In this guide
The early signs of gearbox trouble are slipping, harsh or late shifts, a delay when you select drive, judder when pulling away, whining noises and a gearbox warning on the dashboard. Many of these start with old fluid, a sensor or a solenoid, and can be repaired for a fraction of the cost of a new gearbox. A proper diagnosis tells you whether a service, a repair, a rebuild or a replacement makes sense for your car.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. Automatic, CVT and dual clutch gearbox faults are a regular part of our workshop week.
Use it to understand what your gearbox is telling you, and what questions to ask before you approve a big repair.
Gearbox warning signs you should not ignore
| Sign | What it often means | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| Engine revs rise but the car does not speed up | Slipping clutches or bands, low fluid pressure | Book now, drive gently |
| Harsh or banging shifts | Old fluid, solenoid or adaptation fault | Book this week |
| Delay when selecting drive or reverse | Low fluid, worn seals, valve body fault | Book this week |
| Judder when pulling away | Dual clutch wear or torque converter shudder | Book this week |
| Whining or humming that changes with speed | Bearing wear or low fluid in a CVT | Book soon |
| Gearbox warning or limp mode | The control unit has detected a fault | Drive slowly to the workshop |

Know your gearbox type

Each type fails in its own way, so the first step is knowing what your car has.
- Conventional automatics with a torque converter, from 6 to 10 speeds
- CVT gearboxes with a belt or chain and no fixed gears
- Dual clutch gearboxes, often called DSG, PDK or DCT
- Automated manuals on some small and older cars
- Manual gearboxes with a clutch pedal
Fluid and solenoids
Old fluid, worn clutch packs and faulty solenoids or valve bodies are the usual causes.
Heat and belt wear
Fluid that overheats in traffic, worn belts and pulley faults cause whine and slip.
Clutch and mechatronic
Stop and go driving wears the clutches and stresses the mechatronic control unit.
Clutch and bearings
A slipping clutch, worn release bearing or hard gear change are most common.
What causes gearbox problems
1. Old, low or wrong fluid
Gearbox fluid cools, lubricates and carries the pressure that makes gear changes happen. In Dubai heat it breaks down faster.
- Many gearboxes are sold as sealed for life, but the fluid still ages
- Low fluid from a leak causes slipping and delayed engagement
- The wrong fluid type can cause harsh shifts and long term damage
- Dark fluid with a burnt smell signals overheating

A fluid service done at the right time is the cheapest gearbox repair there is.
- Correct fluid to the manufacturer specification
- New filter or pan where the gearbox has one
- Level set at the right temperature with a scan tool
- Adaptations reset where the car needs it
2. Solenoids, sensors and the valve body
Modern gearboxes are controlled electronically. Small electrical parts can cause big symptoms.
- A sticking shift solenoid causes harsh or missed changes
- A speed sensor fault can put the car into limp mode
- Wear in the valve body causes flare between gears
- Wiring and connector faults cause warnings that come and go
3. Mechatronic and control unit faults

On dual clutch and many modern automatics, the hydraulics and electronics sit in one mechatronic unit.
- Heat cracks circuit boards and solder joints
- Pressure accumulators and seals can leak inside
- Faults often show as sudden neutral or a flashing gear display
- Repair or exchange units are often possible instead of a new gearbox
4. Mechanical wear
Clutch packs
Friction plates inside an automatic wear and cause slipping.
Torque converter
A worn lock up clutch causes shudder at steady speed.
Bearings
Worn bearings whine or rumble, louder as speed rises.
Dual clutches
The clutch packs wear like a manual clutch and need measuring.
Why gearboxes work harder in Dubai
Fluid ageing
Fluid temperature runs higher, so it breaks down sooner than the booklet assumes.
Constant changes
Stop and go driving means thousands of shifts and clutch engagements every week.
Sand and load
Dune driving and towing put heavy load and heat through the gearbox.
Creeping
Slow creeping over bumps and in car parks is hard on dual clutch gearboxes.
We regularly see gearboxes in Dubai that have never had a fluid change. Many of them still respond well to a correct service if it is done before damage sets in.
What you can safely check yourself
- Note exactly when the problem happens, cold or hot, in traffic or on the highway
- Record a short video with sound when the fault appears
- Photograph any gearbox warning or flashing gear display
- Look under the car for red or brown drips after parking
- Check your service records for the last gearbox fluid change
- Do not keep driving a slipping gearbox at speed
- Do not top up with a fluid that is not specified for your gearbox
- Do not rely on additives sold to cure slipping
- Do not tow a car with a failed gearbox on its wheels

