In this guide
You can remove a car scratch at home only when it sits in the clear coat, the thin clear top layer of the paint. If your fingernail does not catch and the mark fades when wet, a gentle hand polish with a scratch remover usually works. If the nail catches, or you see white primer or bare metal, stop and have the panel repaired by a body shop.
This guide is written by the Mechanics workshop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. Scratches from parking, sand and car washes are some of the most common jobs that reach our body shop.
Use it to judge how deep your scratch is and what you can safely do yourself. If you are unsure, a photo on WhatsApp is enough for a first opinion.
When is a scratch safe to fix yourself and when should you stop?
A scratch is not a driving safety issue on its own. The risk is making it worse, or leaving bare metal open to moisture.
| What you see | Risk to the paint | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fine swirl marks or light haze | Low | Safe to hand polish carefully |
| Light line, nail does not catch | Low | Try a scratch remover by hand |
| Nail catches slightly, colour still visible | Medium | Stop and get it assessed |
| White or grey layer showing | High | Primer is exposed, workshop repair |
| Shiny silver metal showing | High | Book soon to stop rust |
| Scratch with a dent or crack | High | Body repair needed, do not polish |
Never use sandpaper, kitchen scourers or household cleaners on paint. These cut through the clear coat fast and turn a small mark into a full panel repaint.
Not sure how deep your scratch is? Send us two clear photos and the car model, and we will tell you if a polish will do or if it needs paint.
How car paint layers work

Factory paint is built in layers on top of the steel or aluminium panel. Each layer has a job, and the depth of a scratch decides the repair.
- Clear coat, the glossy top layer that protects the colour
- Base coat, the thin layer that gives the colour
- Primer, the layer that helps paint stick and resists corrosion
- Metal or plastic panel underneath
Clear coat scratch
Only the top layer is marked. Polishing can often level it out.
Base coat scratch
The colour layer is cut. It needs paint, not just polish.
Primer scratch
A white or grey line shows. The area must be filled and painted.
Metal scratch
Bare metal is exposed. It needs treating before moisture starts rust.
How to check scratch depth with the fingernail test
-
Wash and dry the area
Dust and wax can hide the real depth, so clean the panel first.
-
Run your fingernail across it
Drag a nail gently across the scratch, not along it.
-
Feel for a catch
No catch usually means clear coat only, a catch means it is deeper.
-
Wet the scratch
If it almost disappears when wet, it is likely in the clear coat.
-
Look at the colour inside
White, grey or silver inside the line means primer or metal is showing.

