In this guide
You can paint an old car over its existing paint if that paint is still firmly bonded, with no peeling, cracking or rust. The old surface must be cleaned, sanded, repaired and primed where needed before new colour and clear coat go on. If the paint is failing, it has to come off first, or the new paint will fail with it.
This guide is written by the Mechanics body shop team in Al Quoz, Dubai. It explains how painting over old paint works, when it is a good idea, what a DIY job can and cannot achieve, and what to ask a body shop.
If you already want a quote, see our car body shop service. For small marks, our scratch repair service may be enough.
Can you paint over existing car paint?

Yes, in many cases. Most professional resprays go over the old paint, not bare metal.
- Old paint is firmly stuck to the panel
- No peeling, flaking or deep cracks
- No rust bubbling under the surface
- No previous thick, poor quality repaint
The old paint becomes the base for the new layers. It only works if that base is stable. New paint cannot fix a weak surface underneath it.
In our body shop, most older cars we repaint keep their original paint as the base. Only the damaged, rusty or peeling areas are taken back further, which keeps the cost down without hurting the result.
Signs your car needs a repaint
The top panels take the most sun and fade first.
White, flaky patches mean the top layer has failed.
Old repairs that no longer match the rest of the car.
Small bubbles at edges, wheel arches or around trims.
Scratches through to the colour or metal on many panels.
You simply want a new look for the car.
Repaint or polish, which do you need?
Many cars that look tired only need a polish, not paint. This table helps you tell the difference.
| Condition | Polish | Repaint |
|---|---|---|
| Swirls and light haze | Yes | No |
| Light fading, clear coat intact | Often | Only if polishing fails |
| Peeling clear coat | No | Yes |
| Scratch through to colour | No | Yes, that panel |
| Rust bubbles | No | Yes, after rust repair |
If polishing can bring the paint back, it is far cheaper than a repaint. Read our car polish guide to see what polishing can fix.
When does old paint need to come off?
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Faded or dull but intact | Sun damage on the surface | Sand and paint over |
| Clear coat peeling | Top layer has failed | Sand back the failed areas fully |
| Paint flaking to metal | Lost adhesion | Strip that area to bare metal |
| Rust bubbles | Corrosion under the paint | Remove rust, treat and prime |
| Cracking like a dry riverbed | Too many old layers or poor repaint | Strip the affected panels |
| Wrinkling after a test spot | Paints not compatible | Use a sealer or strip |
Painting over rust does not stop it. Rust keeps spreading under new paint and soon bubbles through again.
Pros and cons of painting over old paint
Lower cost
Less labour than stripping the whole car to metal.
Faster
Fewer steps and shorter time off the road.
Extra protection
Sound old layers add to the protection of the metal.
Hidden problems
Weak spots underneath can show through later.
Paint build up
Too many layers can crack over time.
Colour matching
Faded old paint makes partial matching harder.

How car paint layers work

A modern car finish is built in layers. Each one has a job.
- Primer helps paint stick and fills tiny marks
- Sealer separates old and new paint if needed
- Base coat gives the colour
- Clear coat gives gloss and UV protection
When painting over old paint, the sanded old finish takes the place of the bare metal. Primer is used on any repaired or bare spots so the colour looks even across the panel.
How a car is painted over existing paint
-
Inspect the paint
Check every panel for peeling, rust, dents and old repairs. Decide what can stay and what must come off.
-
Wash and degrease
Remove dirt, wax, silicone and grease. Any residue stops new paint sticking.
-
Repair the body
Fix dents, treat rust and fill small damage before any paint goes on.
-
Sand the old paint
Scuff the whole surface so the new paint has something to grip.
-
Prime bare and repaired areas
Primer covers bare metal and filler, then is sanded smooth.
-
Mask and clean again
Glass, trims and rubber are covered. Dust is removed with a tack cloth.
-
Spray colour and clear
Several thin coats of base, then clear coat, in a clean, controlled space.
-
Cure, polish and check
Paint is cured, then small dust spots are polished out and the finish is inspected.

How rust is repaired before painting
Rust must be dealt with properly, or it will come back through the new paint.
-
Find all the rust
Check edges, seams, wheel arches and under trims, not just the visible spot.
-
Remove it
Grind or sand back to clean, bright metal around the rusty area.
-
Treat the metal
Apply a rust treatment or etch primer to protect the bare steel.
-
Repair holes
Small damage is filled. Rusted through metal may need new sections welded in.
-
Prime and seal
Primer and sealer go on before colour so moisture cannot get back in.
Which paint type is used?
| Paint system | What it is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single stage | Colour and gloss in one paint | Simpler, common on older cars and solid colours |
| Base coat and clear coat | Colour layer under a clear layer | Standard on most modern cars, more durable |
| Metallic and pearl | Base with metal or pearl flakes | Harder to match and blend |
| Waterborne base | Water based colour coat | Lower emissions, widely used in body shops |
| Matte finish | Special clear with no gloss | Needs special care and cannot be polished |
For a factory look, the colour is matched to the paint code on the car, then adjusted to the real colour of the panels, which may have faded.
How colour matching works

