In this guide
Car air suspension problems usually show as a car sitting low overnight, one corner lower than the rest, a compressor that runs too long or a suspension warning message. The cause is most often a leaking air spring, a cracked air line, a leaking valve block, a tired compressor or a faulty height sensor. Dubai heat ages the rubber faster, so early checks keep the repair smaller.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. Air suspension faults are a regular job for us on luxury saloons and large SUVs.
Use it to understand what your car is telling you. Then let a technician confirm the cause before any part is ordered.
Is it safe to drive with an air suspension problem?
Never work or reach under a car that is held up only by its air suspension. Air springs can drop without warning. Many cars also have a jack mode that stops the system moving while the car is lifted, and workshops use it with proper stands.
| What you notice | Risk level | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Car slightly low in the morning, rises after start | Low | Book a leak check soon |
| Compressor runs often or for a long time | Medium | Book a check before the compressor burns out |
| Suspension warning message, height still normal | Medium | Drive gently and have the system scanned |
| One corner clearly low and not rising | High | Drive slowly to the workshop only if the tyre is clear of the body |
| Vehicle too low message or stop warning | High | Stop safely and call us before driving on |
| Tyre rubbing the arch or car on the bump stops | High | Do not drive, arrange recovery |
Car sitting low or showing a suspension warning? Send us the model and a photo, and we will tell you whether it is safe to drive in.
How car air suspension works

Air suspension replaces steel coil springs with rubber air springs. A compressor fills them, and a control unit keeps the car at the right height.
- Air springs or bellows at each corner, often built into an air strut
- An electric compressor that makes the air pressure
- An air dryer that removes moisture from that air
- A valve block that sends air to each corner
- Height sensors that report how high each corner sits
- Air lines, and a reservoir on some systems
Air suspension symptoms and what usually causes them
| Symptom | Likely causes | How we confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Car sitting low overnight | Leaking air spring, air line, fitting or valve block | Height check after a rest period, leak spray test |
| One corner low, rest normal | That air spring, its line or its valve | Leak test at that corner, live height data |
| Compressor runs too long | Air leak, weak compressor, blocked dryer | Fill time check, scan, leak test |
| Car will not rise at all | Compressor, relay, fuse or control fault | Scan for codes, power and relay checks |
| Wrong height while driving | Height sensor fault, linkage damage, calibration | Live sensor data compared side to side |
| Harsh, bouncy or floaty ride | Worn damper inside the air strut, low pressure | Road test, damper check, pressure readings |
| Hissing near a wheel | Cracked bellows or loose air line fitting | Leak spray at the bellows and fittings |
| Suspension warning message | Any of the above, stored as a fault code | Full scan of the suspension control unit |
The main causes of air suspension failure
Most faults begin with a small air leak. Our suspension repair checks always start by finding it.
1. Air springs and bellows

The bellows flex every time the wheel moves. Over time the rubber dries, then fine cracks form in the folds.
- Cracks often start where the bellows rolls over the piston
- Sand and dirt in the folds speed up wear
- A slow leak shows as a low corner after parking
- A split bellows can drop the corner quickly
A separate air spring and a complete air strut with its damper are different parts. We check which one your car uses before quoting.
2. The air suspension compressor
Overworked by leaks
A leak makes the compressor run more often and for longer, which heats and wears it.
Worn piston seal
An aged compressor can run but make too little pressure to lift the car.
Relay or fuse
A failed relay can stop the compressor or leave it running. It is a cheap part to test first.
Noisy running
A loud or rattling compressor may have worn internals or loose mounts.
A new compressor fitted to a leaking system can fail early. Find and fix the leak first.
3. The valve block
- Internal seals can leak and let one or more corners drop
- A sticking valve can stop a corner filling or venting
- Moisture from a failed dryer can damage the valves
- Connectors and wiring near the valve block can corrode
A car that drops on several corners together often points to the valve block. A leak test at the block confirms it.
4. Height sensors
| Sensor problem | What you notice |
|---|---|
| Sensor reading drifts | Car sits too high or too low on one corner |
| Bent or broken linkage | Height jumps after a kerb or off road knock |
| Wiring or plug fault | Warning message that comes and goes |
| Lost calibration | Wrong height after other suspension work |
5. Air lines and fittings
Plastic air lines run from the valve block to each corner. Rubbing, heat near the exhaust or a loose fitting can cause a pinhole leak.
- Fittings at the air spring top are a common leak point
- Lines that rub on the body can wear through
- Lines near the exhaust can harden and crack
6. The air dryer
The dryer holds a material that soaks up moisture from the air. When it is saturated, wet air reaches the valves and springs.
- On many cars the dryer is built onto the compressor
- We check it whenever the compressor is tested
Air suspension warning messages explained