Repair, rebuild or replace?
| Option | Best when | Trade off |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid and filter service | Harsh shifts or early symptoms with no internal damage | Will not fix worn clutches |
| Solenoid or sensor replacement | A specific electrical part is confirmed faulty | Other wear may appear later |
| Valve body or mechatronic repair | Control faults with healthy mechanical parts | Some units need coding and adaptation |
| Gearbox rebuild | Worn clutches or bearings in a gearbox worth saving | Takes longer, needs the gearbox removed |
| Used or exchange gearbox | Severe damage, or a rebuild costs more than the car is worth | History of a used unit can be unknown |
We will tell you honestly when a repair is not worth it. The value of the car, its mileage and how long you plan to keep it all matter.
How much does gearbox repair cost in Dubai?
| Work | Planning budget including 5 percent VAT |
|---|---|
| Gearbox inspection at Mechanics | Free initial inspection |
| Fluid and filter service | AED 262.50 to 630 |
| Solenoid or sensor replacement | AED 420 to 1,260 |
| Valve body or mechatronic repair | AED 2,100 to 5,775 |
| Gearbox rebuild | AED 5,250 to 12,600 |
| Used or exchange gearbox | Quote for your car |
These figures come from our transmission repair price guide. They are planning estimates, and the final quote depends on your gearbox and what we find.
Gearbox type
Large 8 and 10 speed automatics and dual clutch units cost more to rebuild.
Parts
Genuine, OE supplier and rebuilt parts differ in price and warranty.
Labour
Some gearboxes come out easily, others need the subframe dropped.
Programming
New control units and repairs often need coding and adaptation.
What happens if you ignore gearbox symptoms?
| Early fault | If left alone |
|---|---|
| Old fluid and harsh shifts | Clutch packs overheat and wear, leading to slipping |
| Small fluid leak | Low pressure burns clutches and damages the pump |
| Sticking solenoid | Repeated harsh engagement wears internal parts |
| Dual clutch judder | Clutch wear speeds up and the flywheel can be damaged |
A fluid service or solenoid repair is a few hundred dirhams. A rebuild can run into thousands, which is why early checks pay off.
How to make your gearbox last longer
- Change the gearbox fluid at the interval your manufacturer recommends for severe use
- Fix leaks as soon as you see them
- Come to a full stop before switching between drive and reverse
- Avoid holding the car on a hill with the throttle on a dual clutch gearbox
- Let the car warm up gently before hard driving
- Get symptoms checked early, not when the warning light appears
Gearbox faults we see most on different cars
| Car type | Common gearbox | What we see most |
|---|---|---|
| Large SUVs and pickups | 8 and 10 speed automatics | Overheated fluid from towing and desert use, harsh shifts |
| Japanese and Korean family cars | CVT or conventional automatic | CVT whine, judder and slipping from hot fluid |
| Compact cars and small SUVs | Dry or wet dual clutch | Judder in traffic, clutch wear and mechatronic faults |
| Luxury saloons | Advanced 7 to 9 speed automatics | Valve body faults, solenoids and adaptation issues |
| Sports cars | Dual clutch performance gearboxes | Clutch wear, overheating in hard use |
Each brand has its own weak points. Our brand pages, such as Nissan repair and Volkswagen repair, list the faults we see on each model.
Questions to ask before you approve a gearbox repair

A gearbox repair is a big decision. These questions help you compare quotes fairly.
- What fault codes and test results point to this repair?
- Is the gearbox being repaired, rebuilt or replaced?
- Are the parts genuine, OE supplier or rebuilt?
- Does the price include fluid, filters, coding and adaptation?
- What warranty comes with the work?
- Will I see the old parts after the repair?
At Mechanics every gearbox quote lists the parts, labour, fluid and programming separately. You approve it in writing before we start, and we show you what came out of the car.
How often should gearbox fluid be changed in Dubai?
Intervals vary widely by gearbox, and many handbooks list a shorter interval for severe use. Dubai heat, traffic and desert driving usually count as severe use.
| Gearbox type | What we usually advise |
|---|---|
| Conventional automatic | Follow the severe use interval, and check the fluid condition at every major service |
| CVT | Change more often than a normal automatic, as CVT fluid suffers most from heat |
| Wet dual clutch | Change on the schedule in the handbook, often with a filter |
| Dry dual clutch | Check clutch wear values with a scan at each service |
| Manual gearbox | Check for leaks and change the oil at the listed interval |
If you do not know when the fluid was last changed, ask us to check its condition. A sample and a scan tell us whether a service is due.

Gearbox questions we get asked
What are the first signs of gearbox problems?
Common early signs are harsh or late shifts, a delay when selecting drive, judder when pulling away, slipping, whining noises and a gearbox warning light.
How much does gearbox repair cost in Dubai?
As planning figures including VAT, a fluid service is about AED 262.50 to 630, a solenoid or sensor about AED 420 to 1,260, a mechatronic repair about AED 2,100 to 5,775 and a rebuild about AED 5,250 to 12,600.
Is it better to repair or replace a gearbox?
If the fault is a fluid, solenoid or control problem, repair is usually far cheaper. A rebuild or exchange unit makes sense when there is serious internal wear. We explain the options for your car.
Can a fluid change fix a slipping gearbox?
It can help if the fluid is low or badly degraded, but it cannot repair worn clutches. If slipping continues after a correct service, internal repair is likely needed.
Are sealed for life gearboxes really sealed for life?
The fluid still ages, especially in hot climates and heavy traffic. Many manufacturers list a fluid change for severe use, and Dubai driving usually counts.
Why does my car jerk when changing gear?
Old fluid, a sticking solenoid, worn engine or gearbox mounts and incorrect adaptations are common causes. A scan and road test show which one.
What is limp mode?
It is a protection mode where the gearbox holds one gear to prevent damage after a fault. Drive slowly to the workshop and have it scanned.
Why does my dual clutch gearbox judder?
Clutch wear, contamination or adaptation values out of range are the usual causes. Clutch wear can be measured with a scan tool before deciding on repairs.
Can I drive with a gearbox warning light?
Drive gently and only as far as the workshop. Continuing to drive normally can turn a small repair into a rebuild.
How long does a gearbox rebuild take?
Usually several days, depending on parts. A fluid service or solenoid repair is often done the same day. We confirm the time in the quote.
Do you repair CVT gearboxes?
Yes. We service and repair CVT gearboxes, including fluid service, valve body faults and belt or pulley wear, after confirming the cause.
How do I book a gearbox check at Mechanics?
Send the car details and a video of the symptom on WhatsApp. The initial inspection is free and you get a written quote before any work.
