In this guide
Light scratches on car glass can often be polished out, but deep scratches that catch your fingernail usually mean the glass or the seal causing them needs replacing. On windscreens, worn wipers and grit leave arcs. On side windows, sand trapped in the door seals scratches the glass each time it moves. Fix the cause first, or the scratches come back.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. We see scratched windscreens and side windows every week, mostly caused by sand and dust.
Use it to judge how bad the damage is, what caused it and which fix makes sense. Then send us a photo for an honest repair or replace answer.
Are scratches on car glass a safety problem?
Scratches in the driver’s line of sight can cause glare at night and in low sun. If headlights or the sun turn the glass into a haze, have it checked before driving at night.
| What you see | Risk level | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fine haze only visible in sunlight | Low | Clean properly, consider polishing |
| Wiper arcs on the windscreen | Medium | Replace wipers, assess polishing |
| Glare at night from headlights | Medium to high | Book a check soon |
| Deep scratch your nail catches | Medium | Polishing may not work, assess replacement |
| Scratch with a chip or crack | High | Book a windscreen check now |
Scratched windscreen or window? Send us a clear photo and the car model, and we will tell you if it can be polished.
Windscreen glass and side window glass are different
Laminated glass
Two layers of glass with a plastic layer between. It holds together when cracked and can be polished with care.
Tempered glass
Toughened glass that shatters into small pieces. Light scratches can be polished, deep ones usually mean replacement.
Special layers
Heat reflective, acoustic or heads up display glass can have coatings that polishing may damage.
Window tint film sits on the inside of side windows. A scratch in the film is not a glass scratch, and the fix is new film, not polishing.
What causes scratches on car glass?

- Worn or hard wiper blades dragging sand across the windscreen
- Grit trapped in the door window seals
- Dry wiping dust off the glass with a cloth or hand
- Scrapers, keys or rings used on the glass
- Automatic car washes with dirty brushes
- Sand blown at speed on desert roads
| Scratch pattern | Likely cause | Fix the cause |
|---|---|---|
| Curved arcs on the windscreen | Wiper blades | New blades, check arm pressure |
| Vertical lines on side windows | Dirty or worn door seals | Clean or replace the seals |
| Random swirls | Dry wiping or car wash brushes | Change the cleaning method |
| Fine pitting across the glass | Sand blast on the road | Assess polishing or replacement |
| Single deep line | A hard object | Assess depth before polishing |
How to judge scratch depth
-
Clean the glass
Wash and dry the area so dirt does not hide or fake a scratch.
-
Look from inside and outside
Check which side the scratch is on. Inside marks may be in tint film.
-
Run your fingernail across it
If the nail glides over, it is light. If it catches, it is deep.
-
Check in sunlight and at night
Note whether it causes glare in the driver’s view.
-
Take a photo
Send it to us with the car model for an assessment.
Repair options for scratched car glass
| Option | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Deep clean and decontamination | Haze and film that looks like scratches | Does not remove true scratches |
| Professional glass polishing | Light wiper arcs and swirls | Removes a thin layer, takes time |
| Resin filling | Small chips, not long scratches | Not suited to lines and arcs |
| New seals or wipers | Stopping new scratches | Does not remove old ones |
| Glass replacement | Deep scratches, scratches in the driver view, sand pitting | Higher cost, may need camera calibration |
How professional glass polishing works

- The glass is cleaned and the area masked
- A glass polish such as cerium oxide is applied with a slow machine
- The glass is kept cool and wet to avoid heat stress
- The area is checked from several angles as work goes on
Polishing glass is slow work. It is very different from polishing paint, so the tools and compounds are different too.
Polishing too deep in one spot can leave a lens effect. On the windscreen in front of the driver, a distorted patch can be worse than the scratch, so we stop if the glass starts to bend the view.
Can you remove car glass scratches yourself?
Proper cleaning
A glass cleaner and clean microfibre often removes haze that looks like scratching.
New wiper blades
Stops new arcs forming and is quick to do.
Toothpaste or baking soda
Rarely removes scratches and can leave a hazy patch.
Drill kits
Easy to overheat or distort the glass without experience.
- Do not use metal wool or abrasive pads on glass
- Do not polish over tint film or coated glass
- Do not polish in direct sun, the heat can crack the glass
Side window scratches and door seals

Vertical lines on a side window almost always come from the door seals. Sand gets into the felt and rubber strips that wipe the glass.
- Clean the seals with water and a soft brush
- Replace seals that are hard, split or packed with grit
- Check the window runs smoothly with no grinding
- Polish or replace the glass only after the seals are fixed
Door seal and window work is covered on our car door repair page.
Windscreen scratches and replacement

A windscreen is worth replacing when scratches sit in the driver’s view, when sand has pitted the whole surface, or when there is also a chip or crack.
- Replacement removes all scratches at once
- Cars with front cameras may need ADAS calibration
- OEM branded and aftermarket glass are both options
See our windshield replacement page for glass choices and the full process.
What does fixing car glass scratches cost?
Scratch depth
Light haze is quick work, deep lines take much longer.
Area covered
One wiper arc costs less than a whole pitted windscreen.
Glass type
Coated and camera equipped screens cost more to replace.
The cause
New seals or wipers may be part of the job.
Polishing is quoted after we see the glass. For replacement, our published windscreen planning prices including 5 percent VAT are below.
| Vehicle category | Aftermarket glass fitted | OEM branded glass fitted |
|---|---|---|
| Compact and mid size sedan | AED 475 to 895 | AED 840 to 1,470 |
| Mainstream SUV | AED 735 to 1,260 | AED 1,155 to 1,995 |
| Premium German saloon | AED 945 to 1,680 | AED 1,680 to 3,045 |
Camera calibration, where required, is extra. Full details are on the windshield price section. Your final quote depends on the exact car.

