In this guide
Mercedes Airmatic problems usually show as a car sitting low after parking, a stop or visit workshop warning, a compressor that runs for a long time or a harsh, bouncy ride. The most common causes are a leaking air strut, a worn compressor, a leaking valve block, a faulty level sensor or a failed compressor relay. Fixing the leak early often saves the compressor, which keeps the repair far smaller.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. Airmatic faults on S-Class, E-Class, GLE and GLS models are a regular job in our workshop.
It is written for Mercedes owners who want to understand the fault before they approve a repair.
What is Mercedes Airmatic?

Airmatic is the Mercedes name for its air suspension. It replaces steel springs with air springs, so the car can adjust its height and ride.
- Air struts or air springs at each corner
- An electric compressor with an air dryer
- A valve block that sends air to each corner
- Level sensors that report the height of the car
- Adaptive dampers that change the ride firmness
- A pressure reservoir on many models
Some models combine Airmatic with active body control or newer active suspension systems. We confirm exactly which system your car has from the VIN before quoting.
Which Mercedes models use Airmatic?
| Model family | Airmatic fitted | What we see most |
|---|---|---|
| S-Class | Standard on most versions | Front strut leaks, compressor wear |
| E-Class and CLS | On many versions, optional on others | Rear air spring leaks, sensor faults |
| GLE and the older ML | Optional or standard by trim | Strut leaks, valve block faults |
| GLS and the older GL | Standard on most versions | Heavy load on struts, compressor failure |
| Maybach models | Standard | Strut leaks and damper faults |
| AMG versions | Varies by model | Firmer struts, adaptive damper faults |
Not every car in a model line has Airmatic. Steel spring versions exist for many models, so a quick check of your car saves guesswork.
Airmatic warning signs and what they mean
| What you notice | Likely cause | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| One corner low in the morning | Leaking air strut or its air line | Book soon |
| Whole car low after parking | Valve block or reservoir leak | Book soon |
| Compressor runs after every start | A leak somewhere, compressor working hard | Book this week |
| Visit workshop message | A stored fault in the Airmatic system | Book this week |
| Stop vehicle or car too low message | Pressure too low to hold the car | Stop safely and call us |
| Harsh or bouncy ride | Worn damper inside the strut, or damper fault | Book soon |
| Tyre touching the wheel arch | Corner fully deflated | Do not drive, arrange recovery |
Never work or reach under a Mercedes held up only by its air suspension. It can drop without warning. Workshops use the jack mode where fitted and support the car on a lift.

The main causes of Airmatic failure
1. Leaking air struts

The rubber bellows flex every time the wheel moves. Heat dries the rubber and fine cracks form in the folds.
- Front struts on heavy models carry the most load
- Cracks start where the bellows rolls over the piston
- Sand in the folds speeds up wear
- The top air fitting can leak even when the bellows is fine
On most Airmatic cars the air spring and damper are one strut. When the damper is also worn, a complete strut is the right part.
2. A worn Airmatic compressor
Overworked
A leak makes the compressor run often and hot, which wears it out.
Weak output
A worn piston seal leaves the compressor running but unable to lift the car.
Relay failure
A stuck relay can leave the compressor running until it burns out.
Wet dryer
A saturated dryer lets moisture reach the valves and struts.
Fitting a new compressor without fixing the leak is the most common mistake we see. The new one fails early for the same reason as the old one.
3. The valve block
- Internal seals leak and let one or more corners drop
- Moisture from a failed dryer damages the valves
- The car drops on several corners at once
- Connectors can corrode, causing warnings that come and go
4. Level sensors and wiring
- A bent linkage after a kerb or off road knock gives wrong readings
- A failed sensor makes one corner sit too high or too low
- Wiring and plugs near the wheels suffer from heat and water
- Calibration is needed after many suspension repairs
5. Adaptive damper faults
Airmatic struts contain electronically controlled dampers. A damper fault does not always cause sinking, but it changes the ride.
- A harsh, crashing ride over bumps
- A floaty, bouncy feel on the highway
- A damper warning stored in the control unit
Why Airmatic fails sooner in Dubai
Rubber ageing
Bellows, seals and air lines harden faster in constant high heat.
Heavy SUVs
GLS and GLE models carry large loads, which raises the pressure the struts must hold.
Grit in the folds
Dust and sand rub inside the bellows folds as they flex.
Constant movement
Frequent speed bumps and car park ramps work the struts and sensors hard.
We often find a car that has sunk overnight for months while still driving normally. That is the cheapest stage to repair it, before the compressor gives up.
What you can safely check yourself
- Park on level ground and photograph the wheel arch gaps in the evening and the morning
- Listen for a hiss near a wheel after parking
- Note how long the compressor runs after starting
- Photograph any Airmatic or suspension message
- Note whether the car rises when you start it
- Do not go under the car while it sits on air
- Do not keep restarting the car to force the compressor to lift it
- Do not drive with a tyre touching the arch
- Do not jack the car without setting jack mode where it has one
How Mechanics diagnoses Airmatic faults
-
Listen to you
Which corner drops, how fast and whether it happens parked or driving.
-
Measure the height
Each corner is measured and compared with the car’s own level sensor readings.
-
Scan the system
Fault codes, sensor values and compressor run data are read with a Mercedes capable tool.
-
Make it safe
Jack mode is set and the car is supported on the lift, never on air alone.
-
Leak test
Leak spray on the struts, fittings, lines and valve block finds the escaping air.
-
Test the compressor
Fill time, relay, fuse and dryer condition are checked.

