How car paint is built
Modern car paint has layers. Polishing only works on the top one.
- Primer bonds the paint to the metal or plastic
- Base coat gives the colour
- Clear coat gives the gloss and protects the colour
Swirls and light scratches sit in the clear coat. Polishing levels that layer so it reflects light evenly again.
The clear coat is very thin. That is why careful, gentle polishing matters, and why paint should not be polished too often.
Polish vs wax vs sealant vs ceramic
Polish removes a tiny layer to correct the paint. The others add a layer to protect it.

Right order. Wash, decontaminate, polish, then protect. A coating over swirled paint seals the swirls in.
Why does car paint go dull in Dubai?
UV slowly breaks down unprotected clear coat and fades colour.
Fine sand on the paint acts like sandpaper when wiped.
Wiping dusty paint with a cloth is the top cause of swirls.
Automatic brushes leave fine circular marks over time.
In the heat they can etch the clear coat within days.
Water spots dry fast in the sun and can mark the paint.

What can polishing fix?

Cutting compound
For heavy swirls and oxidation. Needs refining after.
One-step polish
Corrects and finishes in one pass. Suits most daily cars.
Finishing polish
Very fine. Brings out depth, great on dark colours.
All-in-one
Light polish plus protection. Limited correction.

More stages mean more time and more clear coat removed. We always start with the gentlest stage that gives the result you want.

Does paint colour make a difference?
Show every swirl. Often need a finishing stage for a clean result.
Hide swirls well but show dullness and yellowing.
Polishing brings back the sparkle in the flakes.
Must never be polished. It needs special matte care only.
How often should you polish in Dubai?
Only when the paint needs it. Each polish removes a little clear coat that cannot be replaced.

The most common cause of swirls we see is not the sun. It is dusty paint being wiped dry with a cloth.

Can cloudy headlights be polished?
Yes, if the haze is on the outside. The sun breaks down the lens UV coat over time.

Polish, touch up or repaint?
Not every paint problem is a polishing job. This table shows which repair usually fits.

What about the interior and other surfaces?
Interior surfaces are not polished like paint. They are cleaned and protected with products made for each material.
- Leather is cleaned and conditioned, not polished
- Dashboards get a non greasy UV protectant
- Glass is cleaned and can be given a water repellent
- Chrome and metal trims can be polished by hand
Shiny dressings cause glare on the windscreen. A matte finish is safer.
Heat dries leather. Regular conditioning stops cracks.
Brake dust etches in heat. Clean and seal the faces.
A water based dressing looks clean without slinging on paint.
Questions to ask any detailer
- Will you do a test spot before polishing the whole car?
- How many stages are included in the price?
- Which protection is included, and how long should it last?
- How will trims, rubber and badges be protected?
- What happens if a scratch is too deep to remove?
- How should I wash the car afterwards?
Clear answers to these questions are a good sign. A detailer who promises to remove every scratch without seeing the car is not.
Can you polish your car yourself?
You can do light hand polishing and waxing at home. Machine correction is a different job.
- Too much pressure or speed can burn through the clear coat
- Edges and body lines have thin paint and are easy to damage
- Polishing in direct sun dries the product and leaves marks
- A dirty pad adds new scratches instead of removing them
If you try it yourself, work in the shade on a cool panel, use clean pads and start with the mildest product.
How much does car polishing cost in Dubai?
SUVs take longer than sedans.

How to keep the shine after polishing
- Rinse dust off before touching the paint
- Use pH neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre mitt
- Use a separate mitt for wheels
- Remove bird droppings quickly, heat makes them etch
- Park in shade or use a breathable cover
- Top up protection when water stops beading
- Do not dry wipe dusty paint
- Avoid brush car washes on freshly corrected paint

A safe weekly wash routine for Dubai
A good wash routine keeps a polished car looking sharp for much longer. This is the method we recommend to customers.

Rinse the whole car to lift sand and dust before any mitt touches the paint.

Clean wheels and tyres with their own brush and mitt.

Two bucket wash
One bucket with shampoo, one with clean water to rinse the mitt.

Wash from the roof down, as the lower panels carry the most grit.

Use a clean drying towel or blower. Pat or glide, do not scrub.

Car polish questions we get asked
Does polishing damage car paint?
Done carefully and not too often, it is safe. It removes a very small amount of clear coat. Aggressive or frequent polishing can damage paint, so the gentlest method should be used.
Is polishing the same as waxing?
No. Polishing removes swirls by levelling the surface. Waxing adds a thin protective layer on top.
Should I polish before ceramic coating?
Yes. Ceramic locks in what is underneath, including swirls, so the paint should be corrected first.
Can toothpaste remove car scratches?
Not a good idea. It is an uncontrolled abrasive that can haze the clear coat. A proper polish gives a predictable result.
How long does a professional polish take?
A one-step polish on a sedan is often done the same day. Multi-step correction, large SUVs or ceramic coating take longer.
Can a new car need polishing?
Sometimes. Light swirls can appear from transport and dealer washing. A light polish before coating gives the best start.
Will polishing remove bird dropping marks?
Light marks usually come out. Deep etching left for a long time may only improve, because it has eaten into the clear coat.
Can matte paint be polished?
No. Polishing makes matte paint shiny in patches. Matte finishes need special cleaning products only.
How long does the shine last?
The correction lasts until new swirls form. With good protection and safe washing, the finish can stay sharp for a long time.
Is polishing worth it on an old car?
Often, yes. Older paint can look much better after correction, as long as the clear coat is still intact. We check the paint first and tell you honestly what result to expect.
Does the sun damage a freshly polished car?
Fresh polish without protection is exposed to UV and dust straight away. That is why we always finish with wax, sealant or ceramic coating.
Do you polish wheels and trims too?
Yes. Wheels, exhaust tips and some trims can be cleaned and polished as part of a detail. Ask for them in your quote.