How to stop car glass getting scratched
- Replace wiper blades every 6 to 12 months in UAE heat
- Rinse sand off before using the wipers or washing
- Always use washer fluid, never dry wipe dust
- Clean glass with a clean microfibre, not paper or old rags
- Clean the door seals when you wash the car
- Avoid car washes with brushes if your glass is already marked
Scratches on the paint near the glass
Sand that scratches glass often marks the paint around it too, especially on the bonnet and door frames. Paint scratches are a different repair.
See our car scratch repair page, or our car polish guide for light swirls.
Scratches in window tint film
Inside only
If the mark is only felt from inside the car, it is probably in the film.
Seat belts and rings
Buckles, rings and dry cleaning scratch the soft film surface.
New film
Tint film cannot be polished. The panel is re tinted instead.
See our window tinting page if the film needs replacing.
Why Dubai drivers see more glass scratches
Fine dust
Dust settles on glass every day, and wiping it dry acts like sandpaper.
Hard wipers
Heat hardens wiper rubber quickly, so blades scrape instead of wipe.
Sand storms
Blown sand on highways and desert roads pits the windscreen over time.
Rare rain
Wipers often run on dry or dusty glass, which drags grit across it.
In our workshop, the cars with the worst windscreen arcs are usually the ones whose wipers were left on the car through two or three summers.
Rear windows, mirrors and headlight lenses
| Surface | Can it be polished? | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rear window with heater lines | Only with great care, lines can be damaged | Light polish away from the lines, or replacement |
| Side mirror glass | Rarely worth it | New mirror glass |
| Plastic headlight lens | Yes, with plastic polish, not glass polish | Headlight restoration and protection |
| Sunroof glass | Light marks only | Polish or replace the panel |
Cloudy or scratched headlights are a different job. See our headlight restoration section.
Signs a glass repair was done right
- No haze or glare when you look through the glass at night
- No wavy or magnified patch in the driver’s view
- The scratch is gone or clearly faded in sunlight
- New wipers or seals fitted if they caused the damage
- For a new windscreen, the camera warning is cleared after calibration
Check the glass at night on your first drive. Tell us straight away if anything looks wrong.
Polish or replace, a quick decision guide
| Situation | Our usual advice |
|---|---|
| Light wiper arcs, nail does not catch | Polish and fit new blades |
| Swirls from dry wiping | Deep clean, then light polish |
| Deep line outside the driver view | Try a polish, accept a faint mark |
| Deep line in front of the driver | Replace the windscreen |
| Whole windscreen pitted by sand | Replace the windscreen |
| Side window lines from the seals | New seals, then polish or new glass |
| Scratch plus a chip or crack | Windscreen check, often replacement |
When polishing would cost close to a new aftermarket windscreen, replacement usually gives the better result. We tell you that before you spend money on polishing.
Scratched glass and the RTA vehicle test
Visibility through the windscreen is part of the vehicle test. Damage in the driver’s view can lead to a fail, so check before your test date.
- Look for cracks and chips as well as scratches
- Check the wipers clear the glass cleanly
- Make sure washer jets work
- Book a check early if you are unsure

Car glass scratch questions we get asked
Can scratches on a car windscreen be removed?
Light scratches and wiper arcs can often be polished out. Deep scratches that catch a fingernail, or scratches in the driver’s view, may need a new windscreen.
What causes scratches on side windows?
Mostly sand and grit trapped in the door window seals. Each time the window moves, the grit drags across the glass.
Does toothpaste remove glass scratches?
Rarely. It can clean a light haze, but it does not remove real scratches and can leave a dull patch.
Is it safe to drive with a scratched windscreen?
Light scratches are usually fine. Scratches that cause glare at night or in low sun in the driver’s view should be fixed soon.
How long does glass polishing take?
It depends on depth and area. A few light wiper arcs can be done in a visit, while a heavily marked windscreen takes much longer.
Can polishing damage the windscreen?
Yes, if done badly. Too much heat can crack glass and too much depth in one spot can distort the view. That is why it should be done by trained hands.
Should I replace the wipers after fixing scratches?
Yes. Worn blades are the main cause of windscreen arcs, so new blades protect the repaired glass.
Can tint film scratches be polished?
No. Tint film is soft and cannot be polished. The damaged panel is re tinted instead.
Does a new windscreen need camera calibration?
On many newer cars with a front camera, yes. Calibration is quoted separately when the car needs it.
Is a scratched windscreen covered by insurance?
It depends on your policy. Some cover glass damage, others do not. Check with your insurer before booking.
Can sand pitting on a windscreen be fixed?
Light pitting may improve with polishing. Heavy pitting across the screen usually means replacement gives the clearest result.
How often should I change wiper blades in the UAE?
Every 6 to 12 months is a good guide. Heat and sun harden the rubber quickly, so check for streaks and chatter.
Can scratches on the rear window be polished?
Light marks can, with care. The heater lines are easy to damage, so deep scratches near them usually mean living with the mark or replacing the glass.
Why do my new wipers still leave marks?
Grit embedded in old scratches, a bent wiper arm or a dirty windscreen can make new blades streak. A deep clean and arm check usually solves it.
Can you polish glass on a car with a heads up display?
Only with great care, as HUD windscreens have a special layer. We check the glass type first and may advise replacement instead.
How do I book a glass check at Mechanics?
Send a photo and your car details on WhatsApp, or see our windshield replacement page. You get a written quote before any work starts.