Common Airmatic repairs and what they fix

We replace only the part that the tests show has failed, then check the other corners and calibrate the height.
- We tell you the condition of the other struts
- We test the compressor before recommending one
- We finish with a level calibration and road test
| Repair | Fixes | Usually followed by |
|---|---|---|
| Air strut replacement | Low corner, hiss, worn damper | Level calibration and road test |
| Air line or fitting repair | Pinhole leaks at one corner | Leak test |
| Valve block repair or replacement | Several corners dropping | Leak test and scan |
| Compressor and dryer replacement | Slow or no lift, overheating compressor | Relay check and fill time test |

| Level sensor replacement | Wrong height, warnings | Level calibration |
How much does Airmatic repair cost in Dubai?
| Work | Planning budget including 5 percent VAT |
|---|---|
| Airmatic inspection at Mechanics | Free initial inspection |
| Air spring replacement | AED 945 to 2,625 per spring |
| Complete air strut | Quote for your model |
| Compressor, valve block or sensor | Quote after diagnosis |
These figures come from our suspension repair price section. Struts for S-Class, GLS and Maybach models can sit above the planning range, and your quote confirms the exact part.
Spring or full strut
A complete strut with an adaptive damper costs more than an air spring alone.
The model
Heavy SUVs and flagship saloons use larger and pricier struts.
Parts choice
Genuine, OE supplier and remanufactured struts differ in price and warranty.
Extra work
Calibration, alignment or a second leak are listed separately.
Should Airmatic struts be replaced in pairs?
Not always. A leaking strut can be replaced on its own if the other side is healthy. We recommend pairs when the dampers are worn on both sides, because uneven dampers change how the car handles.
| Situation | Our usual advice |
|---|---|
| One strut leaking, the other dry and damping well | Replace the leaking strut only |
| One strut leaking, the other showing cracks | Replace both on that axle |
| High mileage and harsh or floaty ride | Replace both on that axle |
| Compressor already replaced once | Find every leak before fitting anything |
Can Airmatic be converted to coil springs?
Conversion kits exist for some models. They can cost less than new struts, but there are trade offs.
- The car loses adjustable ride height
- The ride quality changes from the original design
- The car can show warnings unless the system is set up correctly
- Resale value can be affected on luxury models
We explain the options honestly for your car before you decide.
How to make Airmatic last longer
- Fix a slow leak early, before the compressor wears out
- Ask for the struts and air lines to be checked at every service
- Rinse sand from the wheel arches after desert trips
- Park in the shade when you can
- Take speed bumps slowly and straight on
- Do not overload the car beyond its rated weight
Airmatic warning messages explained
| Message on the dashboard | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Airmatic visit workshop | A fault code is stored, often a leak, sensor or compressor issue | Drive gently and book a scan this week |
| Airmatic stop vehicle | Pressure is too low or the car is too low to drive safely | Stop safely and call us |
| Vehicle lowering or car too low | The system cannot hold the set height | Check the wheel arches before moving |
| Wait to drive off | The system is lifting the car after a rest | Wait for it to rise, then book a leak check |
| Level control inoperative | Electrical or sensor fault | Book a scan soon |
Wording differs between model years, and newer cars may show a symbol instead of text. A photo of the message helps us advise you before you drive in.
Note the timing
Tell us whether the message appears after parking, while driving or only on bumpy roads.
Watch the height
A message with normal height is usually less urgent than one with a low corner.
Do not clear it
Let us read the stored code first, it often points straight to the failed part.
What a full Airmatic check includes
- Ride height measured at all four corners and compared with sensor data
- A full scan of the Airmatic and damper control units
- Leak tests on every strut, fitting, air line and the valve block
- Compressor fill time, relay and dryer checks
- A visual check of the bellows for cracks and sand damage
- A road test to confirm ride quality and height control
You receive photos of what we find and a written quote. If the system is healthy, we tell you so and you pay nothing for the inspection.

Mercedes Airmatic questions we get asked
What are the signs of Airmatic failure?
The car sitting low after parking, one corner lower than the rest, a compressor that runs for a long time, a visit workshop or stop vehicle message and a harsh or bouncy ride.
Why does my Mercedes sink overnight?
It is losing air while parked. The leak is usually in an air strut, an air line fitting or the valve block. A leak test on the lift finds the exact point.
Can I drive with an Airmatic warning?
If the car still sits at a usable height, drive gently and only to the workshop. If it shows stop vehicle or a tyre touches the arch, arrange recovery.
How much does Airmatic repair cost in Dubai?
Our planning range for an air spring is AED 945 to 2,625 per spring including VAT. Complete struts, compressors and valve blocks are quoted after diagnosis for your model.
Why did my new Airmatic compressor fail quickly?
Usually because a leak was left in the system, so the new compressor ran too often and overheated. Every leak should be found before a compressor is fitted.
Do Airmatic struts need replacing in pairs?
Not always. A single leaking strut can be replaced if the other side is healthy. Pairs are better when both dampers are worn.
What is the Airmatic relay?
It is the electrical switch that powers the compressor. A stuck relay can stop the compressor or leave it running until it burns out, so we test it first.
Which Mercedes models have Airmatic?
Most S-Class and GLS models, many E-Class, CLS and GLE versions, and Maybach models. Some trims use steel springs, so we confirm from the VIN.
How long do Airmatic struts last in Dubai?
It varies with heat, load and use. Many begin to leak after several years, and heavy SUVs often need attention sooner than saloons.
Can I convert my Mercedes to coil springs?
Kits exist for some models. You lose adjustable height and the original ride, and the car may show warnings unless set up correctly.
Is it safe to jack up a car with Airmatic?
Only with jack mode set where the car has it, and on proper stands or a lift. Never go under a car held up only by its air suspension.
How do I book an Airmatic check at Mechanics?
Send the model and the symptom on WhatsApp. The initial inspection is free and you get a written quote before any work starts.
