In this guide
A car AC that stops cooling in Dubai is most often low on refrigerant because of a leak, or the condenser is not getting enough airflow because a cooling fan has failed. Other common causes are a tired compressor, a blocked cabin filter, a faulty blend door or an electrical fault in the AC controls. The right repair depends on which part has failed, so a pressure test should always come before a gas refill.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. AC faults are one of the most common jobs we see from May to October.
Use it to understand the likely cause before you spend money. Then let a technician confirm it with a proper test.
Why is my car AC blowing warm air?
The AC moves heat out of the cabin using refrigerant, a compressor and a condenser at the front of the car. If any part of that loop is weak, the air from the vents gets warmer.
| What you notice | Most likely cause | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling got weaker over weeks | Slow refrigerant leak | Book soon |
| Cold while driving, warm at traffic lights | Condenser fan or poor airflow | Book soon |
| Warm air all the time | Very low gas, compressor not engaging, fuse or relay | Book this week |
| Cold on one side, warm on the other | Blend door actuator or dual zone control | Book when convenient |
| Weak airflow from the vents | Blocked cabin filter or blower motor | Book when convenient |
| Loud grinding or squeal when AC is on | Compressor or its clutch failing | Switch AC off and book now |
| Temperature gauge rising with AC on | Shared cooling fan fault | Stop and call us |
AC blowing warm in this heat? Send us the car model and what you notice, and we will tell you the likely cause before you drive in.
How a car AC cools the cabin

Knowing the main parts makes it easier to follow what the technician tells you.
- The compressor pumps refrigerant around the system
- The condenser in front of the radiator releases the heat
- Cooling fans pull air through the condenser at low speed
- The expansion valve lets the refrigerant drop in pressure
- The evaporator behind the dashboard turns cold
- The blower pushes cabin air across the evaporator to the vents
The refrigerant does not get used up. If the level drops, it has escaped through a leak somewhere in the loop.
The main causes of a car AC not cooling
1. Low refrigerant from a leak
This is the most common cause we find. The leak is often slow, so cooling fades gradually over weeks.
- Condenser damage from stones or a minor front impact
- Worn O ring seals at pipe joints
- Cracked or rubbed AC hoses
- A leaking compressor shaft seal
- An evaporator leak behind the dashboard
A refill without fixing the leak usually buys a few weeks at best. A dye or electronic leak test finds the exact point.
2. Condenser fan or airflow problems

At speed, air flows through the condenser on its own. In Dubai traffic the fan has to do that work.
- A failed fan motor or fan resistor
- A blown fuse or faulty fan relay
- A condenser clogged with sand, dust or insects
- Bent condenser fins after jet washing
The same fan often cools the engine too. Our guide to a radiator fan not working explains the checks in more detail.
3. A worn or failing compressor
Clutch not engaging
The compressor pulley spins but the centre does not. Often a clutch gap, coil or relay fault.
Internal wear
The compressor runs but cannot build enough pressure, so cooling stays weak.
Noise when AC is on
Grinding, knocking or a loud whine can mean bearing or internal damage.
Control valve fault
Many modern compressors use an electronic valve that can fail on its own.
A compressor that failed badly can send debris through the system. That is why we check the oil and system condition before quoting a new one.
4. Electrical and sensor faults
- A pressure switch or sensor telling the system the gas is too low or too high
- A blown AC fuse or failed relay
- A cabin temperature sensor giving a wrong reading
- Damaged wiring near hot engine parts
- A climate control panel or module fault
These need a scan and electrical tests. Our car computer check reads the climate system codes.
5. Inside the cabin

Sometimes the system makes cold air but it cannot reach you.
- A cabin filter blocked with dust and sand
- A weak blower motor or failed blower resistor
- A blend door stuck on the heat side
- Debris blocking the evaporator face
A dirty filter can also cause smells. See our guide to car AC smell removal.
Why AC problems peak in Dubai summers
Highest pressure
Hot air makes the system run at high pressure, which finds any weak seal or hose.
Slow airflow
Long waits at signals rely on the fan, so a weak fan shows up quickly.
Clogged parts
Dust packs the condenser and cabin filter and cuts their performance.
AC all day
The compressor works almost every time the car runs, for months at a time.
We often find that a car which cooled well in spring struggles by July. The fault was there already, and the heat simply exposed it.
What you can safely check yourself
- Check that the AC button light comes on and the fan speed changes
- Feel whether the air is colder while driving than at idle
- Look through the front grille for a condenser packed with dirt
- With the AC on and the engine idling, check whether a cooling fan runs
- Note whether cold air reaches both sides of the dashboard
- Check when the cabin filter was last changed
- Do not use DIY refill cans, as overfilling can damage the compressor
- Do not open AC pipes, the system is under high pressure
- Do not keep driving if the temperature gauge is rising
- Do not ignore grinding noises from the compressor
How Mechanics diagnoses an AC that is not cooling
-
Listen to the symptom
When it got weaker, whether it is worse at idle and any noises or smells.
-
Measure vent temperature
A thermometer in the centre vent gives a starting figure we can compare after the repair.
-
Read the pressures
Gauges on the high and low sides show whether the gas, compressor or airflow is the problem.
-
Check the fans and condenser
Fan operation, condenser condition and airflow are confirmed.
-
Scan the climate system
Fault codes and sensor readings point to electrical and control faults.
-
Leak test
If the gas is low, dye or an electronic detector finds the leak.

