In this guide
When a Mercedes cranks but will not start, the engine is turning but it is missing fuel, spark or the permission to run. The most common causes are a weak battery that cranks too slowly, a failed fuel pump or its control module, a faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensor, a key or immobiliser fault and, on diesels, glow plug or fuel pressure problems. A scan of the engine and the key system usually points to the cause quickly.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. No start faults on Mercedes saloons and SUVs are a common reason for recovery calls in summer.
Use it to rule out the simple causes and to tell us what you see, so we can advise you quickly.
What to do first
Do not keep cranking for long periods. Try for no more than about ten seconds at a time, with a pause between tries. Long cranking flattens the battery, overheats the starter and can wash fuel into the engine.
-
Check the dashboard
Note any key, engine or battery messages before you try again.
-
Check the key
Try the spare key, or hold the key near the start button area if your model allows it.
-
Listen at the start
Turn the ignition on without starting and listen for a short hum from the fuel pump at the rear.
-
Check the fuel
Make sure the gauge is not near empty, as some models struggle on a very low tank.
-
Call for advice
Send us a short video of the cranking and a photo of the dashboard. We advise whether a jump start may help or recovery is needed.
Mercedes cranking but not starting? Send us a video and your location, and we will tell you the likely cause and arrange recovery if needed.
Cranks but will not start, or does not crank at all?

These are two different problems, and the difference saves time.
- Cranks but will not start means the starter turns the engine but it never fires
- No crank means only a click, or nothing at all, when you press start
- No crank usually points to the battery, starter or the start signal
- Cranks but no start points to fuel, spark, sensors or the immobiliser
If your car does not crank at all, our car will not start service page covers those checks.
Common causes at a glance
| What you notice | Likely cause | How we confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Slow, laboured cranking | Weak battery or poor connection | Battery and starting load test |
| Normal cranking, no fuel pump hum | Fuel pump, pump module, relay or fuse | Fuel pressure test and scan |
| Normal cranking, rev counter does not move | Crankshaft sensor fault | Live sensor data while cranking |
| Key warning on the dashboard | Key battery, key fault or immobiliser | Key and electronic ignition scan |
| Starts briefly then dies | Immobiliser cut, fuel pressure loss | Scan and fuel pressure monitoring |
| Fuel smell, no start | Flooding or ignition fault | Spark test and plug inspection |
| Diesel, worse when cold or after rest | Glow plugs or fuel pressure loss | Glow plug test and rail pressure data |
The main causes explained
1. A weak battery

A Mercedes can crank on a tired battery but not fire, because the voltage drops too low for the engine computer and fuel system.
- Car batteries in Dubai often last only two to three years
- Cranking sounds slower than usual
- Dashboard lights dim or flicker while cranking
- Many models have a second battery that can also fail
New batteries on many Mercedes models must be the correct type and registered. Read our car battery replacement page for details.
2. Fuel pump and fuel supply
Fuel pump
The in tank pump wears out, especially when the car is often run low on fuel.
Pump control module
Many Mercedes models control the pump through a module that can fail.
Relay or fuse
A cheap part that stops the pump completely.
High pressure pump
Direct injection engines need a second pump that can lose pressure.
Heat inside the fuel tank adds stress to the pump in summer. A fuel pressure test confirms whether fuel is reaching the engine.
3. Crankshaft and camshaft sensors

The engine computer needs to know where the engine is in its rotation before it fires the injectors and spark plugs.
- A failed crankshaft sensor gives no signal, so the engine never fires
- The rev counter often does not move while cranking
- Heat can make a weak sensor fail only when the engine is hot
- A camshaft sensor fault can cause long cranking before it starts
4. Key and immobiliser faults
- A flat key battery stops the car recognising the key
- A damaged key or a faulty start button area
- An electronic ignition switch or steering lock fault
- Communication faults between the key system and engine computer
Try the spare key first. If it starts with the spare, the problem is the main key. Our key fob repair page explains the options.
5. Ignition and flooding on petrol engines
Without spark, fuel in the cylinders does not burn. Repeated tries can flood the engine.
- Failed ignition coils or a shared coil power feed
- Fouled or worn spark plugs
- Leaking injectors that flood a cylinder
- A strong fuel smell after cranking
6. Diesel specific causes
Hard starting
Failed glow plugs or their control unit make starting difficult, worse after the car rests.
Low rail pressure
A worn high pressure pump or leaking injectors stop the engine reaching starting pressure.
After running dry
Running out of diesel lets air into the system, which must be bled out.
Why no start faults rise in Dubai summers
Battery life
High temperatures shorten battery life sharply, often without warning.
Hot restarts
Sensors and fuel pumps fail more often when the car is restarted hot.
Long rests
Cars left for weeks while owners travel come back with flat batteries.
Low tank
Running on a low tank makes the pump work hotter in summer.
What you can safely check yourself
- Try the spare key
- Record a short video of the cranking with sound
- Photograph every message on the dashboard
- Check the fuel gauge and add fuel if it is very low
- Listen for the fuel pump hum when the ignition is switched on
- Note whether the problem happens hot, cold or after the car has rested
- Do not crank for long periods without a pause
- Do not spray starting fluid into the intake
- Do not disconnect parts or fuses unless you know the system
- Do not tow an automatic Mercedes on its wheels without the right method
How Mechanics diagnoses a Mercedes no start
-
Hear the story
When it happened, whether it was hot or cold and what the dashboard showed.
-
Test the battery
Voltage, load and cranking voltage are checked first, on both batteries where fitted.
-
Scan all systems
Engine, key, ignition switch and fuel pump modules are read for fault codes.
-
Watch live data
Engine speed signal, fuel pressure and key status are read while cranking.
-
Test fuel and spark
Fuel pressure, pump power and ignition are confirmed.
-
Pinpoint tests
Sensor, wiring and relay tests confirm the exact failed part.
-