Each brand words its messages differently. Most fall into a few groups.
- Suspension fault or suspension inoperative
- Vehicle too low, or a stop warning with it
- Reduced height or height control unavailable
- Off road height not available
- A warning about the compressor or a cooling period
A message that clears after a restart has usually stored a fault code. The code helps us find the cause, so do not ignore it.
Why is my car sitting low overnight?
A car that drops while parked is losing air somewhere. The question is where, and how fast.
Local leak
Usually the air spring, its fitting or the line to that corner.
Shared part
On some systems both sides of an axle share a valve or line.
Central part
Often the valve block or a reservoir leak, or several leaks at once.
We often find that a car that sinks overnight still drives normally for a while. That stage is the cheapest time to repair it.
What you can safely check yourself
- Park on level ground and note how high each corner sits
- Take photos of the wheel arch gaps in the evening and the morning
- Listen for a hiss around the wheels after parking
- Notice how long the compressor runs after you start the car
- Photograph any warning message on the dashboard
- Do not reach or crawl under the car while it sits on air
- Do not use a jack without the right lift points and stands
- Do not keep restarting the car to force the compressor to fill
- Do not drive with a tyre touching the arch
How Mechanics diagnoses air suspension faults
-
Listen to you
Which corner drops, how fast, and whether it happens parked or while driving.
-
Measure the height
We record each corner on level ground and compare it with the car’s own readings.
-
Scan the system
Fault codes and live height data are read. See our car computer check.
-
Make it safe
Jack mode is set where the car has it, and the car is supported on the lift, never on air alone.
-
Leak test
Leak detector spray goes on the bellows, fittings, lines and valve block to find escaping air.
-
Test the supply
Compressor fill time, relay, fuse and dryer condition are checked.

Common air suspension repairs and what they fix

The right repair depends on the failed part. A full four corner replacement is rarely the first step.
- We replace only what the tests show has failed
- We check the other corners and tell you their condition
- We finish with height calibration where the car needs it
| Repair | Fixes | Usually followed by |
|---|---|---|
| Air spring or bellows replacement | Low corner, hiss, slow leak | Leak test and height check |
| Complete air strut replacement | Leak plus a worn damper | Height calibration and road test |
| Air line or fitting repair | Pinhole leaks, drop on one corner | Leak test |
| Valve block repair or replacement | Several corners dropping, valve faults | Leak test and scan |
| Compressor and dryer replacement | Slow or no lift, overheating | Fill time check, relay check |
| Height sensor replacement | Wrong height, warning messages | Height calibration |

A complete air strut with a damper costs more than a separate air spring.
The car model
Premium cars and adaptive damping systems can sit above the planning range.
Parts choice
Genuine, OEM equivalent and remanufactured parts differ in price and warranty.
Extra work
Calibration, alignment or other damaged parts are listed separately in the quote.
How Dubai heat ages air suspension rubber

Rubber bellows dry out and lose flexibility faster in high heat. The air lines and seals age the same way.
Rubber hardens
Hardened bellows crack sooner, especially on cars parked outdoors.
Grit in the folds
Desert trips leave sand around the bellows, which rubs as they flex.
Lots of movement
Frequent bumps and ramps work the springs and sensor linkages hard.
Heavy use
Full cabins and loaded boots raise the pressure the system must hold.
After desert driving we often find sand packed around the air springs. A wash of the arches and a quick look at the bellows helps.
How to make air suspension last longer
- Fix a slow leak early, before the compressor wears out
- Ask for the bellows and air lines to be checked at every service
- Rinse sand from the wheel arches after desert trips
- Park in the shade or under cover when you can
- Take speed bumps slowly and straight on
Worn dampers also affect ride and control. Our shock absorber replacement page covers those parts.

Car air suspension questions we get asked
What are the signs of air suspension failure?
The common signs are a car sitting low overnight, one corner lower than the others, a compressor that runs for a long time, a hiss near a wheel, a harsh or bouncy ride and a suspension warning message.
Why does my car sink overnight?
It is losing air while parked. The leak is usually in an air spring, an air line fitting or the valve block. A leak test on the lift finds the exact point.
Can I drive with a failed air suspension?
Only gently and for a short distance if the car still sits at a usable height and the tyres are clear of the arches. If it sits on the bump stops or shows a stop warning, arrange recovery.
Is it safe to work under a car on air suspension?
No. Never go under a car held up only by its air suspension, as it can drop without warning. Workshops use jack mode where fitted and support the car on a lift or stands.
What is jack mode on air suspension?
Jack mode is a setting on many cars that stops the system adjusting height while the car is lifted. It protects the parts and the people working on the car. Your handbook explains if your car has it.
Should I replace the compressor if the car is low?
Not before the system is tested. A low car is usually caused by a leak, and a new compressor on a leaking system can wear out early. We confirm the cause first.
What does the air dryer do?
It removes moisture from the air the compressor pumps in. Dry air protects the valve block and air springs. A saturated dryer can slow filling and let moisture damage other parts.
Can a height sensor cause a low corner?
Yes. A faulty or bent height sensor can give a wrong reading, so the system sets that corner too low or too high. Live data on a scan tool shows it.
Does Dubai heat damage air suspension?
Heat dries out the rubber bellows, air lines and seals faster, and it makes the compressor work harder. Sand around the bellows adds wear. Regular checks catch cracks early.
What is the difference between an air spring and an air strut?
An air spring is the rubber bellows that carries the weight. An air strut combines the air spring and the damper in one unit, so it usually costs more to replace.
How much does an air spring cost in Dubai?
Our suspension price section lists air spring replacement at AED 945 to 2,625 per spring including VAT. The final quote depends on the car and what we find.
Can I convert air suspension to coil springs?
Kits exist for some models, but you lose adjustable height and the car may show warnings unless set up correctly. We explain the trade offs for your car before you decide.