Gas refill or repair, which do you need?
| Situation | Right approach |
|---|---|
| Old car, cooling faded slowly over years, no leak found | A recharge to the correct quantity can be reasonable |
| Cooling faded within weeks or months | Find and fix the leak, then recharge |
| Gas level correct but cooling weak | Check fans, condenser, compressor and blend doors |
| No gas at all in the system | Large leak, repair before any recharge |
| Compressor noisy or seized | Compressor replacement with a system flush where needed |
A good recharge recovers the old gas, pulls a vacuum, then adds the exact quantity the car needs. More gas does not mean colder air.
How much does car AC repair cost in Dubai?
| Work | Planning budget including 5 percent VAT |
|---|---|
| AC check at Mechanics | Free initial inspection |
| R134a gas refill | AED 160 to 420 per vehicle |
| R1234yf gas refill | AED 370 to 740 per vehicle |
| Accessible minor leak repair | AED 210 to 840 per vehicle |
| Cabin filter replacement | AED 105 to 315 per vehicle |
| Compressor replacement | AED 1,260 to 4,725 per vehicle |
| Condenser or evaporator replacement | Quote after inspection |
These figures come from our car AC repair price guide. They are planning estimates, and your written quote depends on the car and the fault we confirm.
Gas type
Newer cars use R1234yf, which costs more than the older R134a gas.
Part location
An evaporator behind the dashboard takes far more labour than a hose.
Parts choice
Genuine, OE supplier and quality aftermarket parts differ in price.
System condition
Debris after a compressor failure may need a flush and new parts.
Common AC repairs and what they fix

We replace only what the tests show has failed, and we confirm cooling before handover.
- Seal and hose repairs for slow leaks
- Condenser replacement after damage or blockage
- Fan motor, relay or resistor replacement
- Compressor or clutch replacement
- Blower motor, resistor or blend door repairs
For a deeper look at each part, read our guide to car AC parts, maintenance and repair.
How to keep your car AC cooling longer
- Run the AC regularly, even in cooler months, to keep the seals lubricated
- Replace the cabin filter at least once a year in Dubai
- Have the condenser cleaned gently when it is packed with dust
- Book a check as soon as cooling starts to fade
- Park in the shade and open the windows for a minute before using full AC
- Fix a weak cooling fan quickly, it protects the engine as well
What happens if you keep driving with weak AC?
Weak cooling is rarely dangerous on its own, but the fault behind it usually grows. Acting early keeps the repair small.
| If you wait | What can happen | Effect on cost |
|---|---|---|
| A slow leak is left alone | The compressor runs short of oil carried by the refrigerant | A seal repair can turn into a compressor job |
| A failed fan is ignored | System pressure climbs in traffic and the engine runs hotter | Risk of compressor and engine cooling damage |
| A noisy compressor keeps running | Metal debris spreads through the pipes and condenser | System flush and extra parts are needed |
| A blocked cabin filter stays in | The blower works harder and moisture builds up | Blower faults and lasting smells |
A free inspection costs you nothing and tells you which of these you are dealing with. Most AC faults we catch early are fixed in a single visit.
AC faults we see most on different cars in Dubai
Rear AC lines
Big SUVs run long pipes to a rear AC unit. These can corrode or rub through under the car, so the third row stays warm.
Electronic compressors
Many use a variable compressor with a control valve, and some use climate modules that need a scan to diagnose.
Condenser and fan
Small and mid size cars that sit in traffic most often show fan and condenser airflow faults.
Electric compressors
These use high voltage compressors and special oil, so only trained technicians with the right equipment should work on them.

Car AC questions we get asked
Why is my car AC not cooling in Dubai?
The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak and a cooling fan that is not pulling air through the condenser. A worn compressor, a blocked cabin filter, a blend door fault or an electrical problem can also stop the AC cooling.
Why is my AC cold while driving but warm at idle?
That pattern usually points to airflow. At speed, air passes through the condenser naturally. At idle the cooling fan must do it, so a weak or failed fan, or a blocked condenser, shows up in traffic.
Will a gas refill fix my car AC?
Only if the gas is low and there is no active leak. If the gas escaped quickly, a refill without a leak repair usually lasts a short time. A pressure and leak test tells you which case you have.
How much is an AC gas refill in Dubai?
As a planning guide, an R134a refill is about AED 160 to 420 and an R1234yf refill about AED 370 to 740, including VAT. Your quote depends on the car and the gas quantity it needs.
How do I know if my AC compressor is bad?
Signs include warm air with the correct gas level, a clutch that will not engage, grinding or whining with the AC on, and leaks around the compressor body. Gauge readings confirm it.
How much does an AC compressor cost in Dubai?
Our planning range for compressor replacement is about AED 1,260 to 4,725 including VAT. The model, the part choice and whether the system needs flushing change the final price.
Can a dirty cabin filter stop the AC cooling?
It can make the AC feel weak because less air reaches you, and it can cause smells. It does not stop the system making cold air, but it is a cheap first check.
Why is one side of my car cold and the other warm?
On dual zone systems this usually points to a blend door actuator or a temperature sensor. On some cars very low gas can also cause it, so we check both.
Is it safe to use DIY AC refill cans?
We do not recommend them. They cannot measure the exact quantity, they can overfill the system and some contain sealants that damage workshop equipment and AC parts.
Can AC problems cause engine overheating?
They can share a cause. Many cars use the same electric fan for the condenser and radiator, so a failed fan can bring warm AC and a rising temperature gauge together.
How long does a car AC repair take?
A recharge or a simple seal repair is often done the same day. Compressor, condenser or evaporator work depends on parts, and we confirm the time with the quote.
How do I book an AC check at Mechanics?