- Find the paint code, usually on a label in the door frame or under the bonnet
- Mix the colour and spray a test card
- Compare the card with the car in daylight
- Blend into nearby panels if needed so the change is invisible
Old paint fades in the sun. A panel painted with the original code can look different next to faded panels, which is why blending is often part of a good repair.
DIY spray painting or a body shop?
| Point | DIY with spray cans | Professional body shop |
|---|---|---|
| Small parts, mirrors, trims | Possible with care | Best finish |
| Full panel | Hard to get even | Even colour and gloss |
| Whole car | Not realistic | Suitable |
| Dust and heat control | Very difficult outdoors | Controlled spray area |
| Colour match | Limited | Mixed and tested |
| Durability | Often lower | Proper primer, base and clear |
DIY can work for small, hidden parts. For anything visible, the prep, spraying and curing need tools and a clean space most homes do not have.
Painting a car in Dubai, what is different?
Paint can dry too fast outdoors and leave a rough finish.
Fine sand lands in wet paint and shows as specks.
A good clear coat is vital to stop the new colour fading.
Humid days can affect how paint flows and cures.
Changing colour? If you change the car’s colour, the registration with the RTA needs to be updated. Check the current rules before you start.
Full respray or just some panels?
Single panel
For a scratched door or bumper. Often blended into the panels next to it.
Roof and bonnet
The most sun damaged areas on many Dubai cars.
Full exterior
For badly faded or mixed paint, or a colour change.

How much does it cost to repaint a car in Dubai?
Our body shop page shows published Dubai starting examples. Mechanics confirms its own quote for your car.
| Work | Starting example with VAT |
|---|---|
| Painting one panel | From AED 315 |
| Repair and paint one fender | From AED 525 |
| Full exterior respray | From AED 2,625 |
The final price depends on these points.
- How much rust, dent and stripping work is needed
- Colour type, metallic and pearl cost more
- Same colour or a full colour change
- How much needs to be removed and refitted
See the body repair price section for what the examples cover.

- Photos of each side in daylight
- Same colour or a new colour
How to care for new paint

- Hand wash gently for the first weeks
- Wait before waxing or coating, as advised by the body shop
- Park in shade where possible
- Remove bird droppings quickly
- Avoid brush car washes on fresh paint
- Do not use strong chemicals or pressure washers close up
Once the paint has fully cured, a sealant or ceramic coating helps protect it from Dubai sun. See our car polish guide for how protection works.
What makes a paint job last?
Good preparation
Clean, sanded and repaired surfaces hold paint for years.
Quality materials
Matched primer, base and clear from one paint system.
Proper curing
Paint needs time and the right conditions to harden fully.
Sun protection
Shade, sealant or ceramic slow fading in Dubai.
A cheap repaint usually saves money on preparation, and that is what fails first. Ask what is included before you compare prices.
Common repainting mistakes
- Painting over rust or peeling paint
- Skipping degreasing, so paint does not stick
- Not sanding the old surface
- Spraying thick coats that run or crack
- Painting outdoors in heat and dust
- Waxing before the paint has cured
If you paint a small part yourself
For a mirror cap, a trim piece or a hidden repair, careful DIY is possible. These steps give you the best chance.
-
Work in shade
Choose a cool, still, dust free place, early morning is best in Dubai.
-
Clean and sand
Degrease, then sand the area lightly so the paint can grip.
-
Mask well
Cover everything nearby. Spray travels further than you expect.
-
Use thin coats
Several light coats with drying time between, not one heavy coat.
-
Finish with clear
A clear coat gives gloss and protects the colour from the sun.
- Wear a proper mask. Paint fumes are harmful.
- Do not spray near the house or other cars.
How to choose a body shop for a repaint
- Ask what preparation is included in the price
- Ask how rust and dents will be handled
- Ask which panels will be blended
- Ask about the spray area and how dust is controlled
- Ask what is covered if the paint has a problem later
- Ask to see a written quote before work starts

Car painting myths and facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| All old paint must be stripped | Sound paint can be sanded and painted over. |
| New paint hides rust | Rust grows under it and comes back. |
| The paint code gives a perfect match | Faded panels often need tinting and blending. |
| More coats mean better paint | Thin, even coats last longer. |
| Fresh paint can be waxed at once | It needs to cure first. |
Car repainting questions we get asked
Do I need to remove all the old paint before repainting?
No, not if it is firmly bonded with no peeling or rust. It is sanded and used as the base. Damaged areas are taken back to sound paint or bare metal.
How long does a car repaint take?
A single panel can be quick. A full respray takes several days, depending on body repairs, the number of panels and curing time. We confirm timing with the quote.
Can you paint over clear coat?
Yes, if the clear coat is intact and sanded. If it is peeling, the failed clear coat must be removed first.
Will a repaint lower my car’s value?
A poor repaint can. A good one with matched colour and invoices can improve a faded car. Keep the paperwork for buyers.
Can I change my car’s colour in Dubai?
Yes, but the registration must be updated with the RTA. Check the current process before you start, as the colour on the card must match the car.
Is a wrap better than a repaint?
A wrap suits cars with sound paint and protects it underneath. A repaint suits faded or damaged paint. Each has its own costs and care.
Why does new paint sometimes peel?
Usually because of poor preparation, such as grease left on the surface, no sanding, or painting over weak old paint.
Can you repaint just one panel to match?
Yes. The colour is mixed to match and often blended into nearby panels so the repair is not visible.
Can I use spray cans for my whole car?
It is not realistic for a good finish. Spray cans suit small parts. A whole car needs proper equipment and a clean spray area.
Can you paint plastic bumpers over old paint?
Yes. Plastic parts are cleaned and sanded like metal, and bare plastic gets an adhesion promoter so the paint sticks and flexes with the bumper.
When can I wash my car after painting?
Follow the body shop’s advice. Gentle hand washing is usually fine soon after, but avoid brush washes and waxing until the paint has cured.