How much does a Mercedes no start repair cost in Dubai?
| Work | Planning budget |
|---|---|
| Inspection at Mechanics | Free initial inspection |
| Electrical diagnosis | From AED 105 |
| Computer diagnostic scan | AED 100 to 400 |
| Battery replacement fitted | About AED 200 to 1,000 or more by type |
| Crankshaft or camshaft sensor | Quote for your engine |
| Fuel pump or pump module | Quote for your model |
| Key or ignition switch repair | Quote after testing |
These figures come from our car will not start, computer check and battery pages. Your written quote confirms the exact part and labour.
The failed part
A sensor costs far less than a high pressure fuel pump.
Access
Fuel pumps under the rear seat or sensors behind the engine take longer.
Coding
Batteries, keys and some modules must be registered or coded.
Recovery
Recovery to the workshop is quoted separately when needed.
Models we see most with no start faults
| Model family | What we often find |
|---|---|
| C-Class and E-Class petrol | Battery, crankshaft sensor and fuel pump module faults |
| S-Class | Second battery, key system and electronic ignition faults |
| GLE and GLS | Battery, fuel pump and sensor faults in hot restarts |
| G-Class | Battery and fuel delivery faults after long parking |
| Diesel models | Glow plugs and fuel pressure loss |
How to avoid a no start
- Have the battery tested before every summer
- Keep the fuel tank above a quarter in hot weather
- Replace the key battery at the first key warning
- Use a battery maintainer if the car will be parked for weeks
- Get starting warnings and long cranking checked early
How to jump start a Mercedes safely

A jump start helps only when a weak battery is the cause. Done wrongly, it can damage modules on a modern Mercedes.
- Use the jump start points in the engine bay, not the battery in the boot or under a seat
- Switch off lights, AC and all accessories in both cars
- Connect positive to positive, then negative to the marked earth point
- Let the donor car run for a few minutes before trying to start
- Remove the leads in reverse order once the car is running
If the car starts on a jump but fails again later, the battery or charging system needs testing. Our guide to car battery terminals also covers connection problems.
Battery or something else, a quick guide
| What happens | Points to |
|---|---|
| Cranks slowly, starts after a jump | Battery or connections |
| Cranks at normal speed, never fires, jump makes no difference | Fuel, sensor or key system |
| Starts for a second then stops | Immobiliser or fuel pressure |
| Only fails when the engine is hot | Crankshaft sensor or fuel pump heat fault |
| Only fails after the car rests for days | Battery drain or fuel pressure loss |
Telling us which row matches your car saves time. It often lets us bring the right part on the first visit.
When your Mercedes needs recovery
If the car will not start after the simple checks, recovery to the workshop is the safest option. Pushing an automatic Mercedes or towing it on its wheels can damage the gearbox.
Share a pin
Send the exact location on WhatsApp so the recovery truck finds the car quickly.
Have both keys
The spare key helps us rule out key faults on arrival.
Car park access
Tell us the floor and height limits if the car is in a basement car park.
Correct transport
Most Mercedes models should travel on a flatbed, not towed on their wheels.
Once the car arrives, we test the battery, scan every system and send you the findings with a written quote before any repair.

Mercedes no start questions we get asked
Why does my Mercedes crank but not start?
The engine is turning but missing fuel, spark or permission to run. Common causes are a weak battery, a fuel pump or pump module fault, a crankshaft sensor fault and key or immobiliser problems.
Can a weak battery cause a crank but no start?
Yes. The engine can turn slowly but the voltage drops too low for the computer and fuel system to work. A load test confirms it.
How do I know if my Mercedes fuel pump is bad?
Signs include no hum from the rear when the ignition is switched on, low fuel pressure and pump module fault codes. A fuel pressure test confirms it.
What does a crankshaft sensor fault do?
Without its signal the engine computer does not know the engine position, so it never fires. The rev counter often stays still while cranking.
Can the key stop my Mercedes from starting?
Yes. A flat key battery, a damaged key or an immobiliser fault can let the engine crank but block fuel and spark. Try the spare key first.
Why does my Mercedes not start when hot?
Heat can make a weak crankshaft sensor or fuel pump fail until it cools. Note the pattern and tell us, it helps the diagnosis.
Should I keep trying to start it?
No. Try for about ten seconds at a time with pauses. Long cranking flattens the battery and can overheat the starter.
Can I jump start a Mercedes?
Many models can be jump started from the correct points in the engine bay. Check your handbook, as using the wrong points can damage electronics.
How much does a Mercedes no start diagnosis cost?
The initial inspection at Mechanics is free. Planning figures for paid electrical diagnosis start from AED 105, and scans range from AED 100 to 400.
Why does my diesel Mercedes start badly after resting?
Failed glow plugs or fuel pressure loss while the car rests are the usual causes. A glow plug test and rail pressure data confirm it.
Do new Mercedes batteries need coding?
On many models the new battery must be the correct type and registered to the car, so the charging system works properly.
Can you recover my Mercedes to your workshop?
Yes. Send your location on WhatsApp and we arrange recovery to our Al Quoz workshop, with a free inspection on arrival.
