How a windscreen is built and why cracks spread
A front windscreen is laminated glass. Two layers of glass are bonded to a clear plastic interlayer that holds the pieces together when it breaks.

Size is only part of the answer. Where the damage sits and how fresh it is matter just as much.

What causes windscreen cracks in the UAE?
Stones from trucks and highways
Loose gravel thrown up at speed is the most common start of a chip.
Heat shock
Cold AC blowing on hot glass, or cold water on a hot screen, stresses a weak point.
Impacts and body flex
Potholes, kerbs and minor collisions twist the body and load the glass.
Poor previous fitting
A bad bond or wrong glass can create stress points that crack later.
Worn wipers on grit
Dragging sand across the glass scratches it, which is a different problem from a crack.

When does resin windscreen repair work?
A resin repair fills the break in the outer glass layer and cures it hard. It stops the chip spreading and makes it less visible.

Cracked windscreen and the RTA vehicle test
Visibility in the driver’s view is checked in the vehicle test. Damage that blocks or distorts the driver’s view can cause problems at the test, so it is best fixed before your registration renewal.

- Repair chips early so they do not grow into the driver’s view
- Make sure wipers clear the glass without streaks
