Five reasons people book an inspection, five different checklists

A buyer, a driver facing the RTA test and a driver after a crash need different answers. Pick yours to see what we check and what you get.

Pre-purchase used car inspection

The full check before you transfer money. We look for the problems sellers do not mention: hidden accident repairs, gearbox faults that only show when hot, cleared fault codes, flood damage and worn suspension that will cost you in the first year.

  • VIN matched on the body, the Mulkiya and the service records.
  • Diagnostic scan of every module, including recently cleared and pending fault codes.
  • Lift inspection: leaks, rust, accident repairs, suspension, steering and exhaust.
  • Body and paint checked panel by panel for repaint, filler and panel gaps.
  • Cold start, engine and gearbox behaviour, AC performance and a road test.

What we check

Eight areas, checked the same way on every car

A pre-purchase inspection covers the systems that decide whether a used car is a good buy, and the problems that are expensive to put right.

Paperwork and VIN
What we check
VIN on the body, chassis and Mulkiya match, service records against the mileage, spec and import labels.
Why it matters
A mismatch can mean a rebuilt, re-shelled or misdescribed car.
Computer scan
What we check
Stored, pending and recently cleared fault codes in engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag and body modules.
Why it matters
Codes cleared before a viewing often come back within days.
Engine
What we check
Cold start, noises, smoke, oil condition, leaks, belts, cooling system and idle quality.
Why it matters
Engine faults are the most expensive surprise after purchase.
Gearbox and drivetrain
What we check
Shift quality hot and cold, slipping, fluid condition where accessible, 4x4 and differential operation.
Why it matters
Many gearbox faults only appear once the car is fully warm.
Brakes, tyres, suspension
What we check
Pad and disc wear, tyre age and tread, shocks, bushes, ball joints, steering play and alignment signs.
Why it matters
Worn parts here add up fast in the first year of ownership.
Body and paint
What we check
Panel by panel for repaint, filler, overspray, uneven gaps and replaced panels.
Why it matters
Hidden accident repairs affect safety, value and insurance.
Underbody and flood signs
What we check
Rust, chassis rail damage, leaks, silt or corrosion under trim and seats, connector corrosion.
Why it matters
Flood and structural damage are the problems to walk away from.
Electrics, AC, road test
What we check
Windows, locks, screens, cameras, lights, AC vent temperature, and a road test for noises and pulling.
Why it matters
In Dubai, a weak AC is a costly fix you will notice on day one.

Findings you can negotiate with

Every item is marked OK, attention or fail, with photos and a note of what a repair involves. Here is a sample for a used SUV a customer was about to buy.

Evidence, not opinionsFault codes, photos of leaks and repainted panels, tyre dates and measured wear. If we say it needs work, the report shows why.

Buying a used car in Dubai

Six red flags we find most often

Most used cars in Dubai are fine. These are the patterns that turn a good deal into a costly one, and what you can check yourself before booking an inspection.

Imported write-offs

Some American and Canadian imports were insurance write-offs or flood cars before they were shipped and repaired. Ask for the import history and check the VIN with an online history report before viewing.

Freshly cleared fault codes

A dashboard with no warning lights is not proof. If the battery was just disconnected or codes were cleared, readiness monitors show it on a scan. Ask when the car was last serviced and why.

Mileage that does not fit

A low-mileage car with a worn steering wheel, pedals and driver's seat, or service stamps that do not line up, deserves a closer look at stored mileage and records.

Flood damage

A musty smell, new carpets in an old car, fogged lights or random electrical faults. Water damage can stay hidden for months and keeps getting more expensive.

Gearbox only fine when cold

Insist on a drive long enough to warm the car up. Slipping, flaring or harsh shifts that appear hot are a common and expensive surprise.

Fines, Salik and finance

Traffic fines and Salik dues should be cleared and any bank finance settled before the transfer. A seller who resists this is a seller to be careful with.

How it works

From booking to verdict, in four steps

Most buyers book in the morning and have their answer the same afternoon.

01

Book on WhatsApp

Send the car's details or the ad link. We confirm the inspection scope, any charge and a time slot before the car arrives.

02

Car comes to Al Quoz

You or the seller bring the car, or our driver collects it with the seller's agreement. Arriving with a cold engine gives the most honest start.

03

Inspection and road test

Scan, lift inspection, body check, cold start and road test. You are welcome to stay and see what we find as we find it.

04

Report and verdict

Findings with photos on WhatsApp, marked OK, attention or fail, with our honest view: buy, negotiate or walk away.

FAQs

Car inspection in Dubai: your questions

Short answers from the technicians who do the inspections. Ask anything else on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
Is the car inspection free?

The initial inspection at Mechanics in Al Quoz is free: a technician looks over the car, listens to the complaint and tells you what needs checking. A full pre-purchase inspection with diagnostic scan, lift inspection and road test is a defined scope, and we confirm what it includes and any charge when you book, before the car arrives.

What does a pre-purchase car inspection check?

Paperwork and VIN, stored fault codes, engine and gearbox condition, leaks, cooling and AC, brakes, tyres, suspension and steering, underbody and rust, body panels for repaint, filler and accident repair, signs of flood damage, electrical systems and a road test. You get written findings marked OK, attention or fail.

How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?

Plan for around one to two hours for a full inspection including the road test, depending on the car. Findings are sent to you on WhatsApp the same day, so you can decide before the seller's deadline.

Should I buy a GCC spec or an imported car in Dubai?

GCC specification cars are built for the region, with cooling and AC specified for the heat, and their history in the UAE is easier to trace. American and other imports can be good value, but some arrive after insurance write-offs, flood damage or heavy repairs, so an import deserves a closer inspection and a history check before you pay.

Can you check if the mileage has been changed?

We compare the displayed mileage with service records, stored mileage in some control modules where the scan tool can read it, and the wear on the pedals, steering wheel, seats and tyres. No method is perfect, but mismatches are a strong warning sign and we point them out.

Will you inspect a car at the seller's location?

A full inspection needs a lift, scan tools and a road test, so it is done at our Al Quoz workshop. Ask the seller to bring the car, or our driver can collect it with the seller's agreement.

What does the RTA vehicle test check?

The registration renewal test at an RTA-approved testing centre checks roadworthiness items such as brakes, lights, tyres, suspension, steering, emissions, window tint and chassis condition. A pre-test check at Mechanics finds the common failure points first, so the car passes on the first visit.

How do I spot a flood-damaged car?

Look for a damp or musty smell, new carpets in an older car, silt or rust under the seats and in the spare wheel well, fogged lights, corroded connectors and random electrical faults. Flood damage can stay hidden for months, which is why we check under the trim and scan every control module.

Do I get a written report?

Yes. Findings are sent on WhatsApp with photos, each item marked OK, attention or fail, with a note of what any repair involves. Many buyers use it to negotiate the price or to ask the seller to fix items before the transfer.

Do you inspect electric and hybrid cars?

Yes, for the parts a general workshop can assess: body, tyres, brakes, suspension, underbody, cooling, warning lights and stored faults. Battery health reports depend on the make and the data the car exposes, so we tell you what we can read for your model when you book.