Dark colours show every mark, so black cars often look worse than they are. Check in shade and in daylight before you decide.
- Use a phone torch at an angle to see the edges
- Take photos from two angles for a second opinion
What your scratch looks like and what it means
| What you notice | Likely depth | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Circular swirl marks in sunlight | Clear coat surface | Machine polish by a detailer |
| Light line that fades when wet | Clear coat | Hand polish or small area polish |
| Line you can feel, same colour inside | Base coat | Touch-up or local paint repair |
| White or grey line | Primer | Local repair or panel repaint |
| Silver or orange line | Metal, possible rust | Treat metal, prime and paint |
| Scuff on a bumper corner | Often deep in plastic | Bumper scuff repair and repaint |
| Scratch inside a dent | Paint and panel damage | Dent repair then paint |
Common causes of car scratches in the UAE
Tight parking and door dings
Doors and trolleys
Busy car parks lead to door edges and shopping trolleys hitting the sides.
Pillars and kerbs
Low pillars and tight ramps scrape bumpers and wheel arches.
Keyed paint
A key or sharp object often cuts through to primer or metal.
Sand, dust and washing
- Wiping a dusty car with a dry cloth drags sand across the paint
- Brush car washes can leave swirl marks over time
- Dirty wash mitts act like fine sandpaper
- Sandstorms leave a gritty layer that scratches when rubbed
Road debris and branches
Gravel and stones from trucks chip the bonnet and front bumper. Narrow villa roads and desert tracks bring scratches from bushes and branches.
Heat and sun
Strong sun does not cause scratches itself. It can dry out and dull old clear coat, which then marks more easily and can start to peel.
Peeling or flaking clear coat cannot be polished back. Polishing thins it further, so that panel needs refinishing.
What you can safely check yourself
- Wash the area with car shampoo and clean water
- Do the fingernail test and the wet test
- Look for white, grey or silver inside the scratch
- Check whether the panel is dented, pushed in or cracked
- Check for rust spots or bubbling paint near the scratch
- Note if the scratch crosses two panels, such as door and wing
- Do not sand, wet sand or use a cutting compound by machine
- Do not use toothpaste, kitchen cleaners or scouring pads
- Do not work on a hot panel in direct sun
- Do not pick at peeling clear coat
How to remove a light clear coat scratch yourself
These steps are only for clear coat marks where your nail does not catch. If it does not improve after two gentle rounds, stop.
-
Work in shade on a cool panel
Early morning or a covered car park works best in Dubai, as heat makes products dry too fast.
-
Wash and dry with microfibre
Any grit left on the paint will add new scratches.
-
Apply a small amount of scratch remover
Use a fine car scratch remover or polish on a soft foam or microfibre applicator.
-
Polish a small area with light pressure
Work in short straight overlapping strokes across the scratch, not hard circles.
-
Wipe off and inspect
Buff the residue with a clean microfibre and check from several angles.
-
Repeat once if needed
One more gentle round is fine. More than that removes too much clear coat.
-
Protect the area
Finish with a wax or sealant to protect the freshly polished clear coat.

Hand polishing has limits. A machine polish by a trained detailer removes more marks evenly, without burning through edges.
- Good for light lines, haze and paint transfer
- Results last longer when the area is protected afterwards
Our car polish guide for Dubai explains the difference between polishing and waxing.
What DIY cannot fix
- Scratches where your fingernail clearly catches
- Any scratch showing primer or metal
- Peeling, cracked or faded clear coat
- Scratches inside dents or creases
- Metallic, pearl or matte paints that need careful colour matching
Touch-up pens can hide a tiny stone chip from a distance. On longer scratches they often leave a raised, uneven line that costs more to correct later.
When to stop and bring the car to a workshop

- The scratch still shows after two gentle polish rounds
- Your nail catches or the colour inside is different
- Bare metal is showing, especially before humid months
- The scratch is on a bumper corner with a scuff or crack
- There is a dent under or beside the scratch
If the panel is dented but the paint is not broken, paintless dent repair may push it back without any repainting. If the paint is cut too, the dent is fixed first and then painted.
We often see cars where a DIY attempt with a coarse compound has dulled a whole area. That usually means polishing or painting a larger patch than the original scratch needed.
How Mechanics assesses a scratch
-
Clean the panel
We wash and dry the area so nothing hides the real depth.
-
Check under good light
Inspection lights show the edges and any swirl marks around them.
-
Judge the depth
We confirm which layer is cut and whether the panel is dented.
-
Check for past repairs
Old repaints, filler and film change how a panel can be repaired.
-
Choose the smallest repair that works
Polish, local paint repair, or panel repaint, matched to the damage.

