fault that actually requires that procedure. A damaged component, poor power supply or wiring problem needs its own repair. Clearing fault codes without correcting the cause does not establish that the steering is safe.

What warranty applies to steering work?

Ask Mechanics for the written terms covering the chosen component and labour before approving work. Check the time or mileage limit, exclusions, required follow-up and claim process. New, remanufactured and used assemblies can have different conditions. No single blanket warranty is promised on this page.