Scratch repair options and what they fix
| Repair | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Small area polishing | Light clear coat marks and paint transfer | Cannot fix scratches through the colour |
| Full car polish | Swirl marks and dull paint all over | Removes some clear coat each time |
| Touch-up or SMART repair | Chips and small deep marks | A small touch-up may show close up |
| Bumper scuff repair | Scuffed and scratched bumper corners | Cracks or broken mounts cost extra |
| Panel repaint | Long or deep scratches on one panel | May need blending into the next panel |
| Dent repair then paint | Scratches inside dents | Quoted after assessment |
For damage across several panels, our body shop service covers dent, panel and paint work. For an older car with tired paint, read how to paint an old car over existing paint.
How much does car scratch repair cost in Dubai?
| Work | Indicative budget including 5 percent VAT |
|---|---|
| Small area scratch polishing | From AED 105 per small area |
| Touch-up or local SMART paint repair | Quote for the affected area |
| Bumper scuff repair and repaint | AED 370 to 840 per bumper |
| Single panel repaint | AED 420 to 945 per panel |
| Dent plus scratch or several panels | Quote after assessment |
These are planning budgets from our scratch repair price section. The final quote depends on the car, the paint and what we find.
Depth
A clear coat polish is a small job. Metal showing needs full preparation.
Area and panels
A scratch across two panels means two areas to prepare and paint.
Paint type
Metallic, pearl and matte finishes take more time to match.
Extra damage
Dents, rust, cracks and old repairs add work.
Trim and sensors
Removing mouldings, handles or parking sensors adds labour.
How Dubai conditions affect car paint
UV ages clear coat
Roofs, bonnets and boot lids fade and dull first on cars parked outside.
Grit on every surface
Dust left on the paint turns any wipe into fine scratches.
Hot panels
Polish and wax dry too quickly on a hot car and smear.
Moisture on bare metal
Humid nights and coastal air help rust start in deep scratches.
On cars we see from the coast, small chips on the bonnet edge are often the first place surface rust appears. Sealing them early keeps the repair small.
How to prevent car scratches

- Rinse dust off before you touch the paint
- Use two buckets and a clean wash mitt
- Dry with soft microfibre, never a dusty cloth
- Park at end spaces and away from trolley bays
- Keep distance from trucks carrying sand or gravel
- Wax or seal the paint regularly
Paint protection film
A clear film that takes chips and light scratches instead of the paint. See our PPF service.
Ceramic coating
Makes washing easier and adds gloss. It does not stop deep scratches.
Regular detailing
Safe washing and polishing keep swirl marks down. See our car detailing service.

Car scratch removal questions we get asked
Can I remove car scratches myself?
Yes, if the scratch is only in the clear coat. When your nail does not catch and the mark fades when wet, a fine scratch remover applied by hand usually improves it.
How do I know how deep a scratch is?
Run a nail across the scratch, and if it does not catch, it is likely in the clear coat. White, grey or silver inside the line means primer or metal is showing.
Does toothpaste remove car scratches?
It is not a good idea, as toothpaste is not made for car paint and its abrasive can dull the clear coat unevenly. A proper car scratch remover is gentler and more predictable.
Can polishing fix a deep scratch?
No, polishing only levels the clear coat around a light mark. If the scratch has cut through the colour, polishing cannot add paint back and can thin the clear coat around it.
Do scratch remover pens work?
They can hide a tiny chip from a distance. On longer or deeper scratches they often leave a raised or uneven line, and the colour may not match exactly.
Will a deep scratch cause rust?
Yes, if bare steel is showing, it can start to rust, especially with humidity and coastal air. Plastic bumpers do not rust, but deep marks still need paint to look right.
Can paint transfer be removed without painting?
Often yes. Paint from another car or a wall usually sits on top of the clear coat and comes off with gentle polishing, leaving your paint intact.
How much does scratch repair cost in Dubai?
Small area polishing starts from AED 105, a bumper scuff repair is AED 370 to 840 and a single panel repaint is AED 420 to 945, including VAT. The final quote depends on the car.
Does paint protection film stop scratches?
It protects against stone chips and light scratches by taking the damage instead of the paint. A sharp key or a hard impact can still cut through the film.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
It helps resist light marks and makes washing easier, which reduces swirl marks. It does not stop keys, stones or parking scrapes.
Can a scratched dent be fixed without repainting?
Only if the paint is not broken, as paintless dent repair works on dents with intact paint. If the paint is cut, the dent is repaired and then painted.
Will the new paint match my car?
We match the colour to your car and blend into nearby panels when needed. Metallic and pearl paints may need wider blending for an even look.
How do I get a scratch repair quote from Mechanics?
